William Cruz I have developed my artistic work in different fields such as sculpture, printmaking, drawing and painting; I strongly believe that art should be a balance between conceptual and well-crafted work. As I did my major in sculpture, I am really interested in having the opportunity to study painting more closely, not only to develop my own work which during the last years has been basically bi-dimensional, but to share with my students, because I am also an Art teacher with extensive experience teaching in areas such as drawing, painting, sculpture, composition, printmaking, art history and A.P. Studio Art. I have held management positions as well; currently I am the Visual Arts Department Head at Colegio Los Nogales, where l lead and train art teachers. Through my work, I have the goal of connecting all of my students to their artistic sensibility, while also assisting the most talented to reach as high as they possibly can. Colombian Dream

This is a series of works related to the idea of being a foreigner in Colombia and having to deal with the country’s linguistic expressions. Some works are based on words, like "bacano" which means cool, the word estranged when broken into two parts: "baca" (i.e. vaca, or cow in English) and "no", resulting in the negation of a cow. Or, expressions like "ser abeja", which means cleverness, literally translates into English as bee-like. Sometimes these works are not only about Colombian idioms, but word games in general. The two lines appearing at the bottom of each work are done with passport or visa codes in mind (i.e. the alphanumeric sequence on the bottom of a passport or visa’s first page).

Me embiste la Tecnología

"Me embiste la tecnología" is an expression used in Colombia by people who find computers difficult and challenging to use, or by those who consider computer usage a generational issue. For much of this work, several Microsoft Windows commands highlight different situations in people’s lives. For example, the command “Ctrl+Z” is used to undo an action; the art uses this command in conjunction with a nude painted by Colombian artist Fernando Botero, including body marks to reference liposuction illustrating a desire to lose (i.e. undo) fat fast.
