Great Work This week I would like to congratulate Alana N who recently won the Darebin City Council’s writing award. This was a writing competition open to all students and schools in the City of Darebin. For her great effort she received a certificate from the Mayor and a $50 book voucher. Well done Alana. I would also like to congratu-late Zach C for a terrific persuasive writing piece on why the grade three and four students should be allowed to use the new synthetic grass area. Student Reports. First Semester student reports are currently being finalised and will be sent home on Friday 20
th June. Please discuss the report with your child before attending the
student led conference on Wednesday 25th June.
Student Led conference Student led conferences will be held on Wednesday 25
th June. This will be an op-
portunity for the students to show you their work, talk to you about their learning and to set goals for the second half of the year. Students will not be required to attend school on this day except for their interview time. Prep enrolments Prep enrolments for 2015 are now being taken, if you have a child or know of a child starting school in 2015 and they are interested in coming to William Ruthven Primary School they should contact the office and collect the necessary enrolment forms and brochures. If you have any queries or any questions about sending your child to William Ruthven PS in 2015 please feel free to contact me either by phone, email or by arranging an appointment. Bunnings BBQ Early next term we will be hosting a BBQ at Bunnings , Thomastown. This is a wonderful opportunity to raise some much needed money for the school and to pro-mote the school. The money raised will go towards the purchase of new computers for the students. For this to be a great success we are calling on volunteers to man the BBQ for 1-2 hours only. A note asking for your assistance will be sent home shortly. End of term arrangements Term two will conclude on Friday 27
th June at 2:00pm with a school assembly.
Term three will commence on Tuesday 15th
July. There will be no school for students on Monday 14
th July as this is a student free day. There will be no
teachers at school on this day. Could parents please make arrangements to pick up their children at 2:00pm on Friday 27

Student Led Conferences
William Ruthven Primary School has been conducting Student-Led Conferences over the last few
years. On Wednesday 25th June you will again be given the exciting opportunity to attend
Student-Led Conferences.
What are Student-Led Conferences?
Student-Led Conferences are an integral part of our reporting and are linked in with our mid-year
reporting processes. They differ from the teacher-directed parent teacher interviews, as the
student is actively involved in the learning and the reporting process. Student-Led Conferences
take the form of a conversation between the student, their parents and their teacher, allowing
students to demonstrate their individual growth and any particular achievements that they are
proud of.
Why do we run Student-Led Conferences?
Both the Student Portfolios and Student Led Conferences promote:
i) Benefits for Students
(a) Accountability for their learning
(b) Students learn to evaluate their own progress
(c) Students gain greater commitment to schoolwork and learning
(d) Builds self-confidence and self esteem
(e) Encourages student/parent communication
(f) Builds communication and critical thinking skills
(g) Places responsibility on the student and parent
(h) Allows students to become actively involved in their learning
ii) Benefits for Parents
(a) Increases the amount of information given to the parents
(b) Learn more about their child’s learning and skills
(c) An opportunity to help their child set positive goals
What if I want a one on one parent-teacher interview?
Some parents feel that they are disadvantaged by Student-Led Conferences as they are not
given the opportunity to discuss their child’s achievements, behaviour and social issues directly
and privately with their teacher. We strongly encourage parents to make an appointment to
discuss these issues directly with their teacher at any stage during the year.
Thank you for your cooperation Staff at William Ruthven Primary School.
STUDENT LED CONFERENCES Wednesday June 25th
10am to 7.30pm
This year our school is taking action to become more environmentally sustainable through a Victorian Government initiative called ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic. ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic is a program that helps our school embed sustainability in every-thing we do. We are aiming to reduce our resource use (like electricity and water) plus sup-port indigenous plants and animals. This will also hopefully help us save money. We also want to involve students, families and other members of our school and local community. We welcome your support on a Thursday at 2:00pm. In 2014, we are receiving funded support from Sustainability Victoria and DEECD. We are working with Carolyn Shurey from ‘CERES Environment Park’ and Mark Smith, from ‘Planet Savers’, on the actions of the Energy Module and start some action on the Biodiver-sity Module / Waste Module / Water Module. We completed the Core Module last with the help of Mr. Saunders, who still voluntarily helps out on Thursdays. This year, we are aiming to… create a strong foundation for our sustainability program, con-tinue to build on our sustainability achievements, monitor our resource use by using a free website called ResourceSmart Online, improve our gardens, improve our energy/waste/water systems, get our community involved, participate in exciting events, supporting our students, including sustainability in our curriculum. We can’t wait to… share our achievements with you, see our gardens grow, reduce our school’s impact, help make the Earth a better place for all, contribute to a sustainable future for all. Read more about ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic at www.resourcesmartschools.vic.gov.au/about/. (AuSSI is a national program and stands for the Australian Sustainable Schools Initi-ative). The W.R.P.S. SCHOOL PHOTO DAY
TUESDAY 17TH JUNE
ALL STUDENTS MUST WEAR FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM
Staff car park The staff car park is strictly for staff use only. We have an ongoing situation where parents are using the staff car park to pick up and drop off their children. This is highly unsafe and potentially could cause an acci-dent. We urge all parents not to use the staff car park as a pick up and drop off zone and not to block the en-trance of the car park. We ask all parents to demonstrate our school value of RESPECT in this matter.
Student morning drop offs
Just a reminder that staff do not go on duty to supervise students in the morning until 8:45am. Some parents are dropping their children off at school very early with no staff out to supervise them. If you are interested in before school care, please contact the office.
Curriculum Day Monday 14th July
(First day of Term 3)
This is a student free day
Toys brought to school Students have been bringing some expensive electronic toys to school. The school will not be reasonable if these toys get broken or lost. These toys include Furby toys. These Furby toys are an electronic robotic toy. They are quite noisy and very distracting when in the classroom. Furby toys are not to be brought to school. Any student found to bring these toys to school will have it confiscated and the parents will be called to come and collect it from the office.
