    The airplane ranks as one o historys most inge-nious and phenomenal inventions. It has surely beenone o the most world changing. How ideas aboutaerodynamics rst came together and how the scienceand technology evolved to orge the airplane into the

    revolutionary machine that it became is the epic storytold in this six-volume series, The Wind and Beyond: ADocumentary Journey through the History o Aerodynamics inAmerica.

    Following up on Volume Is account o the inventiono the airplane and the creation o the original aero-nautical research establishment in the United States,Volume II explores the airplane design revolution othe 1920s and 1930s and the quest or improved air-oils. Subsequent volumes cover the aerodynamics oairships, fying boats, rotary-wing aircrat, breaking thesound barrier, and more.

    In 2005, the Society or the History o Technologyawarded its rst annual Eugene S. Ferguson Prize oroutstanding and original reerence works to The Windand Beyond. The citation read in part:

    The Wind and Beyond is remarkable in its breadth ovision. Its purview includes not just aerodynamical the-ories and research results, but also innovative airshipsand airship components as well as the institutions inwhich and through which aerodynamics developedEach [chapter] essay is original in two ways. First, each isa rst-rate piece o scholarship in its own right. Second,the very decision to include these narratives is signi-cant: they comprise roughly 10 percent o the contents

    o the volume, but they make the other 90 percent bothaccessible and meaningul to the nonspecialist reader,simultaneously enhancing the value o and enlargingthe potential audience or the whole volume.TheWind and Beyond will be a boon both to students and toestablished scholars in several ways.
