Attendance & Tardies

A key ingredient for ensuring academic success in school is helping children get into the habit of attending school every day. Consistent attendance is necessary for students to achieve their highest academic potential. The more our students are in school, the more they learn, the higher their grades will be, the more they will enjoy school, and the more likely they are to succeed in career and life. Education Codes 46010, 48200 and 48260 mandates that all students 6 to 18 years of age attend school regularly. We need your help to ensure that children are in school EVERY DAY & ON TIME.

TRUANCY

Education Code, Section 48200 requires students between the ages of 6 and 18 to attend school full time. Truancy is defined as a student who has THREE OR MORE unexcused absences and/or tardies (30 minutes or more in duration) within one school year (Ed. Code 48260).

CHRONIC ABSENCE

Chronic Absence is defined as missing 10 percent or more of school days in a year FOR ANY REASON (16 DAYS OR MORE). Students who miss 10 percent or more of school, excused OR unexcused, are at great academic risk.

ABSENCE NOTIFICATION

When your child is absent: ● Please send a note the day your child returns to school. ● A doctor’s note is needed for absences exceeding 2 days. The note should include the following:

➢ First and last name of child ➢ Exact dates of absence ➢ Reason for absence (specific illness, for example: cold, headache, etc.) ➢ Parent’s signature

Absences are only excused if due to: ➢ Student illness ➢ Medical appointments (student, not parent with written proof; doctor’s note) ➢ Court appearance (student, not parent with written proof) ➢ Religious holiday ➢ Funeral of immediate family member

If a child has contracted a communicable disease, he/she must have a re-admission note signed by the family physician.

TARDIES

School begins PROMPTLY at 8:40 a.m. The front gate will close when the bell rings each morning at 8:45 a.m. Students who arrive after the 8:45 a.m. bell are considered tardy and must report to the office to receive a tardy slip before going to class. (3 TARDIES AFTER 9:00 A.M. EQUAL TO 1 ABSENCE.)

Tardies are only excused if due to: ➢ Medical or dental appointments (must show written proof; doctor’s note) ➢ Court appearance (must show written proof)

NOTE: Excessive absences and/or tardies may result in the following: ➢ A letter sent home by the school and/or district ➢ SST meeting may be held to discuss concerns ➢ Request for parent meeting at our school site (SART meeting – School Attendance Review Team) ➢ Referral to SARB (School Attendance Review Board) at the District Office with a district attorney

LEAVING EARLY

Only parents, legal guardians and persons who are listed on the Emergency Card (18 or over) may pick up and sign out students before school is out for the day. All persons must show a valid photo identification card when signing-out students. If your child needs to leave early, please make sure to do the following:

➢ Visit the school office, not the classroom. Teachers cannot release a student to a parent directly from the classroom. ➢ Be prepared to show office personnel a valid photo identification card. ➢ Sign the “Student Sign-Out Book”. Your child will meet you in the office to be released. ➢ If your child is returning the same day, you must check the child in at the office before he/she returns to class.

ATTENDANCE INCENTIVES

Wilson offers various student incentives to promote attendance. They are: ➢ Random prize raffles for students who come to school on that day. Student names are called out over the intercom and students may earn

a prize. ➢ The class with the highest attendance at the end of each month earns a Healthy Classroom Party. ➢ At the end of each quarter, students who have PERFECT ATTENDANCE receive an award. In order to earn this award, students

must come to school on time every day (before 8:40 a.m.) and must have NO MORE THAN 3 LEAVE EARLIES for that quarter.

Asistencia Y Llegadas Tardes

➢ Improve school climate and safety ➢ Increase academic achievement and performance ➢ Decrease classroom disruptions and office discipline referrals

Wilson established a PBIS Site Team, consisting of the principal, teachers, classified personnel, and parents. In the 2014-2015 school year, the team began the planning with all teachers, which included:

➢ Developing a Statement of Behavior Purpose ➢ Identify Positive School-wide Behavioral Expectations ➢ Developing procedures for teaching school-wide behavior expectations ➢ Establishing rewards systems to encourage and strengthen appropriate behavior ➢ Providing Interventions for students who demonstrate inappropriate behavior

WILSON’S STATEMENT OF BEHAVIOR PURPOSE The Wilson family values everyone and promotes positive behavior by being respectful, responsible and fair to create a safe, friendly and rigorous learning environment! BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS (R.O.A.R.S.): Our school will be focusing on four behavior expectations school-wide. We believe this will give each child more opportunity for success and improve educational outcomes. The school-wide behavior expectations are:

➢ Respect ➢ Optimism ➢ Achievement ➢ Responsibility ➢ Safety

Expectations for student behavior are clear. These expectations will be taught to students just like any other subject matter. Students will learn skills such as conflict resolutions through class discussions, real-life scenarios and discipline assemblies with school administrators. STUDENT REWARDS Students will earn different types of rewards for demonstrating appropriate behavior. They are:

➢ Verbal Praise ➢ PBIS Tickets ➢ Classroom Prizes ➢ PBIS Activities

FAILURE TO MEET EXPECTATIONS The consequences for breaking school rules will depend on several circumstances:

➢ The seriousness of the rule that was broken ➢ The age of the student ➢ Previous warnings or referrals for behavior

The staff will determine the most effective and appropriate form of consequence for misbehavior. The following are possible consequences:

➢ Warning or counseling from school staff ➢ Detention during recess and/or another classroom ➢ Loss of privileges ➢ Referral to the principal’s office ➢ Restriction from school activities such as assemblies ➢ A note or phone call to parent, or conference with parent ➢ On-campus and/or Off-campus suspensions (see severe misbehaviors)

SEVERE MISBEHAVIORS The following are severe misbehaviors that will result in an automatic referral to the principal. Parents will be contacted by phone or note home.

➢ Fighting, physical injury or attempting to cause injury ➢ Willful defiance or disrespect to an adult staff member ➢ Stealing, defacing, or damaging property ➢ Possession of a weapon, explosive, laser pointer, dangerous object or look-alike toy ➢ Possession, use or sale of a controlled substance, beverage, tobacco or illegal drug ➢ Profanity or obscene acts ➢ Threats, bullying, cyber bullying or sexual harassment ➢ Repeated failure to follow classroom or school standards ➢ Any other serious ed. code violations

Consequences for severe misbehavior include:

➢ On-campus suspension; off-campus suspension ➢ Parent/teacher/principal meeting ➢ Behavior contracts ➢ Referral to the school Student Success Team (SST)

RECUERDE QUE UNA BUENA NUTRICIÓN = NIÑOS SALUDABLES!!! ☺ Parent Involvement Wilson welcomes parent volunteers! You can volunteer in many ways and places. Some parents help us from their homes. Others work in classrooms, with the principal, with the school nurse or in the library. With the grand opening of our new PARENT CENTER, parent volunteers can also work there. Parents are encouraged to share their special talents or knowledge with our teachers and students. Parents who volunteer on a regular basis must have a current TB test. Any parent that wishes to volunteer in the classroom during instructional time must be fingerprinted and have a current TB test. In addition, parents must make arrangements with the teacher ahead of time. This will help to avoid disruptions to the educational program. We also have many opportunities for involving parents as partners in the decision-making process related to student achievement. ➢ School Site Council (SSC) ➢ English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) ➢ District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) ➢ School Advisory Council (SAC) ➢ District Advisory Council (DAC) ➢ Parent Advisory Council (PAC) – Migrant Education ➢ Community Advisory Council (CAC) ➢ District African-American Advisory Parent Council (DAAAPC) ➢ Student Success Team (SST) – This team meets to address student needs including academics, behavior and

attendance. ➢ Various other committees

We also offer various parent workshops (behavior/discipline, academics, health/nutrition, etc.) throughout the school year. Parents are encouraged to attend our Back-to-School Night, Open House, Science Fair, College Fair, Quarterly Awards Ceremonies, and other school events. HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION We strive to maintain good communication with our school community through the school website, newsletters, flyers, Class Dojo and automated phone calls to homes. For your convenience, make an appointment in advance with school personnel to ensure their availability. Please ask the school office to convey messages to your child only in case of an emergency. The office staff will NOT interrupt classroom instruction time to transfer phone calls or deliver non urgent messages. To get further details about your child’s progress in school or to learn how you can help if your child is struggling, call the teacher to set up a parent/teacher conference. Our teachers will be glad to meet with you any time during the school year.
