The oldest known pocket knife dates to around 600–500 BC, discovered in Hallstatt, Austria. It was composed of a single blade and a bone handle.

In the 18th century, the French had developed the popular butterfly knife, and the Italians invented the switchblade “stiletto,” which featured a spring-loaded blade opened by pushing a button.

By the 17th century, pocket knives began to resemble those we see today. They incorporated back springs that keep them in the open position.

By the 1st century, Romans had adopted folding knives which were held open manually and stayed closed due to friction.

There are many different kinds of pocket knives, but three stand out as the most popular.

• SINGLE-BLADE KNIVES contain one blade. These blades are typically larger than double-blade or multi-tool knife blades, and they are often sturdier and capable of handling more strenuous work.

• MULTI-BLADE KNIVES have two or more blades. The blades may have different types of edges and points for different usages, but may not be as sturdy as single-blade knives.

• MULTI-TOOL KNIVES feature an array of tools such as saws, toothpicks, tweezers, can openers, screwdrivers, and corkscrews as well as blades.

Pocket knives come in handy in many, many ways. One of the most common is to open things, such as boxes, packaging and blister packs, letters, bags of charcoal or pet food, etc.

Pocket knives also have a variety of uses that might not be that obvious. They can be used to cut tags off clothes. They can remove nails, add holes to your belt, even tighten or remove screws – especially the tiny screws in eyeglass frames. You can also use them to cut or strip wire.

Pocket knives can be used for first aid. For example, you might need to cut cloth for a tourniquet or bandage.

Even for situations that aren’t classified as first aid, pocket knives can come in handy – removing a hangnail or a splinter, for example. Just make sure to sterilize the blade with rubbing alcohol or a flame before use.

They can also come in handy while camping. Use your pocket knife to whittle down sticks for roasting hot dogs, or shave the bark or wet parts off of kindling to help start a fire.

And they’re essential when it comes to fishing, whether it’s cutting fishing line or removing hooks.

Pocket knives can save someone’s life – including your own. Although they’re not necessarily meant to be used as weapons, they could fend off an attacker and allow you to escape a dangerous situation.

They can also be used in life-or-death situations, such as cutting someone free from a seatbelt after an automobile accident. Or, you might come across an animal that’s trapped in a tangle of wires or cord; a pocket knife could save that animal’s life.
