Butch’s Tree Service
(Workman’s Compensation
& Liability)
I answer a LOT of gardening questions and it is interesting to see the questions change as the season progresses. There’s one misconception that crops up every year as summer begins... the difference between “planting” and “transplanting”...and there is a HUGE difference.
on sale and seems like they want to purchase some but then they’ll say this, “I should prob-ably wait though.” Then I’ll ask, “Why?”
“I read that you shouldn’t transplant shrubs during summer.” Over the years, I’ve heard this many, many times before and, quite literally speaking, the statement is true but that isn’t what they are talking about...there’s a major difference between “planting” and “transplanting”.
When you’re digging up and moving an already established tree or shrub, that’s called trans-planting. If you attempt this during the long hot days of summer when the plant is in the full
the plant is dormant during late fall or very early spring as soon as the soil can be worked.
When you shop in your local garden center, you are buying plants that were dug and potted much earlier when the plant was still dormant. When you bring your new shrub or perennial
Many folks put off their planting until fall because they think that they shouldn’t do it now.
to plant in summer, landscapers would be out of business.
OK, now that we’ve cleared up that bit of confusion, let’s take a look at how to properly plant a shrub or tree to avoid a deadly (for the plants) mistake many folks make.
I’ve also seen my share of dead shrubs and trees. Over the years a pattern has become emerged. 90% of the dead shrubs and tree I see failed because they were planted too deeply. You can still see the dirt on the stem way above the crown of the plant. When the crown of the plant is below the soil and the bark at the base of the tree is covered with dirt, it will eventually die. Let’s go review correct way to plant.
Dig the hole only as deep as the root ball or the pot but twice as wide. If you’ve dug too
stem under the soil. The spot on the tree trunk where the soil is in the pot or ball needs to be visible after planting. I used to add bone meal to the bottom of the planting hole. These days I’ve switched to something better. For an average sized tree or shrub, you’ll want to add about a cup of Bio-Tone. Bio-Tone contains bone meal plus other great ingredients for start-ing a strong root system. If the soil is extra sandy, add peat moss to help improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture.
The spot where the trunk of the tree meets the soil of its ball or pot should exactly match the level of the soil around your planting hole. The easiest way to check this is to lay a stick (the handle of your shovel works) across the planting hole and make sure that the top of the root ball is level with the ground.
Once you’ve made sure that the crown of the plant (the dividing line on the plant between

to pile it up around the trunk or stem. I guess it looks cozy, like tucking the plant in or some-
stem or trunk above ground is covered with soil, it hinders the plant’s ability to pass moisture and nutrients from the root system to the branches and leaves above. Use the extra soil to build a dish-shaped dike or berm out away from the stem of the plant. Water heavily after planting to remove any air pockets from the soil. The importance of maintaining proper planting depth extends to 99% of planting situations.
You should also take care when applying bark and other mulches not to pile them up against the stems and trunks of plants. I’m always (sadly) amazed when I see trees with bark mulch

DID YOU KNOW?'Tis the season for barbecues, picnics and outdoor entertaining. As the weather warms, people take to the outdoors in droves, eager to enjoy the sunshine and the pleasant tem-peratures. Some may argue that grills, with their charcoal and natural gas heating com-ponents sending carbon gases into the air, are bad for the environment. But thedisposable plastic containers, dishes and cutlery that are staples of outdoor entertainingmay be more harmful to the environment. In addition to the energy expended and thechemicals used to produce plastic products, disposable items often end up in stormdrains, and from those drains they wash into waterways and oceans, where pieces ofthe plastic are consumed by fish and other aquatic animals. If the plastic does not injureor kill the fish, it may end up contaminating the animal, passing on dangerous chemicalsif that fish later becomes a food source. Many plastics marked as #1 or #7 can be recy-cled and made into new items, even fabrics. Even plastic products that cannot be recy-cled can be reused. Bring picnic and barbecue supplies home to wash and use again. To cut down on excess in landfills, limit use of disposable serviceware. While less con-venient, cloth napkins, reusable plates, silverware, and cups are better for the environ-ment. Designate a special set of items for outdoor use that can be used again and again.
FAST FACTS ABOUT GRASS A lush, green lawn is coveted by many current and would-be homeowners. Not only cana beautiful landscape make a home feel more welcoming, but it also increases the resalevalue of a property.
Frequent watering, proper fertilization, pest management, and mowing are all essentialcomponents of lawn maintenance. But there is more to those beautiful blades of grassthan just aesthetic appeal. The following are some interesting facts about grass that eventhe most devoted lawn enthusiasts might be surprised to learn.
* Grass is defined as any plant of the family Gramineae, a group of vascular plants thatgrow across the globe.
* There are as many as 10,000 varieties of grass in the world. These range from grassto rice to wheat to bamboo.
* Many grasses are annual or perennial herbs with fibrous roots and rhizomes.
* Grass can withstand many different climates and has been discovered at the NorthPole and at the equator.
* Twenty percent of Earth's vegetation is comprised of grass.
* Grasses have been transformed into paper and home decor items. Bamboo, which isa type of grass, is frequently used for flooring because it is durable and sustainable.
* Grass is mostly comprised of water, which makes up about 80 percent of grass and 90percent of grass clippings.
* A typical lawn will have about six grass plants per square inch. Some lawns may havemillions of grass plants.
* The average lawn releases enough oxygen to sustain four families of four.

DID YOU KNOW?Many flowers compete with one another to attract butterflies, birds and bees for pollina-tion, but at least two species of flowering plants have enhanced their ability to attract in-sects in unique ways. The titan arum (Amorphophallus titanium) is native to westernSumatra, where it grows in openings in rainforests. It is the largest unbranched flower inthe world and can reach up to 15 feet tall. But this alone is not what makes the titan arumso special. It is unwise to step in close to get a whiff of this enormous bloom, as the plantgives off a rancid odor reminiscent of rotting meat. It is sometimes known as the carrionplant or the corpse plant for this reason. The plant has created this scent to attract fliesfor pollination. The rafflesia, which is native to southeastern Asia as well, is another plantthat produces a rotting aroma to attract insects. The rafflesia has no stems, leaves ortrue roots -- it's basically one large flower.
DID YOU KNOW?Watering a lawn can do more harm than good if the lawn is not watered correctly. Ex-cessive watering is a waste of water and can cost homeowners money while harmingthe environment at the same time. Water that is not absorbed by the lawn can result inrunoff, which causes nitrogen in the grass, any fertilizer that was applied and chemicalsin the water itself to run into gutters and eventually pollute streams, rivers and oceans. In addition, grass needs oxygen in the soil to grow properly. But when a lawn is overwa-tered, the oxygen between the soil particles is pushed out, depriving roots of the oxygenthey need to grow in strong. This leads to shallow root systems, which make a lawn moresusceptible to stress, disease and insect infestation. But overwatering can also be un-sightly, as lawns that are overwatered tend to have more weeds, robbing even the green-est of lawns of its aesthetic appeal.
DID YOU KNOW?Many homeowners prefer the look and durability of real hardwood flooring. It can be ex-citing to install new flooring, and you may be anxious to start transforming a room. Butbefore diving right in, it's necessary to acclimate wood flooring to a home. Otherwise, you may end up with buckled wood or other problems. Hardwood flooring needs to sit inthe room where it will be installed for anywhere between five and 10 days or in adherenceto the manufacturer recommendations. This gives the new flooring time to adjust to thehumidity level and temperature of the home. Natural wood shrinks and expands due totemperature fluctuations, which is why it is essential to match the conditions in the homebefore working with the flooring. The boards can be acclimated in the boxes (with theends opened) or outside of the boxes.

9 WAYS TO IMPROVE CURB APPEALHomeowners who want their homes to make strong first
impressions must prioritize curb appeal. Homes withstrong curb appeal sell well and can impart a welcomingfeel to all visitors. Improving curb appeal need not be ex-pensive, and the following are a handful of ways to im-prove the appearance of your home.
1. Install a bold-looking door in a vibrant color or one witha custom design. This helps the home stand out fromother properties in the neighborhood.
2. Edge the driveway to create a distinct border betweenthe driveway and the lawn or other landscaping features. This helps homes appear neat and well kept.
3. Use outdoor lighting to make a home more inviting.Outdoor lighting also makes properties safer to traverseat night.
4. Clean a home's exterior to remove mildew or discol-orations from the siding, driveway, patio, and other out-door elements.
5. Improve landscapes with fresh plants and seasonalcolor. Homeowners without the time to plant can considercontainer gardens, which don't take much time to assem-ble but still add appeal to a home's exterior.
6. Prune planting beds and add new mulch to restorecolor.
7. Add shutters and accent trim to a home's exterior to im-prove on the beauty of the house.
8. Install new fencing or give a fresh coat of paint or stainto an existing fence.
9. Replace concrete paths with tile or stone walkways tomake entryways more impressive and inviting.

TOP THREE AUTO REPAIR RED FLAGS(NAPSI)—Finding an auto repair shop you can trust can be a challenge. Here are threewarning signs to watch for on your next trip to the mechanic.
• While no one likes to be overcharged, beware of estimates that are well under marketrate. This can be a sign the mechanic is using low-quality or even used parts. Some me-chanics use lowball estimates to lure you in for additional repairs that they will tack onlater.
• Automotive technology is rapidly evolving and some shops fail to keep up. Without up-to-date diagnostic tools, a mechanic could misdiagnose your problem, which meansyou’ll pay for unnecessary repairs that don’t even fix your original problem.
• If a mechanic employs scare tactics or treats you in a condescending way, move on. Areputable mechanic will take the time to explain your options just as a doctor guides youto make the right decision for your health.
Fortunately, there’s a free service called RepairPal that can help consumers find a trust-worthy local mechanic. RepairPal independently certifies auto repair shops nationwidefor superior training, quality tools, fair pricing standards and a minimum 12-month/12,000-mile warranty.
RepairPal also provides car owners with a tool that brings transparency to repair costs—the RepairPrice Estimator. Cited as a resource by Consumer Reports, AOL Autos andCars.com, this patented calculator generates fair price quotes based on the user’s au-tomobile, location, and the service requested. All mechanics in the RepairPal Certifiedshop network honor these estimates to give consumers peace of mind that they’ll neverbe overcharged.

BUYING A ONCE-WRECKED CAR(NAPSI)—When it comes to used cars, safety is no accident. But an accident shouldn’tkeep you from buying a used car you love. In fact, you may drive away with a bargain.
The ProblemThere are plenty of previously damaged cars out there. In the U.S., car crashes happenabout every 60 seconds—and one in six used cars being sold has been in an accident. The key is to know what you’re buying.
An AnswerYou can start your used car search at the new Carfax.com. Every car for sale comeswith a free Carfax Report that includes any reported accidents. It’ll help you tell thingslike how severe the accident was, what areas of the car were damaged and if the airbags deployed. Next, get a mechanic to help you determine if the car was repaired prop-erly.
Following these steps can help you find a swan where others see only an ugly duckling.
Learn MoreYou can get more information and shop for great used cars at the new www.carfax.com.
