... to our Autumn Winter 2015 season brochure. It is always an enormous pleasure to put together a new concert series at Wiltshire Music Centre and this one is no exception. We are extremely lucky to work and collaborate with so many outstanding international artists and ensembles, and they look forward to coming back to us year after year. We are very pleased to launch a new summer opera festival with three livestreamed performances from the Glyndebourne Festival (p4) with music by Ravel, Mozart and Britten, and we present a full season of opera and ballet performances from the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

This season we particularly explore the relationship between music and other art forms including dance, film and poetry. Music and dance is a theme that runs through the season with performances from City of London Sinfonia (p7), piano duo Joseph Tong and Waka Hasegawa (p14) and a special collaboration with Dame Evelyn Glennie (p25). We also explore music with words in a stunning recital by Ian Bostridge and Xeufei Yang (p13), and Cordelia Williams (p28) presents the culmination of her Messiaen 2015 project Between Heaven and the Clouds. We are delighted to present the Orlando Consort’s inspiring new original soundtrack to Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 film masterpiece La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc (p27).

Other highlights include Rachel Podger leading the Orchestra of the

Age of Enlightenment (p24) in a stunning Bach-inspired programme, Ensemble 360 (p18) presents another searching mixed bill, and the Busch Ensemble (p17) returns after their excellent debut last year. Folk legend Eliza Carthy (p22) presents her new show and we host a rich programme of world music from Mongolia, Finland and India.

We are thrilled to be celebrating the National Youth Jazz Orchestra’s 50th Birthday season (p22) with a day of jazz events that culminate in a special show involving young musicians from across the county. There is also plenty of fun to be had in our kids' and family programme with specially designed performances for younger audiences by NYJO Quintet (p22), Polly Ives and Ensemble 360 (p18), and the award-winning Galliard Ensemble (p29).

Our lunchtime concert series devoted to outstanding younger artists continues with debut performances by brass ensemble Spiritato! (p10) and clarinettist Anthony Bailey (p26), and we launch a new series of daytime study sessions led by Jonathan James (Discovering Music) (p10,

p24) which explore some of the works in our season programme.

As always there are plenty of other ways to engage with our artists and the music we present beyond the platform, so please join us for one of our free pre-concert talks, panel discussions or musical workshops.

It promises to be another bumper season so we look forward to welcoming you to the Centre soon.

Discovering Music: from courts to concert hall – the evolution of the string quartet

Join music educator and conductor Jonathan James for this interactive study session delving into the historical and musical context behind the forthcoming concert by the Doric String Quartet (Sat 3 Oct).

Ever since Haydn put the string quartet on the map in the 1760s, composers have been drawn to it as a vital means of expressing their ideas. This session explores how the genre has developed over two hundred years, from classical beginnings to modern masterpieces.

In 1842 Schumann turned his intense focus to the string quartet. In what has been called his ‘year of chamber music’, he voraciously studied the masters that preceded him (including Haydn) and produced a set of three quartets, Op 41.

Composed almost a century later in 1928 Bartók’s fourth string quartet is considered to be among his greatest works and conveys his boundless creativity and exuberance.

Prokofiev’s ravishing and playful Cinderella Suite is the perfect companion to the piano duet version of Stravinsky’s iconic work. In this special collaborative concert virtuoso sarod player Soumik Datta links his Indian classical training with bold, progressive sounds, and explores a rich sound world between Radiohead and Pink Floyd. Renowned tabla player Shahbaz Hussain is heralded as one of the most exciting performers of his generation and was awarded the prestigious ‘Son of Lahore’ from the government of Pakistan in 2008.

Soumik Datta and Shahbaz Hussain lead a practical session for advanced string, woodwind, brass and percussion players that explores different perspectives on Indian music. CREATIVE LEARNING PROGRAMMEWiltshire Music Centre was founded on a commitment to nurture musical ability or interest, regardless of age or background. WMC's Creative Learning Programme is at the heart of everything we do and provides local schools, families and communities access to high quality music-making and participatory experiences.

We are proud of our local partnerships with a wide range of music leaders and project partners, locally and nationally, and offer a creatively rich and diverse programme to our audience. We continue as a strategic partner with Wiltshire Music Connect (the music education hub for Wiltshire) to help to shape and inform excellence in music education with particular emphasis on our new role in managing the Wiltshire & Swindon Youth Orchestra and the Wiltshire Youth Jazz Orchestra.

As part of our commitment to the local community we are especially proud of our continued relationship with St Laurence School Bradford on Avon. We have enjoyed developing our work further over the past year working on a World War One Composition Project with their GCSE students and working closely with two highly motivated and inspiring 6th form students as part of our team of Young Curators.

As well as three engaging family concerts across this Autumn Winter season we are also making strides off the concert platform in developing our long established work with our local Special Schools. Musicians Alex Lupo, Tom Mauger and film maker Mark Bishop work with five schools on individually tailored school based projects as part of the Special Schools Festival in July 2015. Inclusive workshops aim to build self-awareness, confidence and self-esteem, collaborative working skills and creativity, while being sensitive to the differing needs of the children and the staff supporting them.

Finally, the Wiltshire Music Centre has been appointed a Champion for the BBC's Get Creative campaign, a year-long celebration of the world-class arts, culture and

creativity that happens every day across the UK. As a Champion we showcase our enormous range of musical activity with masterclasses, workshops and special events, so keep an eye open for how you can be part of this nationwide celebration.

BOOKING INFORMATION

HOW TO BOOKBY PHONE 01225 860 100 / IN PERSON Mon – Fri 10am – 6pm; and to interval end (approx. 8.30pm) on concert evenings. Sat – Sun from 10am for a morning concert; and from 2pm to interval end for an afternoon or evening concert.

ONLINE wiltshiremusic.org.uk Secure and easy online booking 24 hours a day. £2.50 administration fee charged per transaction for online ticket purchases only.

A voluntary donation of £1 per transaction is requested to contribute towards the future of the Wiltshire Music Centre. Tickets can be collected at anytime up to concert start or posted to you for £1 to cover postage.

Two weeks of Priority Booking are available to all Friends of Wiltshire Music Centre. Memberships start at £30 a year and can be bought at any time from the Box Office on 01225 860 100 (pay by card or request a standing order form).

DISCOUNTS Only one discount may be applied to each ticket. Concession tickets – indicated in brackets ( ) – are offered on specified concerts. Please contact Box Office for availability. Carer’s Ticket: one complimentary carer’s ticket is available to those registered disabled and requiring assistance to attend.Groups 10+: receive £2 off per ticket. Group organisers receive one free ticket plus one free drink and one free programme. If you are interested in booking tickets for a group, please contact the Box Office 01225 860 100 for help with organising your visit. Multibuy discount: get a £1 discount per ticket on an equivalent number of tickets when booking for three or more different specified concerts at the same time. Bring Your Kid For A Quid (Quid-A-Kid): offered on specified concerts to broaden your childrens’ musical experiences. Up to two Under-18s pay just £1 each when their tickets are bought with one full-price ticket to the same concert.

Under-18s: are eligible for half price tickets on specified concerts.

Free Under-25s Tickets: we are delighted to offer free tickets to Under-25 year olds (inclusive) on selected classical concerts, thanks to our collaboration with the acclaimed CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust (cavatina.net). Please quote CAVATINA when booking a ticket (01225 860 100).

ACCESS

FOR WHEELCHAIR USERS there is level access to most parts of the Centre and specific parking bays close to the main entrance off Churches and Winsley Road.

ADAPTED TOILETS are available.

BABY CHANGING FACILITIES and PUSHCHAIR STORAGE are available.

For BRAILLE USERS there are tactile signs throughout the Centre.

PEOPLE WITH HEARING DIFFICULTIES OR IMPAIRMENTS can use the Centre’s induction loops at the bar and Box Office. The auditorium has an infrared system. Please ask at the Box Office for headphones or a portable neck loop.

GUIDE DOGS / ASSISTING DOGS are very welcome.

All 300 seats in our purpose-built concert hall have unrestricted views of the stage. The auditorium was designed for excellent sound quality.

Buy This, Try This: buy tickets for specified concerts and save 50% per ticket for a paired event. For example, should you buy a ticket for Soumik Datta (p15), this entitles you to buy a ticket for Huun-Huur-Tu (p26) for £7 (normal ticket price £14).

TICKET RETURNSWe offer a resale service for sold-out events only at an administration fee of £1 per ticket. Return your tickets no later than 5 hours before the performance. If resold, we can offer you a credit against a future concert. We regret that we are unable to refund tickets.

GIFT VOUCHERSGive your loved ones the gift of music. An ideal present for music lovers, Gift Vouchers can be used to buy tickets for any concert at the Centre, to buy a Friends’ Membership or to make a donation. Available in any denomination and with a one year expiry date, they can be redeemed in person at the Box Office or over the phone.

CAFÉ BAR OPENING TIMESThe Centre and its fully licensed bar is open to audience members 30 minutes before each concert. Please allow 15 minutes to collect tickets and to order interval drinks.

Wiltshire Music Centre, Ashley Road, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire BA15 1DZ

The Centre is located on the Bath side of Bradford on Avon, and is clearly sign-posted (brown panel signs) on all roads.

Parking is free on-site. For evening concerts please use the Ashley Road car park on the St Laurence School site. Additional / disabled blue badge holders parking is available in the car park off Winsley Road / Churches. Please park responsibly.

Bradford on Avon Train Station is a 20 minute (uphill) walk or short taxi ride away: firstgreatwestern.co.uk

Bradford on Avon Taxis is located in the Train Station car park: 01225 862 277.

Bus Route 265 (Bath – Warminster) stops close to the Centre – ask for the Churches stop on Winsley Road and then follow directional signs: firstgroup.com
