BARTHS
There's a certain integrity that exists on St. Barthélemy. Perhaps it's the
relaxed simplicity. A certain purity. A quality one has difficulty putting one’s
finger on.
Not much has really changed about St. Barthélemy over the past thirty years.
This slice of heaven, nestled between several equally unique islands of the An-
tilles, is as tranquil and simple on so many levels as it was 30 years ago. One
just has to pause and find the beauty in the simple things that never change:
the smell of pepper and lemon in the grasses near the volcanic stone walls of
Grand Fond, the joyous bells from the churches of Lorient and Gustavia, the
diving pelicans, the brief moments of descending light as the sun sets.
I first had the privilege of visiting my mother during her annual sojourn to the
island in 1983. Sure, the island has evolved. Change is inevitable. There are
certainly more villas and hotels and glamorous spots to people watch and to
be seen, yet the integrity and purity that remains is a testimony to the relaxed
approach to life that even the most sophisticated and well traveled recognize
and cherish. St. Barths has matured well.
There's a thoughtfulness and caring in the efforts of the people who live and
choose to make their home here. One gets the feeling these folks do their ut-
most to put their best feet forward. Good enough just isn't good enough.
It's a small island. There is no room for messes. No room for sloppiness. Of course, there are a few
bits here and there, but it is not the norm. This is not to say that all is perfect, and in many ways just
the opposite, in the sense that nature has its own perfection free from the touch of man; yet there are
these delightful human touches one sees everywhere if one just keeps his eyes open.
As lovers of this small island, we have a sacred duty to keep it clean, well maintained, aware of the
environmental issues that face the delicate ecosystems, and care for it as best we can so that what
is handed down to the next generation is as much a treasure for them as it is for us.
The environment is of great importance and everyone knows it. And everyone cares about it.
Some may need an occasional reminding, and St. Barth Essentiel is there ready to remind us all.
This wonderful association is run by the indefatigable hélène Bernier, with a host of volunteers.
They organize community beach clearings, lectures, informational seminars and more. Their work
is a living example of the island’s awareness and commitment to maintaining a pristine and
pure environment.
One can find out a lot more about their work by visiting http://stbarthessentiel.fr/en/association.
Donations are, of course, welcome. The association’s goals are “the defense, transmission,
and development of the heritage, historic, cultural, and environmental aspects of the island of
Saint Barthélemy via various activities, organization of events, information training workshops.
To Defend and Protect - Old stone walls - Traditional cottages - Native species of flora and fauna -
Neighborhood chapels - Historic monuments - Local traditions - Salt ponds – Beaches” and more.
It’s not complicated – it’s about keeping it beautiful.
This preservation work is the job before all of us who know and care about this beautiful island. As
you reflect on the time you spend on this lovely charming island, so full of hospitality and love,
consider what it gives you, and please do all you can to give back all you can, as many of you
already do. Future families will thank you.
Enjoy...

ow do you say thanks to 30 years of warm baguettes barely out of the oven saturated with the
unmistakable aroma of freshly-brewed café filtre? How do you say thanks to the curls of breeze that rustle
linen in the windows and waken you to another day of abandonment and peace in a hillside retreat above
St. Jean? How do you say thanks to the familiar drone of an airplane in the distance on its languid
approach to the island? How do you say thanks to the bands of schoolchildren traipsing à l’école every
morning, giving home-grown authenticity and fixture to the community of Lorient? How do you say thanks
to reaching the summit of Lurin, reeling around a corner and seeing Gouverneur Beach to the south pop
out of nowhere at the bottom of an impossible switchback? How do you say thanks to getting there and
diving in as the afternoon wanes?

s one looks back on 30 years of involvement with St. Barth, with its inhabitants and its property owners, the
urge to say thanks in some form for the opportunity to be a part of the island is real. It is nearly impossible not to feel at
home here, as if it were ours, although we know that we, merely, are partakers of a much greater enterprise with a dy-
namic that is private, indigenous and international—all at the same time.
Three decades of knowing this special island and interacting with its people, with the French vernacular that makes it so
unique in the pervasive ether of the Caribbean, bring us to the point of trying to define our own presence here, to look
back and offer a measure of appreciation for being allowed to carve a niche that has become established and embraced.
We can respect the island on the one hand, recognized and indulged as we are by bartenders and bricklayers alike,

Wby sailors and charter captains, by
beach dwellers and restaurant owners,
and we can satisfy the many clients
who come to visit from all over the
world on the other. It all looks quite
simple, when you flip through the color-
ful pages of a publication such as this,
struck by the imagery of a location
steeped in natural beauty and a deep-
seated casual culture that puts the
most agitated at ease. How could
one's business not succeed in such a
venue? There is more to it, however.
e are wed to St.
Barths in a manner far deeper and
more visceral than our business interest
would suggest. We came here originally
to visit family and seek solace on an
island virtually undiscovered at the time
but for die-hard Caribbean disciples
who knew it for its deep harbor, craggy
cliffs, beaches unparalleled in beauty,
variety and number, endearing French
patois, and quirky airstrip. We fell in
love with the island, as so many do,
and we recognized that there was
something about it that set it apart from
your rank-and-file West Indies destina-
tion. The Rockefeller, Goelet, and
Biddle families owned tracts of land,
which gave it a measure of amplitude
that distinguished it—if only in a
symbolic sense—from other, less
celebrated Caribbean roadsteads. The
implacably rugged, mountainous terrain
filtered out those whose vision,
imagination and pride of place were not
up to appreciating the singularity of this
uncut gem, while at the same time it
gave those who embraced it endless
occasion for attaching houses to its
rocky bluffs with unobstructed
panoramic views of the coastline, the
ocean, and the horizon in the distance.
an undefinable charisma that projects
from the island’s inner heart
SAINT BARTH ESSENTIEL IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP founded on Facebook by local resident and naturalist Hélène Bernier in
2009 with a goal of protecting the heritage and natural beauty of St. Barths. The association was hardly off the ground when it had to
focus on getting registered voters to sign a petition to protect the “green zones” in St. Barths against the construction of new hotels.
Saint Barth Essentiel became the procedural watchdog of environmental protection and lobbying against large developers. The goals of
the association comprise the defense, transmission, and development of the historic, cultural, and environmental aspects of St Barths,
as well as its heritage. Currently Saint Barth Essentiel and its founder Bernier are very active in the organization of events, including
training and informational workshops, and programs featuring scientists who are well respected in their various fields.
WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF ST. BARTHS, Hélène Bernier is optimistic: “I envision an island that remains beautiful, and
maintains its reputation as the island where we feel totally safe. We have to protect the beauty of the island, the flora, the fauna, the
beaches, and the quality of the air. Today new people are arriving who are very powerful and want to buy land and build on the island.
To be able to adapt to all the changes to the island without losing our own identity, that would be fantastic!”
As WIMCO remembers the beauty of St. Barths over the past 30 years and looks to the future 30 years, we applaud the mission of
Saint Barth Essentiel and invite our guests to contribute: www.stbarthessentiel.fr/en/association.
SAINT BARTH ESSENTIEL
WIMCO | 1-877-264-8455 21
So we bought in, perhaps more to
assure its place in our future and the
futures of our friends than to generate a
market. Along the way, we found out
that we could give back to St. Barths in
the process of establishing ourselves
here. Creating an infrastructure to
address the stewardship needs of a
growing number of international
property owners whose presence in a
given year was measured in weeks,
while making the island available to
scores of visitors in search of discern-
ing and cultivated vacation time in
private accommodations unique to the
Caribbean, became a self-fulfilling
prophecy. From a handful of villas in the
beginning to the catalogue we
represent today, we grew, and along-
side flourished restaurants and night
spots, hotels and chic retail, water-
sports, charter outfits, and an all-
embracing charisma that projects from
the island’s very heart.
And to all who have and who will
partake in this bounteous feast we
thank you. Thank you — to the
property owners who work so
graciously with us to make their villas
available in their absence, and to our
loyal clients, who put their trust and
their vacations in our hands year in and
year out. Thank you — to the people
who actually live on St. Barths, the
trades that maintain the island and
carve its roads out of hillsides and build
houses with the skill and intensity of
fine cabinetmakers. Thank you — to
the restaurateurs and the many others
in the hospitality business who make
coming to St. Barths such a delectable
and rewarding experience. And finally
thank you — to France, no less, for
allowing the overseas collectivity of
Saint Barthélemy to retain its essential
character through the years, ensuring
that, at the core, it always will be
alluringly French.
And as we reach for an ever
better future, remember

T here’s no one St. Barths beach. Rather, there are too many choices and so much variety
that you can have a different beach experience–all on the same small island– every single day of
your vacation. Some beaches hide in chiseled coves behind hilly terrain; others are right in the
hustle and bustle of St. Jean, the very first sight you savor as your arriving plane slows to taxi
speed at the small airstrip. There are many beaches to choose from. The number ranges from a
dozen to more than 20 depending on who’s doing the counting. Most are accessible by car;
some require a bit of a hike and a drive; others are best approached by boat.
32 WIMCO | 1-877-264-8455
If you seek privacy, there is a plage for you. If you seek water sports, there is an anse for that. You can try one beach in the
morning, return to the villa for a bite and a nap, and move on to another totally different beach experience in the afternoon, and yet
another for sunset. You go where you want and see what the waves bring in!
Many people like to go to St. Jean because it is, to beaches of St. Barths, the iconic emblem of this French paradise. Along with
beautiful people, the glamour is enhanced by beachside dining, flurries of activity, and often strains of music emanating from the
various seaside eateries. There are small airplanes landing and taking off in your midst, sailboats coming and going, windsurfers
and Hobie Cats, and always there is majestic Eden Rock watching over both sides of the crescent.
Gouverneur and Saline are secluded Caribbean beaches in the classic sense—ringed by steep craggy hills, crescent stretches of
clean, fine sand guarded by dunes and sea grapes, waves lapping and sometimes crashing, swimmers frolicking, families grouped
around umbrellas and sand castles. These two beaches are “musts” for your island visit, but you need to bring your own water,
sun shade, and picnics as these havens are undeveloped and pristine.
WIMCO | 1-877-264-8455 33
Over to the east, Petit Cul de Sac and Grand Cul de Sac provide reef-protected calm amid seemingly endless shallows.
Snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking, and catamaran rentals offer enthusiasts endless pursuits, and the calm, shallow waters
offer welcome to small children.
To the west, Flamands and Colombier are great places to visit for the day. Flamands features long expanses of soft, pure sand
and stunning vistas of craggy offshore islands and views. You reach Colombier overland by foot, hiking from the promontory that
overlooks it, or by boat, anchoring for an afternoon picnic at this secluded and peaceful beach. The best understated local spots
are Marechal, Marigot Bay, Anse des Cayes and Lorient on the north side, then Corossol and Public near Gustavia in the south-
west. If you want the easygoing pace of a neighborhood beach, try Shell Beach in Gustavia at sunset. Parents with schoolchild-
ren will be there for a late afternoon dip, and the cocktails at Do Brazil are perfect after a swim in the gin-clear water.
There is no one place to go to the beach in St. Barths. There are many. Indeed, St. Barths boasts a beach for every mood
and whim.
Snorkeling, windsurfing,
kayaking, and catamaran
rentals offer enthusiasts
endless activities.

Bar complete with live music and a café scene
on the wharf.

10 More shopping! Try the shops of St.
Jean village before going to the beach.

ctivities... There is so much to do on
St. Barths, most of which involves the sea!
Remember, WIMCO is happy to make all your
arrangements for you. All you have to do is
find the time. For our 30th anniversary, here is
our list of the 30 best activities to do while on
your vacation:
1 Take a midnight swim in your private pool
with a million (at least) stars overhead and the
sound of tree frogs in the evening air.
2 Drive over to Gouverneur Beach for a
morning swim before anyone else gets to the
beach. Think, just you and the waves.
3 Sunset dip at Shell Beach, with a drink at
Do Brazil and view the last planes landing for
the day as they clear the ridge before they dip
to the St. Jean airstrip.

ON ST. BARTHS
14 Let’s go surfing! Lorient Beach is our
destination today.
15 The underwater world beckons. Snorkel all
around the rock at Eden Rock and see how
many varieties of fish you can find.
16 Plan a day at Flamands Beach with an
unforgettable lunch at Taiwana.
17 Got the urge to play tennis? Call tennis
pros Frank or Amandine for a tennis date at
Tennis Sensation in Colombier.
18 You don’t have to suspend your fitness
while on vacation. Try a great Pilates class at
Forme Fitness.
19 Drive up to the roundabout suitably called
“La Tormente”. Pull your car over to the
shoulder, and watch the afternoon planes land
and take off. Endlessly suspenseful!
20 How about horseback riding at St Barths
Equitation?
21 Drive out to the Toiny coastline, park your
car and take a walk. Such raw nature and
powerful seascapes!
22 Sit on the terrace high in Lurin at Sante Fe
with a perfectly chilled Rosé and tomato tart.

St. Jean Baie. Afterwards, #24.

and feel the town wake up and start humming.
25 Replace all your cosmetics with French
products from La Pharmacie and La Ligne.
26 Go to Marche U to procure groceries for
the villa, but take time to walk the aisles and
see all the great French products.
27 Hang out at the airport in the late after-
noon waiting for your friends to arrive. Chat
with the WIMCO airport greeters about every-
thing you plan to do with your friends once
they settle in.
28 Dine in your own villa with a romantic
catered dinner for you and your friends.
29 Buy a Pati St. Barths cotton pareo. Wear
your St. Barths vacation around your middle
whenever you suit up, wherever you are visit-
ing, and see how many people come up to
you to talk about St. Barths.
30 Grab an espresso in the WIMCO office
across from the airport, meet our staff and
browse through our villa photos as you dream
about your next St. Barths vacation.

30 YEARS OFFABULOUS FOOD
BY
MONTE
MATHEWS
W as there ever a time when a St. Barths visitor didn’t mention the food? Thirty years ago I set foot
on the island and my jaw dropped. The 23 Caribbean islands I’d previously visited were a sea of jerk
chicken, rice and peas and something called Callaloo, a stew which varied by island but was
universally so spicy it would blow your head off. St. Barths was a revelation. French to the core, this
island took food as seriously as the Guide Michelin. Take fresh local seafood, add over-the-top
provisions from Paris, serve it up with copious amounts of wine, and I had meals I’d never forget.
Oh, there were drawbacks. There was a time when, if you saw orange juice in the Super Marche
and didn’t buy in 30 seconds flat, you wouldn’t see it for another week. Then there was the

heeseburger in Paradise”, celebrated in song by St. Barths habitué Jimmy Buffet. He was right about paradise but
dead wrong about the cheeseburger. Its meat was so tough it was as if the cow had swum over from St. Martin. But
there were high points, too. A restaurant called La Marine promoted Moules-Frites on Wednesday nights when it seemed
the entire island descended en masse to its harbor-side location to feast on mussels prepared French style and served
with impeccable frites. We Americans kept our cholesterol counts up by devouring roasted marrow bones at a place
called Vincent Adam. It later burned to the ground, likely the work of the American Heart Association. And fie on anyone
who had the temerity to want to eat out on Sunday, for the island completely shut down.
Thirty years have gone by, the roads have gotten safer, the hotels posher, the villas grander, and Sunday closings have
gone the way of The Brady Bunch, but St. Barths’ passion for food has just gotten bigger. Every season new flavors
appear with each new restaurant opening. Classic French and Creole cooking has been joined by a wave of Asian and
Italian arrivals. One place even serves Peruvian Ceviche! Remember that cow that swam over from St. Martin? It has
been replaced by beef that could be the envy of Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Today St. Barths is home to over 80 restau-

rants, a major supermarket and mini-markets scattered about, and plenty of traiteurs—gourmet take-out shops brimming
with salads, meats, casseroles, fruits, pastries, everything to make in-home dining a breeze. Also, the island is rife with
expert caterers who busily prepare meals, while your most strenuous effort of the day involves moving your sand chair at
Saline. These pros can whip up anything from Kosher to Kashmiri if you’re so inclined. They will even stock your villa
with everything from kiwis to Coca Cola so you never have to food shop at all. But that would be a terrible mistake.
From your walk into the local pâtissierie for your morning croissants to your last profiterole after dinner, St. Barths is a
culinary feast. Although you may be tempted to linger over your morning pain au chocolat, don’t. Instead, take off early
for the fish market across from the pharmacy on the Rue Bord de Mer in Gustavia. At 6 a.m. the island’s fishermen
gather to sell what must be the freshest fish on earth. You’ll find mahi mahi, wahoo, tuna and Caribbean lobsters,
depending on what’s biting that day. It shuts up tight at noon, as the best fish are long gone by then. To avoid rush hour
in Gustavia, there’s another fish market in Lorient, just before the hill rises into Camaruche. The fish are reliably fresh.
Classic French and Creole cooking has been
joined by a wave of Asian and Italian arrivals.
WIMCO | 1-877-264-8455 67
T hen there’s the produce from Guadeloupe,
St. Barths’ sister island. Since I once spied
haricots verts labeled “Grown in Kenya”,
Guadaloupe is as close to locavore as you’re
going to get. Across from the elementary school
in Lorient is Le Ti-Marche. This tiny store is
packed with both vegetables and locals.
Adhering to the island’s siesta schedule, the
store is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
to 8 p.m. Monday thru Thursday and Saturday.
Friday it’s nonstop from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For
sheer size and variety, there’s nowhere on St.
Barths like Marche U, the supermarket across
from the airport. Cheese lovers take note: while
the food police back home won’t let you near
anything non pasteurized, here you’ll find the real
thing– raw milk cheeses that actually taste like
cheese! Here, too, you can play the game of
“guess what the label means,” then escort home
your saucissons, moutardes and confitures. To
wash them all down, a super-sized selection of
wines, spirits and beers is available. True wine
connoisseurs should head to the Caves. The
selection at Celliers is also a good bet. And
through the wonders of the internet, you can
pre-order for pick-up when you arrive.
For some the most taxing activity of the day is
choosing where to have lunch, dinner or both.
The lunch crowd seeks some shaded terrasse,
drinks Rosé, then wander off home for their
naps. The dinner people vie for tables at both
the new hot spots and old favorites.
Don’t forget that your WIMCO concierge can
make recommendations and reservations for
you. Decisions, decisions. We have put together
a list for your perusal. But since it’s almost
impossible to eat badly on St. Barths, be
adventurous, discover a place no one has
heard of. Then lift your glass, say “Bon Appetit”
and dig in.

no matter where you engage in a real estate transaction, each
community has its own set of rules, regulations, and idiosyn-
crasies which determine the nature of the deal. st. Barthélemy
is a territorial collectivity and an overseas collectivity (coM) of
France and remains part of the european union. the island's in-
habitants are French citizens with eu status holding eu pass-
ports. the native currency is the euro.
there are no particular restrictions on real estate purchases in st.
Barths by a non-resident or foreigner. however, a French con-
veyance transaction by its very nature will introduce the buyer to
a hierarchy of people, concepts and organizations which may be
totally unfamiliar.
With over 280 villas in our rental program and another 40 villas
listed for sale (and ever-changing), we have our fingers on the
pulse of st. Barths villas and her villa owners. We can guide the
potential buyer to properties that best meet your criteria, desires
and future - whether for personal use or investment purposes.
if your ownership includes putting your villa into our rental
program, we can compare villa rental histories and advise you on
best ways to market your villa in the rental marketplace to help
generate income to offset the cost of the property ownership.
We can recommend villa managers to you to care for your

economic upheaval has shaken and stirred the global real estate
market. the media is spattered with stories about the rise and
fall of real estate speculators in abu Dhabi, Las Vegas, and

remained stable and even grown: London, new York, paris...
yes... St. Barths.
