WILLUNGA CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2014

The Festival Experience

We all cannot stop talking

about the Christmas Tree

Festival in 2014.

It is an event that

Willunga Uniting church

has hosted for 13 years.

A wonderful collective of

Christmas trees, advent

wreaths gatherings,

worship, market stalls and

stories about our past,

present and future.

Our volunteers have

excelled in producing a

beautiful display, which

included a manger setting

with a place to write your

hopes.

We also captured our

own piece of the past by

installing an 1800’s hay

cart in the bell paddock –

topped off with a

Christmas tree.

Our festival is gloriously

creative, thought

provoking, humorous and

spiritual. Everyone of all

ages who came, voted for

his or her choice for the

best tree. The top three

entries from more than

forty-five entered can

now be announced. First

prize was an entry from

Landcare by John

Campbell; Second prize

to the Willunga

Environment Centre; and

third prize to the Willunga

Preschool.

The novelty prize went to

Rachael Boulden for the

very inventive tree

entitled, Music: Past,

Present, and Future.

A certain vintage looking

aghast, thinking of all the

scratches on those

precious vinyl records.

A huge thank you to

everyone who entered a

Christmas tree!

was removed in the 1970s.

Hello fellow gazette readers, Happy New Year to you all! I would like to introduce myself as the newly appointed and very proud editor for the Willunga Gazette. My name is Helen Mouneimne and I am a proud resident of Willunga. My husband Hani and I have been living here since 2012. Although we haven’t been living here for very long, it certainly feels like home to us. The warm welcoming community spirit reigns through everyone we have met so far and I hope to meet many more of you through my new role. My background includes study in public relations and marketing. I worked in banking and finance for around 10 years however my most recent ventures includes owning a bridal store in Sturt for the past 5 years. My passions include travelling, cooking, gardening and spending time with my family and friends. I wanted to be more involved in my community in some way and I believe that this position will allow me to meet more of our wonderful readers, businesses and individuals in the area. Over the next few editions, you will notice some changes. I would like to introduce sections of the Gazette where the readers can be more involved in the content of the gazette

Letters to the Editor Hi Helen, Just thought I’d keep you posted on some of the noises we have been hearing lately near the golf course. The council along with the Golf Course seems to be trialing gas guns on the course to keep birds off of it. We seem to hear it

every second day or so usually once at dusk and once at dawn. It’s no bother as it’s not very loud from where we are but thought other residents may be wondering what the “bangs” were about. Regards, Chelsea.

New Year’s Resolution: Spend more time in the garden

Willunga in my opinion is flooded with talented green thumbs. Veggie patches are such a feature that they are seen in front gardens as well as in the back of the yard. Since moving to Willunga, I have tried to apply my inner green thumb to my garden with some success. With the warmer months of the year well and truly here, I am finding it a little harder to get on top of things like watering. Luckily there are so many wonderful people to ask in the area, and our local library has some great books with tips and tricks as to what to plant and when. If you have any gardening news to share including any photos please send them through to me.

Southern

Theatre and ARts Supporters Keeping Arts Alive Southern Theatre and Arts Supporters (STARS) is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers whose aim is to support and promote the development of the arts in the southern region and Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia.

STARS is based at Waverley Homestead, St Peters Terrace Willunga and presents regular artistic and cultural events such as operas, concerts, art exhibitions, workshops and open days. STARS liaises closely with local and other community organisations and groups, schools etc. to encourage participation in the arts and cultural activities by younger and older people.

Over the years, STARS has been able to liaise with Co-opera, the Helpmann Academy, the SALA Festival and The Fringe to co-present many concerts and events and most importantly award talent with financial assistance. STARS has donated in excess of $2,000 on a yearly basis in the form of grants and award to artists and performers to assist and encourage their development both in South Australia and overseas.

Additionally, the group takes a very active role in local events and in promoting the township of Willunga, South Australia.

The McLaren Vale Regional award and various citizen awards have been given to STARS and its members for service to the community and excellence in the Arts. Over the Christmas break we received an email regarding a Christmas gift idea and what a great one it was: Good afternoon, Judith Barr reminded me last night that we all have somebody who we don’t know what to buy for, or those last minute gifts we are struggling with –she solved her dilemma by purchasing a Membership to STARS! EXHIBITION: Breakaway Versus Peloton! By Elinor Alexander December 1, 2014 - January 30, 2015 Fox Creek Cellar Door Gallery This series of paintings celebrates the many cold late nights and early mornings spent by Australian cycling fans watching Le Tour de France over 3 weeks amidst the antipodean winter. It also celebrates McLaren Vale linking cycling to brilliant wine as it continues to host the Tour Down Under’s most critical stage, which takes place close to Fox Creek and features the Willunga Hill climb. The South Australian based artist, Elinor Alexander, is a keen cyclist who has followed Le Tour for many years; she has also ridden through McLaren Vale and up Willunga Hill a number of times and has been a member of the Fox Creek Wine Club for years. On weekends she frequents Adelaide’s iconic Mt Lofty route,

cycling early in the morning. Elinor has studied painting and drawing part time to a second year level at Adelaide Central School of Arts and keeps her artistic tool kit sharp by annually completing ACSA master classes and courses. A geologist by trade, Elinor is fascinated by landscapes and what lies beneath. She was a finalist in the 2013 Fleurieu Landscape competition and has fulfilled a number of commissions. You will find a series of abstracted micro-landscapes included in this exhibition, they are all hilly and reflect some of the more Alpine topography of cycling.

Recipe of the Month

- Lamingtons! With Australia Day approaching in January, traditional recipes come to mind. This month I have chosen the humble Lamington to feature for our first recipe of the month segment. History recalls the Australian lamington was created in December of 1901 in Government House in Queensland, where Lord Lamington was residing as the then-Governor of Queensland. Depending on which article you read on the internets, the lamington was either created by a maid working in the Government House kitchen who accidentally dropped a piece of sponge cake in melted chocolate, and at the suggestion of Lord Lamington, it was then sprinkled in shredded coconut to keep his fingers clean, or it was created out of a lack of ingredients by the chef at Government House when he was called upon unexpectedly to create something tasty for guests. There’s even another article that claims that whatever you read about the history of the lamington is probably a myth, as they were most likely created by Amy Shauer in a cooking class and named after Lady Lamington, who was the school’s patroness. Whatever their true history, lamingtons are an Australian icon and you can find them in any bakery and supermarket

across Australia. The fun behind making them though is all too worthwhile not to try them at home. Lamingtons are cube-shaped pieces of sponge cake, usually day-old sponge cake that are dipped in chocolate icing and then rolled in shredded coconut. Variations include coloured icing such as pink, yellow and on Saint Pat’s day even green. Lamingtons can be filled with either jam or cream (or even both) but whichever way you chose to decorate these delicious squares of yumminess, make sure you pair them alongside a hot cuppa. Homemade lamingtons made with shredded coconut.

Ingredients 6 eggs 3/4 cup caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup cornflower 1/2 cup self-raising flour 1/2 cup plain flour 20g butter, melted 3 cups desiccated coconut (you can also use shredded coconut for a more rustic look) Chocolate Icing: 5 Cups of icing sugar mixture 3/4 cup coco powder sifted 3/4 cup milk 20 grams butter, chopped Method: Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Grease a 4.5cm deep, 23cm x 33cm (base) roasting pan. Line base and sides with baking paper, extending paper 3cm above edges of pan.

Using an electric mixer, beat eggs, sugar and vanilla together for 8 minutes or until mixture becomes thick and creamy.

Meanwhile, triple-sift cornflower, self-raising flour and plain flour together. Sift over egg mixture. Using a spatula or whisk, fold in flours until just combined. Fold in butter. Pour mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until sponge is golden and just firm to touch. Turn onto a wire rack lined with baking paper. Cool completely. Trim edges of sponge. Cut sponge into 24 squares.

Make Chocolate Icing: Place icing sugar, cocoa, milk and butter in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir over heat until combined and smooth. Place coconut in a bowl. Using a fork, toss one piece of sponge in icing to coat (see note Drain off excess icing. Toss in coconut to coat all over. Transfer to a baking paper-lined tray. Repeat with remaining sponge, icing and coconut. Set aside for 1 hour to set. Serve.

Daddy’s Little Legend appeal for a Retcam Machine for the neonatal unit at the Flinders Medical Centre

One year ago this month our son Robert launched his appeal to support the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation and the Neonatal Unit for the purchase of a Retcam Machine for the unit, which was top of their wish list. Charlie, Robert’s daughter, was six weeks old and she had to have an eye test to check for signs of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). A condition that can affect premature babies born under 32 weeks gestation, like Charlie, when the blood vessels in their eyes stop growing or grow abnormally. Not treated, it can cause blindness. A Retcam Machine is a special digital camera that helps doctors detect the early signs of ROP and make the essential eye test easier and non-stressful for babies and their families. Robert became a daddy on a mission to make their wish come true. Many people from Willunga and the surrounding communities have attended fundraising events and donated to our son’s appeal. Together, with people from various parts of South Australia who have made individual donations or organized fundraising events.

By the beginning of November this year Robert’s appeal had raised just over $40,000. This, together with fundraising undertaken by the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation, the neonatal nurses at the Flinders Medical Centre, and other prominent people, has resulted in the Foundation placing an order for the Retcam Machine. This machine will be presented to the Foundation Neonatal Unit at the Flinders Medical Centre this month. No longer will premature babies have to undergo such stressful essential eye tests, and the tests will be far more accurate. A very big thank you to everyone in Willunga and surrounding communities who supported this important appeal, to the local businesses who willingly got involved and to those people who have approached me to ask how the appeal was progressing and to ask after the progress of our gorgeous granddaughter. Charlie brings us all so much joy, she is making good progress and is a happy little toddler. With our grateful thanks from the van Driel family. Wonderful news for the van Driel family.
