The first part of June found residents and staff beginning their gardening. The variety of plantings included bell peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, wa- termelon and radishes, all varieties the residents like to eat. In addition, they planted flowers to decorate the Oxford patio. In preparation for the Montgomery County Fair, the residents are using their creative abilities to make craft and art projects. The weather has afforded us many opportunities to spend time outdoors. Once weekly the staff assists the residents around the block for “Walk Around”. Everyone enjoys looking at all the landscapes in the neighborhood and gives ev- eryone the opportunity to share what their yards were like at home rather their residence was in the city or in the country. “Showtime” is a new activity introduced to the Oxford community. Once a week the residents are given a ticket for admittance and are able to enjoy a movie and concessions. The concessions are available at a con- cession stand made by the residents themselves. Items available include fresh popcorn, red vine licorice along with other assorted candies. It’s a fun time to relax and watch a movie like we did at the old time movie theatre. The 4th of July is right around the corner! This will give us a chance to celebrate in style. Our celebration will be on July the 2nd at 8:00p.m. in the Laundry parking lot. Live entertainment will be provided by Glen Driskol with the remainder of the evening offering homemade ice cream and fireworks. There will also be a raffle to benefit the Eden Alternative that provides the care for our animals, greenhouse, plants and courtyard pond. Many great summer items have been donated for this raffle. Christmas in July is also planned for the month of July. The details are to be disclosed by the Activity Department later in the month! It is always enjoyable to have something to look forward to. Here’s to looking forward to the laughter, love and the coming events!!! LaVae Ferguson watering the garden on Chelsea. Mike and Mary Darbin enjoy family before their Grandaughter’s wedding.

The Road We Travel By: Monte Coffman, Executive Director

Monte Coffman Executive Director

I happened to be the manager here on campus during the last weekend in June. I like these assignments, which come around every 12 weeks. It certainly gives me a better opportunity to be with staff and Windsor community members for prolonged periods. I am able to observe actions and hear conversations and exchanges.....many of these while staff doesn’t even know I’m near. I was moved by what I saw and heard.

I saw gentle hands helping guide other hands at the dining room tables. I saw arms being placed around seniors to help them transfer...the same arms which then would provide comfort as they hugged and comforted those in their care. I saw feet moving quickly to serve. I saw faces smiling to convey joy and pleasure to those in need.

I heard voices, many voices, doing good things. Voices, helpful voices, offer guidance to those eyes which could not see. Voices, tender voices, offer kind words and condolences to those who had recently lost family and other dear friends. Voices, strong, calm voices projecting safety and security. I like what I heard all weekend.

It became clear to me, again, that ther are hundreds of hard working, caring people who want to do honorable work.....People who give of themselves for the benefit of others. I was humbled by what I experienced in that weekend. I was inspired by the weekend to press forward to lead this organization to even better service and care. Because we are human beings delivering human services, no doubt imperfections will and do occur from time to time. But I really liked what I saw.

Thank you for being a part of Windsor Place.

Good ‘Ole Fresh Produce

Every part of our lives is centered on food at Windsor Place. Dietary services feel we are no longer an Institutional food service organization. We let Windsor Place Community Members know they are at home, not just in a nursing facility.

We h a v e f r e s h h o t r o l l s a n d h o m e m a d e d e s s e r t s d a i l y . O u r m e n u s a r e r e s -ident driven. Monthly we have a resident food committee meeting discussing and changing menu choices.

We would like to give our Residents the opportunity to enjoy local homegrown fruits and vegetables...so we are reachingout to the community for your generous donations. We invite you to share with us any “extra” fruits and veg-

gies that you may grow in your garden. The elder’s lives will be enriched by enjoying those fresh garden de-lights! If you would like to add to the lives of elders at Windsor Place, please contact me, Lisa Barron, Dietary Manager, at (620)-252-4955 to coordinate further. Thank you for your consideration of the community program!

Each of our l ives have been touched in some way by cancer. Whether i t is a child, spouse, sister, brother, other loved one or co-worker, our lives have been devastated for a time by this terrible disease. This is the very reason why Windsor Place has a Relay for Life Team that is committed to raising money to help find a cure!

The Relay for Life Team worked extremely hard again this year and was able to give over $25,000 to the American Cancer Society thanks to each of YOU! Every contribution, no matter how small, is needed and appre-ciated in the fight against cancer. The Windsor Team appreciates every cent that is contributed so THANK YOU!

The Relay for Life event is an all night affair, made up of several component parts. For example, our tailgate par-ty consisted of grilled chicken and vegetable kabobs, grilled ears of corn and cold watermelon. The campsite was deco-rated to the theme of “How Sweet It Will Be To Be Cancer Free” and was decorated Willie Wonka style with LOTS of sweet things including a “pool of chocolate” and golden ticket memory markers made specifically for our survivors.

The Windsor Place Relay for Life Team won first for their campsite, theme, tailgate party and Team Spirit! Our very own Aaron Cardwell was named the Walker of the Year! Congratulations, Aaron!! The support shown by residents and staff for the Team Walk was amazing and energized every member of the Windsor team! Thank you to Aaron and Kenna for leading the cheer again!!

After much waiting and anticipation, Windsor Relay Team was awarded Team Spirit of The Year!! It is a recogni-tion very fitting of the past year, as we have really grown and learned a lot as a team….while still raising money. We will proudly hold the trophy for the next year and continue to raise as much money as we can for the American Cancer Society.

I tell you all of this, not because this is all we do, but because Windsor Place cares about the communities we serve. We love the residents, clients, families and staff and are willing to go the extra mile to make sure we are doing everything we can to improve al l l ives , whether we ever know how we touch them or not .

So the next time you hear about a fundraiser for Relay, please take part. It is for a worthy cause and togeth-er we WILL make a difference in the fight against cancer! Our community has proven to be very loving and giv-ing for these events and sponsor many of them. To each of our sponsors throughout the year, we say THANK YOU!

News From Assisted Living

By: Alice Long, Assisted Living Activity Director

June begins the busy months of summer. We enjoyed a family party with BBQ, baked beans, slaw and cobbler ala mode as John Oyler played beautiful guitar music in the background.

The Summer Humanities Program was really refreshing for the month of June. We had a varied assortment of entertain-ers and the talent was phenomenal. The residents were really impressed with the entertainers and the programs they presented, from yodeling to magic, it was all fantastic!

We enjoyed the movie “Blue Hawaii” at the Coffeyville Public Library. It’s a great way to spend the morning, with dough-nuts, coffee, good company and a great movie!

The summer Quest Program began this month. We love having children in the building, whether it’s to color pictures with them or play bingo, we love kids!

Barbara Mosher, a resident here at Assisted Living, enjoyed a visit from family this month. Her niece, Leslie, sang some favorite hymns for us using sign language during lunch. It touched our hearts and it was beautiful watching her hands, her facial expressions and listening to the beautiful music.

We took a van ride to Utopia Coffee Shop and Sonia treated us to cappuccinos and cinnamon rolls. We had a good visit with other customers and really enjoyed our drinks and rolls. We plan on visiting there quite frequently!

Our main focus this month has been getting ready for Relay for Life. Willy Wonka is our theme and we’ve been busy making “candy” decorations. Each of our resident survivors will receive a relay t-shirt. It is a heart touching event as you watch the survivors walk and the lighting of the luminary’s. It is a night of past memories and future hope for everyone involved. PLEASE SUPPORT RELAY FOR LIFE!

Sliced tomatoes, shot fireworks, fried chicken, made homemade ice cream and always traveled East of Edna to listen to live music.Watched fireworks, had lots of watermelon and had family cook-outs and homemade ice cream. Our family played live music, watched fireworks and had lots of food.Fried chicken and made home-made ice cream and made fresh apple pie from the apples off there trees.Eight families got together into one home and all brought differ-ent food and shot fireworks and had a great time.We lived in the country so we didn’t do many fireworks, but we still had family gatherings and fried chicken and had watermelon and homemade ice cream.

“Unbecoming” a Nursing Home!!..........www.windsorplace.net

“Recognizing that all life is precious, we will diligently serve the needs of each who enter here in a dignified manner.”

The month of June has been filled with diversified activities throughout Windsor Place. The first part of June found residents and staff beginning their gardening. The variety of plantings included bell peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, wa-termelon and radishes, all varieties the residents like to eat. In addition, they planted flowers to decorate the Oxford patio.

In preparation for the Montgomery County Fair, the residents are using their creative abilities to make craft and art projects. The weather has afforded us many opportunities to spend time outdoors. Once weekly the staff assists the residents

around the block for “Walk Around”. Everyone enjoys looking at all the landscapes in the neighborhood and gives ev-eryone the opportunity to share what their yards were like at home rather their residence was in the city or in the country.

“Showtime” is a new activity introduced to the Oxford community. Once a week the residents are given a ticket for admittance and are able to enjoy a movie and concessions. The concessions are available at a con-cession stand made by the residents themselves.
