*CALL TO CONFESSION

Leader: Because of such great mercy, God is ready to forgive all the ways we fail to live in faithfulness. Relying on that mercy, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)

Trusting you does not always come easy when each day we are faced with the ugliness of the world. We do not believe that love conquers fear. We are not convinced that power comes through weakness. We cannot conceive how you could heal us. Forgive our lack of faith, O God, and renew our trust in you, for we would be disciples of Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.

A TIME FOR SILENT PRAYER

*KYRIE Lord, Have Mercy Weaver

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Beloved, God loves us, forgives us, and frees us from our sins; therefore be at peace and love with boldness and generosity.

THE WORD

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (Unison)

Loving God, your Word has the power to restore our lives. Open our hearts to the presence of your Spirit, for you are mighty to save. Amen.

FIRST LESSON: 2 Corinthians 8:7-9 7 Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.

8 I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. 9 For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.

This is the Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God!

PSALM 30 (Responsive)

Leader: I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up, and did not let my foes rejoice over me. People: O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. Leader: O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit. People: Sing praises to the Lord, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. Leader: For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning. People: As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.” Leader: By your favor, O Lord, you had established me as a strong mountain; you hid your face; I was dismayed. People: To you, O Lord, I cried, and to the Lord I made supplication:

(The Psalm continues on the next pages)

Page 5: WILLIAMSBURG PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SIXTH SUNDAY …...Norman Elton, Organist and Assistant Director of Music Chancel Choir SHARING FAITH WITH CHILDREN John E. Morgan AUDIO AND VIDEO

Leader: “What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the Pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it tell of your faithfulness? People: Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me! O Lord, be my helper!” Leader: You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, so that my soul may praise you and not be silent. All: O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever.

SECOND LESSON: Lamentations 3:22-33 22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. 27 It is good for one to bear the yoke in youth, 28 to sit alone in silence when the Lord has imposed it, 29 to put one’s mouth to the dust (there may yet be hope), 30 to give one’s cheek to the smiter, and be filled with insults. 31 For the Lord will not reject forever. 32 Although he causes grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; 33 for he does not willingly afflict or grieve anyone.

This is the Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God!

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: FROM A BRIEF STATEMENT OF FAITH (Unison)

We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created

the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image, male and female, of

every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide

from our Creator. Ignoring God’s commandments, we violate the image of God in

others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten

death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God’s condemnation. Yet God

acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER (Unison)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

OFFERING Thank you for your continued faithful stewardship to WPC. OFFERTORY Lost in the Night Haugen

Lost in the night do the people yet languish Longing for morning the darkness to vanquish, Plaintively heaving a sigh full of anguish, Will not day come soon? Will not day come soon?

(Offertory continues on the next page.)

Page 8: WILLIAMSBURG PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SIXTH SUNDAY …...Norman Elton, Organist and Assistant Director of Music Chancel Choir SHARING FAITH WITH CHILDREN John E. Morgan AUDIO AND VIDEO

Must we be vainly awaiting the morrow? Shall those who have light no light let us borrow, Giving no heed to our burden of sorrow? Will you help us soon? Will you help us soon?

Sorrowing wand’rers, in darkness yet dwelling, Dawned has the day of a radiance excelling, Death’s dreaded darkness forever dispelling. Christ is coming soon! Christ is coming soon!

Will not day come soon, come and save us soon. Christ is coming soon.
