2. As you can see, we chose the first snowy day of 2014 to complete our Windshield Survey. After a quick drive through town (roads were getting bad), we were able to quickly assess several different areas. Many pictures were taken, but, we have also added pictures from the internet to complete a pictorial of the area. A Slippery Drive down Main Street 3. Boundaries Winston Salem is about 20 minutes southeast via car. King is located off of Highway 52 in Stokes and Forsyth Counties. 4. Total land mass is . There are no large bodies of water in King, large enough for recreational use (other than fishing). Railways do run through the city. Map View of King 5. Housing We observed single family dwellings during our ride through town. Houses are generously spaced in most areas. There are several established neighborhoods of mostly single family, middle to upper class homes. The majority of homes observed were made of brick, with some made of siding or wood. 6. Open Space King has lots of open space. There are two parks in King that provide space for recreation and activity; Central Park has a childrens playground, pond, open air amphitheater and walking trails. Recreation Acres has ball fields, walking trails, tennis courts, and grill areas. Open space in King is plentiful. 7. We drove a complete circle around King 8. There werent many people congregating on this day in any particular area. Mostly, people seemed to be making last minute stops to the grocery store and the fast food restaurants in town. Commons Area 9. Transportation The main form of observed transportation was by car. Due to the weather conditions, there werent any people noted to be walking. What we could see of them, the streets appeared to be in good condition. No public transportation services are available in King. 10. Highway 52 is the major thoroughfare connecting King to the major cities of North Carolina. 11. Stokes Family YMCA King Senior Center Recreation Acres We passed by many different physician practices, dentist offices and schools. There was not any observed activity at any of these places, as they had already closed for the day due to the weather. 12. Stores There were a variety of stores and restaurants; some locally owned, some chain. There was a Food Lion grocery store and several different fast food restaurants that we passed in our drive through town. 13. Dairi-O According to the locals in King, this locally owned fast food restaurant is one of the most popular in the area 14. Even though we didnt really get to see what a normal day around King would be like, we did notice that this was a quaint little town with well kept homes, public parks, and businesses. There didnt appear to be any run down areas, graffiti, or trash strewn about the town. Signs of Decay? 15. Race Since there werent really any people out on this day, we didnt observe any residents out and about. According to this pie chart from city-data.com (2014), it is noted that the white race is the most prevalent of the area. 16. Ethnicity There are various churches of different denominations noted in King Surprisingly, there are various ethnic restaurants for such a small town; Indian Cuisine, Thai, and Mexican were observed. 17. Religion King has predominately protestant churches. Most notably Baptist. There is one Catholic church in the area. 18. Health and Morbidity 19. There were no observed signs of acute or chronic diseases in King. Physician practices and clinics in the area were plentiful. The closest full service hospital is Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem (20 minute drive). 20. We did not observe any political signs that would suggest any particular party affiliation. We did, however, observe the King police department, fire department, and medic stations. Politics 21.
