Winding down, how are ya……
It’s that time of year when our parish primary schools are preparing to shut up shop for a well-
deserved Summer break. Any casual visitor to the schools during these
days expecting to see a winding down in operation will be greatly surprised and disappointed. These weeks tend to be something of the
‘storm before the calm’ – to juxtapose the old adage. All kinds of things
have to be attended to and the planning process for the next school year is already well in hand.
We will say goodbye to the children who have quite literally grown up in
the school for the past eight years and prepare to welcome the new intake of Junior Infants through the doors in September. Like the seasons, the school has a life cycle of its own, one which repeats
itself each year from new beginnings to graduation. It’s a process that involves many people
working in tandem to ensure that all runs smoothly and efficiently. School Principals and teachers are the key players of course delivering the all-important front-line educational expertise, but a
school community is a co-operative effort of many different players. The Board of Management
have the responsibility of ensuring that the Schools operate to the highest standards in every
respect, and in that regard, we owe a debt of gratitude to Board members who give of their time and energies in a completely voluntary capacity. The present Boards will end in October and new
members must be found to constitute their replacements. A sincere thanks to all who have served
for the past four years.
A relatively recent addition to school life is the role of Special Needs Assistants, these are
employed by the school as supports to children with particular needs and they are invaluable in the
classrooms.
The role of School secretary is a key role in any school and our parish schools are well served by
the highly efficient incumbents. The parent’s associations form a vital link with the parent body
and have proven a great and vital part of the school community. We are blessed in Lucan by fine
schools. We wish all involved a pleasant summer break and look forward to welcoming them back with batteries recharged in September.
Scoil Mhuire Girls 6th Classes will have their graduation Mass on Monday 24th June at 7.30pm.
St. Mary’s Boys 6th classes will have their graduation Mass on Tuesday June 25th at 7.30pm in St. Mary’s Church. This will be followed by the presentations of tokens and certificates in the church,
and then off to the parish centre for more informal moments.

Know Your Rights: Electric Scooters Question:
Travelling to my office through city traffic is
taking me longer because of increased congestion.
Can I travel by electric scooter instead?
Answer:
An electric scooter (sometimes called an e-
scooter) is a small platform with two or more
wheels that is propelled by an electric motor. The
rider can also propel the electric scooter forward
by pushing off the ground.
Electric scooters and electric skateboards fall into
the category of ‘mechanically propelled vehicles’
(as defined in the Road Traffic Act 1961). If a
vehicle can be powered by mechanical or electrical power alone, then it is considered to be
a ‘mechanically propelled vehicle’.
Under Irish road traffic law, people using such
vehicles in a public place must have insurance,
road tax and a driving licence. There are penalties
under road traffic laws (including fixed charge
notices, penalty points, fines and possible seizure
of the vehicle) for not being in compliance with
these requirements. As it is currently not possible
to tax or insure electric scooters or skateboards,
they are not considered suitable for use in public
places. However, the Road Safety Authority is
carrying out research as to how electric scooters and other such vehicles are regulated in other
countries, particularly in other EU member states.
The goal is to understand the road safety
implications of the use of such vehicles on public
roads, especially when interacting with other
vehicles. You can read frequently asked questions about electric vehicles on rsa.ie.

Happy 40th Birthday Davey
Feel no guilt in laughter
He’d know how much we care
Feel no sorrow in a smile
That he is not here to share
We cannot grieve forever
He would not want us to
He’d hope that we would carry on
The way we used to do
So talk about the good times
And the way we showed we care
The days we spent together All the happiness we shared
Let memories surround us
A word someone may share
Will suddenly recapture A time, an hour, a day
That bring him back to us as clearly
As if he were still here today
And fills us with the feeling
That he is always near
For if we keep those moments
We will never be apart
And Davey will live forever
Locked safely in our hearts
Love forever Mam and Dad

Working with our new Local Councillors in
SDCC: We want to work strategically with all local councillors to promote and protect Lucan’s
heritage. We are in the process of organising a
free, short historical walking tour of Lucan, just
for our Local Councillors, to raise awareness. If
YOU are a new local councillor, and you’re
interested in attending this free, informal
networking event, on 19th July at 7.30pm, please
email [email protected].
Have you old Lucan artefacts, records or
photos? Scan-and-return project: Some members have contacted us with concerns about
preserving unique historical material for posterity.
Naturally people want to hold on to items like
this, so we have contacted an expert in local
history who is happy to scan items carefully and
return them immediately to the owner. It means
that you are safeguarding the unique historical
information for future generations. If you’d be
interested in this, contact us at
Local Business? Get a free delivery of SOL
leaflets on Lucan’s history: Thanks to our
GoFundMe fundraiser and SDCC’s Community
Grant Scheme, we were able to reprint our
popular “Lucan’s Local History” leaflet. If YOU
are a local business or centre and would like to
display some copies for your customers/visitors,
let us know at [email protected] and we will
deliver a small bundle to you, free.
Calendar 2020: online SOL fundraiser with 1
calendar per €10 donation! Paul Butler, SOL Committee, has compiled a beautiful collection of
his photos of Lucan’s heritage and has created a
high-quality, A4 calendar for 2020. We will be
opening a GoFundMe online fundraising link
shortly to enable us to raise much-needed funds
for operation of SOL and events. Every €10
donation to the fund will receive a free calendar
during August/September. We also hope to have
copies available for inspection and purchase at
our Heritage Week events in August, as well as a
link to preview the calendar before a donation is
made. Further information coming very soon. Local businesses or community centres may also
wish to stock a few copies for customers as we’ve
had very positive feedback on the inspection
copies. Enquiries to [email protected]

Esker Plane Crash By Enda Lee
In the first week of October 1956, Irish national
newspapers reported the tragic crash in Esker,
Lucan, of a De Haviland Tiger Moth plane, in
which two men were killed. The men were Mr
David Montgomery, and Mr William Kenny.
The crash had happened at about 5.40 in the
afternoon of Sunday 30th September, and eye-
witnesses described how the plane had caught fire
and lost its upper wings with a loud bang, and
crashed into a field near Esker cemetery (the new cemetery had opened in 1939). The wings were
located 500 yards away from the crash site.
A football team made up of members of the
Dublin Firemen’s football club was playing a
team from Lucan Rovers in a nearby field, and
they rushed to help, using shovels to throw clay
onto the fire, but to no avail. One fireman
received burns to his hand and back, trying to
help. The fire was seen from another plane by
passengers on a sight-seeing trip, also from
Weston Aerodrome. They returned to base and
the pilot, Captain Darby Kennedy then
approached the site in his Tiger Moth and landed nearby, but was unable to help, or to identify who
had been killed. So the relatives waiting anxiously
at Weston had to await the return of all other
planes, before they knew for certain which one
had been lost.
David Montgomery was 36 years old, married to
Lillie, and with two young children, Robert and
Ruth, and was from Baldoyle. After his funeral on
Thursday the 4th October, there was a fly-over of
the cortege by three Tiger Moth planes in
formation, because of his membership of the Aero
Club of Ireland, of which he was secretary. He is
buried in St Fintan’s cemetery, Sutton. He was very experienced flyer, having served in the RAF
during WW2. The son Robert, or Bob, is a well-
known motoring correspondent.
William Kenny was 23, and single, and was
buried in Glasnevin, after the Requiem Mass in St
Agnes’s church, in Crumlin. His mourners were
his parents, Mr and Mrs William Kenny and two
brothers and three sisters, and extended family,
and representatives from the Air Corps. He was
an experienced pilot, was also a member of the
Aero Club, and was qualified to fly solo.
Investigators were unable to establish for certain
which of the two was flying at the time of the
crash.
Behind the Crab Apple Trees (A short true story by Paddy McElroy)
It was a summer evening somewhere in the 1950s
as my two brothers and I emerged from the Sunday Matinee at the picture house in Lucan.
Our young brainwashed minds could still go on
fighting off hordes of wild redskins along with
Randolph Scott, but we opted instead to cross the
road to Felice's East End Café to purchase ice
cream cornets. When these were drizzled with
raspberry syrup and paid for, we headed in the
direction of Chapel Hill, licking as we went. This
would help sustain us for the climb ahead.
Making our way up the hill, we passed the steps
up to the church field on our right and the Rev.
MacCarten memorial above the raised ledge on
our left. On reaching the main road with Quigleys long house opposite, we walked along the
footpath, passing the St. Edmundsbury back gate
and Mrs. Oldham’s little house.
While walking this stretch we were being
entertained by a tiger moth plane above, which
was performing dives, then climbing again and
doing “loop the loops”. We were watching this
over the roofs of the cottages, one of which was
Jack Collins' house. The plane went into another
descent, disappearing behind the roofs, but did
not come up again. As we wondered about this a
cloud of black smoke rose into the air, but as
youngsters we were not sure if the events were
connected.
Walking on we passed Brian Conway’s house and
motor repair garage and Peggy Culhanes. At the gatehouse of St. Edmundsbury, where the Brazil
family lived, we crossed the road and entered
Esker Lane. Along the lane we passed Aggie
Sheridans, John Greenes, and Dick Shackelton’s
bungalow.
Arriving at Willsbrook we went in through the
iron gates, turning left past the big beech tree
towards the lodge. My mother, who was a bit
shaken told us about a plane passing low
overhead, with, in her words, "bits falling out of
it", into the trees in the wood along Captain
Wardell’s avenue.
The tiger moth plane had indeed crash landed and
burst into flames, claiming the lives of both
occupants, in Joe Leonard’s big field, “Behind the Crab Apple Trees”.
Note: Paddy McElroy’s father was the Gardener
at Willsbrook House, and the family lived in the
gate lodge.
Happy Fathers’ Day to all
the Dads of Lucan! Hope you all have a lovely day.
More Lucan people on telly!
6 weeks ago, the girls from
Scoil Mhuire GNS, won a
Vegepod. On Monday last, a
team from Virgin Media’s Ireland AM visited the
school to see how things were progressing, and
they weren’t disappointed… Well done!
Cumann na mBunscoil saw a lot of Lucan teams
competing in the hurling and camogie this year. While all did brilliantly to get to these finals, two
were lucky enough to take home some silverware!
Congratulations to Scoil Mhuire, Woodview
(above), and to Scoil Mhuire GNS (below).
Happy Days!
It’s brilliant that these young people get a chance
to play in Croker, creating great memories for
them as well as those who cheered them on.
Up the Dubs! Didn’t the Dubs Footballers do
well against Kildare on Sunday last. Watch out for our Hurlers this weekend as they
take on Galway – keep an eye out for some Lucan
input in this one!
New arrivals on the Village Green!
Peter, the sculptor putting the final touches to his
creation in the park last week.
The tree stump with images on both sides, will be admired by many, and should provide great
conversations among curious toddlers.
Well done to SDCC Parks Dept. Should be worth
a couple of points in our Tidy Towns efforts.
SDCC celebrates 25 Years! Did you get your
copy of SDCC’s Newsletter in the door this
week? In it, we spotted a photo carried by The Echo back
in January 1994 – a picture of those attending the
inaugural meeting of the Council.
Guss O’Connell is in there, and still going strong
after the recent elections. Also, there is Peter
Brady who is still very involved in the local
community. The other Lucan Councillor in the
photo is Finbarr Hanrahan.
TRANSPORT USERS Hundreds of thousands of commuters were
severely disrupted on Tuesday morning 11th of
June 2019 because O Connell St was blocked off
due to a fatal stabbing incidence on a very wide
footpath shortly after midnight. Bus routes using
O Connell St were diverted up Gardiner St. The
Green Luas line terminated at Stephens Green
and Lucan road bus routes were also severely
disrupted due to the extra traffic on the Quays. Why should the whole city be brought to a stand-
still and cause such inconvenience to so many due
to the miss behaviour of one individual? This
shutting down of main archways is happening too
often, steps should be taken to stop this happening
again. What does it ever achieve by shutting the
main archway down?

Cllr. Guss O’Connell PC Independent Representative, Palmerstown
Fonthill. 0876838254.
Congratulations to Cllr Vicki Casserly on being
elected Mayor at the inaugural meeting of the
Council. Vicki is a most worthy holder of the
Office. I know she will have a memorable and
successful year. I invited all 39 other Councillors
to join me in a Civic Charter where we would all
agree and pledge to work a common 5 years programme. The programme writes itself: Crises
in Housing, Climate, Environment,
Transport/Traffic, Sustainable Planning, Social
Inclusion and Facilities. Looking at election
literature all candidates wanted mostly the above!
Given the limited powers of Councillors: question
how to achieve what’s best for the Community:
Answer. Act like a Board of Directors. Instead,
we have the usual “Ruling Group” and “Others”,
contrived opportunistic debate. Not what Local
Government should be. Been there, not productive. What’s agreed for now, I’ll work.
Better Democracy? Let’s discuss.
Mayor, Cllr. Vicki Casserly PC - Fine Gael. Local Councillor, Peace Commissioner. Tel: 0858317982. Email: [email protected]
I am honoured and humbled to have been elected
last Friday as Mayor of South Dublin County
Council. I am passionate about making this area
more inclusive, more accessible, more sustainable
and all in all, a better place to live for local
people. I look forward to using the platform of
Mayor to continue this work with energy and
dedication. I believe I can make a real difference
as Mayor, because I know this community inside
out. This County has so many strengths, and so
many wonderful communities, but we must not lose sight of the fact that many areas of
community life require more investment and
support. During my coming year as Mayor, my
vision is to make real progress on the journey to
making our county fully accessible and inclusive
for all residents. I look forward to continuing to
work closely with residents and SDCC for the
betterment of our community. Go raibh mile
maith agaibh.

Lucan Community College: No progress has
been made on the upgrade and extension works at
Lucan Community College and it is very
disappointing. The school has been stuck at Stage 2B of the detailed Architectural Design stage for
far too long. This week I have called on the
Minister for Education to bring forward an
emergency plan to ensure construction of all
schools stuck at Stage 2B are prioritised and get
underway without any further delay.
Spinraza: This week we got great news that the
HSE approved the drug Spinraza for children
suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. I
worked hard on this campaign and continued to
raise it in the Dáil as Ireland was the only country in Europe not to provide the drug to children with
SMA. Massive congratulations to the local
families who campaigned rigorously.
Paul Gogarty-Independent Tel: 087-2752489. Email: [email protected]
Mayor Casserly: Congratulations to Cllr Vicki
Casserly who has been elected Mayor of South
Dublin for the coming year. I was happy to vote
for Vicki on a personal level and I wish her and
her family all the best during her term. I know
from my own time as Mayor that it is a hugely busy but very fulfilling role and I hope she enjoys
the experience.
SNA cuts in Lucan: Having carried out an
analysis and having got feedback from a good
number of school principals, its clear Lucan will
lose up to 12 SNAs in real terms if the current
allocations go ahead. I know that that there is an
appeals process to come. For my part I have
highlighted the overall loss and individual
situations to the NCSE and the Minister and urge
other elected reps to follow suit.

Spinraza Victory! There was some great news
this week in relation to access to the drug
Spinraza. Those that live with Spinal Muscular
Atrophy which is an extremely rare condition are overjoyed by the news from the HSE that their
campaign for access to the drug will now be
reimbursed. It’s a scandal that families had to go
public in the first place when this drug is readily
available in most European countries.
Local Elections: I would like to thank the many
people I met over the course of the local elections.
Kelie Sweeney done really well for a first time
candidate and we are extremely proud of her
efforts over the past seven weeks. A number of
issues were raised over the election so we hope as a party to campaign and hold public meetings in
the coming months on these issues.
