FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS…..

OK, maybe it's not quite that bad, but the teachers who are sick at home at least feel

that they've been hit by a truck. Yesterday and today, we had three teachers at home

sick with the flu. Thankfully(!) I've already had it, so everyone can cough all over me.

We are grateful to the substitute teachers who filled in the gaps, including Mrs.

Heather Dykstra, Miss Julia Byl, Mrs. Michelle Faber (four days this week!) and Mr.

Heres Snijder.

On to a different kind of bell...

Our new late sign-in system has been working well. One potential area of confusion is the

difference between the first and second bells. The school day officially begins when the first

bell rings at 8:40 am. The second bell is a holdover from the days when students were in the

habit of loitering on the playground until their teachers went and rounded them up. Because

this is no longer a problem, we will be eliminating this bell. Thanks to the parent that suggested this.

OPEN HOUSE 2016

Thanks to all parents and grandparents (and anyone else!) who attended our annual Open House. As

always, the spelling bee, badminton game, and open classrooms were enjoyed by all. Congratulations to

Nathan Souman for winning the spelling bee and to Jenovique Kalombo for winning the badminton

match.

FEBRUARY 1ST ASSEMBLY

At our regular Monday morning assembly on Feb 1, we will have a special guest. Chantel

Vanderveen will be talking to the students about her work as a Bible translator. As always,

parents are welcome to attend.

FIRST KINDERGARTEN FRIDAY A reminder that starting on February 12th, Kindergarten students will be coming to school on Fridays as

well.

SPELLING BEE Congratulations to Nathan Souman, who won our in-school spelling bee on Wednesday. He, along with

seven others from WOCS, will be competing in the tri-school bee with students

from John Calvin and Cornerstone on Friday, February 19th in the Cloverdale Church

at 10:00am. Our other contestants will be: Lydia Gunnink, Adam Grim, Joshua

Souman, Ezra Vandergugten, and Rachel Craddock. Four others are tied for the last

two spots (Becky Lodder, Kaitlyn Smith, Matthew Faber, Anna Leguijt) and will be

decided upon early next week. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to attend this event.

SPLITZ GYMNASTICS During the month of February students of grades K - 5 will be enjoying gymnastic instruction at the

facility of Splitz Gymnastic Centre Ltd.

Students will walk to the centre (leaving the school approximately 30 minutes prior to scheduled class).

However, if it is pouring rain we would appreciate parents who would be willing to drop by the school

and transport our primary students.

Gymnastic instruction schedule: Wednesdays – Feb. 3, 10, 17 & 24.

11:15 – 12:15 Grade 2/3

12:15 – 1:15 Grade 4/5

1:15 – 2:15 Grade K/1

Students will wear their P.E. strip (under their regular clothing for their walk to the centre) and bare

feet. (K/1 students will need to bring a pair of shorts and t-shirt for these sessions).

Long hair is to be tied back, no jewellery and no gum.

VANCOUVER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The Grade 1-3 students have been scheduled for a field trip, travelling by bus, on

February 11th, to the Vancouver Orpheum to attend a special concert by the

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra called “Magnificent Melodies.”

We will be going to a concert hall, so please have your child dress appropriately.

Marina Hockin, Esther Vandergugten, and Colleen Schouten will accompany us on this

trip as parent chaperones. We will be leaving the school at approximately 10:30am

and returning at 2:15pm.

CURLING Thanks to Orange Aid, the grade 6/7 class is going curling. They will be walking to the Cloverdale Curling

Rink February 15, 22 and 29, to learn the basics of curling from 1 - 2 pm.

It is recommended students wear stretchy pants (jeans not recommended) and

bring a pair of mitts or gloves. They must also bring a clean pair of running shoes to

wear on the ice.

They have requested an extra adult to accompany us (in spite of the stellar behaviour of our students

last year). If any parent is interested in coming along for any or all of these sessions, please let me know.
