INTERNET EXPLORER 11Is this the time for me?
ON FEBRUARY 1ST 2013 WE SAID:
• WE GOT RUMOURS!• Windows 9 [Windows Blue?] to be released as
early as this summer• IF TRUE – could be a separate release or a
service pack upgrade to W8• Suggestions that this could mean anything
from no charge to a small charge to “regular” new version price
ON OCTOBER 17TH 2013• Windows 8.1 [and 8.1 RT] released• From the Microsoft web site:– Windows 8.1 is NOT designed for installation on
devices running Windows XP or Windows Vista.– If you’re running Windows 8, visit the Windows Store
for a FREE update to Windows 8.1. – If you’re running Windows 7, Purchase at $119; your
files will easily transfer. – If you’re running Windows Vista or earlier, qualify
for the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro by purchasing [$119] Windows 8 now.
BUT WE STILL GOT
RUMOURS!
THE WORD ON THE STREET
• Another release will be available in the “Spring” of 2014
• Yet another release is scheduled – possibly as early as late Autumn 2014 but more likely Spring 2015
SOME GENERAL NOTES• Explanation of 8.1 & 8.1 RT: – Windows 8.1 is the version for “conventional”
devices – i.e. Desktops & Laptops– Windows 8.1 RT is the version for “mobile”
devices – i.e Tablets and Smart Phones
• Windows 8.1 automatically installs Internet Explorer 11 – this appears mandatory
SOME GENERAL NOTES• Windows 8.1 includes
“Skydrive” storage• Full details of this still
being investigated• During install, you have
to have or create a Windows Live account. This may be part of how “your” Skydrive is identified
CONCLUSIONS• We still do not see any major benefit to the
average club member in Windows 8.1– If you are OK with what you have now – stick with
it– If you need or want to get a new machine [or just
feel adventurous] Windows 8.1 is not as big a learning curve as you might think
– You can make it similar – BUT NOT 100% IDENTICAL – to Windows 7
TODAY WE WILL LOOK AT:
• How to start at the Desktop as in Windows 7• What is where in 8.1• The two versions of Internet Explorer 11• The built-in E-mail application• Name changes – “Windows Defender”, “File
Explorer” & “This PC”• Building the Desktop• LEARNING 8.1 – IT’S NOT SO HARD AS WE
THOUGHT
