What’s an “Oakland” ...and why GMC Trucks? In the early days of General Motors, the OaklandMotor Car Company was based in Pontiac,Michigan (located in Oakland County), In 1926,GM asked Oakland to introduce a lower-priced“companion” car — the Pontiac — whichquickly became so succesful that the Oaklandnameplate was discontinued following 1931.
GMC Truck & Coach Division was also based inPontiac, MI. In various years (especially in thelate 1950s) GMC pickups were built with enginessourced from the Pontiac Division. Thus, POCIrecognizes the importance and legacy of allthree of these nameplates... past and present!
Nowadays, Oaklands are so rare that they areunlikely to be seen locally. Meanwhile, Pontiacand GMC Truck enthusiasm remains strong!
From Broadway, please turn NORTH on Mountainview Avenue(the first street east of Swan) and loop around behind the tall,five-story “4801” building. Volunteers will be stationed there todirect all display vehicles and spectator traffic. PLEASE DO NOTENTER THROUGH THE VISCOUNT HOTEL’s MAIN ENTRANCEalong Broadway Boulevard, as this will only create unnecessarytraffic congestion in the parking areas reserved for hotel guests.
ALL PONTIAC & GMC TRUCK DAY is a FREE, fun, and NON-JUDGEDvehicle display and gathering of enthusiasts, together with amembership drive. NO classes, NO judging and NO attitudes!
The event is open to all enthusiasts of Pontiacs, Oaklands, and GMCTrucks only. The Arizona Chapter of the Pontiac-Oakland Club,International (POCI), is actively seeking new members, so we urgeyou to please consider joining! All non-member (or prospectivemember) vehicles will be parked alongside member-ownedvehicles for this four-hour event located in central Tucson.
There are NO trophies presented at this event, but there will beTHREE VEHICLES which will receive some special recognition:• The Golden Jackstand recognizes one vehicle (any year) in attendance with
“promise and potential.” Push, pull or drag it there... We really wanna see it!• The Bill Armstrong Memorial recognizes one modified or customized vehicle
(any year) which is built to suit its owner’s personal taste and unique vision.• The Ross Whitehead Memorial recognizes one significant pre-1964 vehicle
which epitomizes enthusiasm for the Pontiac-Oakland-GMC Truck hobby.
