Basic Rules of the Road Both vessels under PowerHead on
Both vessels alter course to starboardand pass port-to-port.
Crossing
Vessel with the other on her starboardside gives way by altering course tostarboard.
Overtaking
Overtaking vessel must keep clear.
Both vessels under SailHead on
Both vessels alter course to starboardand pass port-to-port.
Vessels on different tack
Vessel on port tack gives way byaltering course to starboard.
Vessels on same tack
Vessel to windward of the othergives way.
Blue vessel = giveway vessel, yellow vessel = stand-on vessel – the stand-on vessel maintainscourse and speed. Both vessels have a responsibility to avoid collisions – if the giveway vesseldoes not take action it is the stand-on vessel’s responsibility to take action.Sail vessels under power (or power and sail) must display a cone and act as a power vessel.Who gives way to who?Give way to any vessel higher up this list than you:
