Club Awards Adam Mouttet Rising Star – Lachlan Katic

Lachlan Katic joined Willetton in 2019 as a first-year colt and showed what a quality footballer he is. Lachlan starred early on in the Colts side before being promoted (and doubling up on occasions) to play in the League side in the back half of the year playing 6 games.

To finish 5th in the Colts Best & Fairest and also be named a Vice-Captain of the Colts side in 2019 is an impressive achievement.

The Willetton Football Club congratulates Lachlan for winning the Adam Mouttet Rising Star Award.

Golden Boot – Leighton Douglas

Leighton Douglas has won the Golden Boot for 2019. This is the third time he has taken out this award following his wins in 2015 & 2016.

Leighton has been a constant fixture in the forward line since debuting for the Willetton Football Club and has showcased his forward craft throughout.

The Willetton Football Club congratulates Leighton for being the leading goal kicker in 2019.

Jim Grace Clubman Award – Michael “The Penguin” Gotti

“The Penguin” has been a wonderful contributor the Willetton Football Club in 2019. He has worked tirelessly as the Approved Bar Manager, Coaching the Thirds side, organising all the paperwork for the club (Games Played, Vote Counts & goal kickers) as well as running around on the field getting a kick with the rest of us.

He has always been the first man to arrive and the last man to leave the club this year and has practically spent every 2nd Saturday around the club to make it a better place to be.

Other nominations for this award included Glenn Palmer, Brendan Waswo, Nat Broomfield, Gary Beange and Keilan Marshall.

The Willetton Football Club congratulates “The Penguin” for his efforts not just in 2019 but for all his service in past years as well.

Presidents Report Perry Kleppe

2019 has been a challenging year at Willetton Football Club. The promotion to “B” grade was accompanied by the loss of a number of our senior players from 2018 and a brand new committee of management so both on and off the field the club started the year on the back foot and under a great deal of pressure, however, as the year unfolded both the committee and the player group gained traction and the results improved dramatically.

While our league did struggle the depth of the club was shown through the success of the reserves team which made it all the way the grand final but just fell short on the day. This aside I think the Perth Football League was surprised at how well the team did go this year.

The colts had a similar year to league, struggling at the start of the year but showing great improvement throughout to a strong finish. This team is a credit to themselves and the coach Ian Ashenhurst and has punched well above their weight with a team much younger and undersized to the opposition they faced each weak.

The Integrated team has had a stellar year characterised by Tyson Worthington, Tyler RJ Gould, Geoff Stewart and Trent Fleming being selected in the West Australian team to compete in the national carnival and Tyson Worthington making All Australian team selection as a result. In only our 3rd season in the integrated competition the team qualified for the grand final, going down to 5-time winners Coolbinia

Our 3rds, what can we say, without them this year very little would have been done around the club. They make up the lion’s share of the committee and are more often the 1st to arrive and last to leave on game day. Special mention to Jason Walker (Walks) and Jeremy Bruse on celebrating their 300th games for the club this year.

A further mention to Raymond Reveley (250 games), Brad Hill (200 games), Adam Doig (200 games) for playing big milestone matches this year and to Sean Halton and Joshua Coleman for playing 150 games.

A further congratulations to Brendan Gotti on achieving life membership.

PAST PLAYERS

Our success’s around our Past Players pretty much mirrored the overall performance of the club. Not so great at the 1st part of the season but finished with a bang in round 16 against the old foe Maddington with Willo victorious on a wet day by 32 points. Apologies to Past Players for the shoddy effort around organising an event earlier in the year but I’m sure you all agree we made up for it with the next effort, they do say footy is all about the 2nd effort.

Your club will be reaching out to you in 2020 with the plan to be a lot more inclusive of our heritage and history and seeking to align with our past players a lot closer and have them provide support to further develop our club culturally and financially. It would be great to see a few of the old boys around the club a bit more often than just past players day

WOMENS COMP

In 2020 we will be fielding women’s teams in the Perth Football League competition. Perhaps a bit slow off the mark with this initiative but it’s a great move for the club and we do look forward to seeing a lot more ladies around the place in 2020. Spread the word.

SPONSORS

A club cannot survive without money to fund its various expenses. Canteen and bar sales don’t generate sufficient to maintain a successful amateur football so a significant thankyou to all our sponsors large and small for the support they have given us in 2019 and we look forward to your continued support in 2020.

ON FIELD

Thank you to our coaching personnel, Lance Lennon, Rob Brown and Ray Crocker with our League Team, David Moyes as the Captain, Playing Coach for reserves, supported by Dwayne Green, Ian Ashenhurst with the colts and his extra efforts in spreading the word throughout the district and developing these young boys throughout the year, supported by Mike Hanney as Manager.

To Keilan Marshall for his role as the integrated coach supported by a number of parents of players and Matt Steacy when Keilan wasn’t available. A stellar job Keilan and our most successful team for 2019.

Up on the hill at every home game without fail we have Billy Jones manning the score board for the colts game and then swinging over to run the BBQ, your efforts are very much appreciated. Gary Beange for ensuring that the oval was marked up for play prior to every home game throughout the season, great effort Gary, also has been a great help around the place to run errands, arrange for the 2019 merchandise and attends every training session, including Monday night Colts to offer his support and mentoring

Last but at least, to the loyal band of supporters who follow the team around to every game, your club is very grateful for the strong support provided this year. I’m pretty confident that Willetton had a stronger away supporter base than any club who came to visit us.

CLUB COMMITTEE

A tough gig being on the committee in 2019 but to the executive, after a slow start what a strong finish, well done team. Thanks to Jason Walker; Josh Edwards and a special mention to Raymond Reveley our secretary, perhaps the toughest of all roles on the executive that wasn’t made any easier with the arrival of his 1st child at the start of the season.

To Michael Gotti (Penguin) who single headedly ran the clubs bar for most of the season. Penguin was always 1st to arrive and invariably last to leave on a Saturday and gave his weekends to the Willetton Football Club, a great club man.

To Rod Philp for coming out of retirement as a former Willetton Responsible Manager in our bar and give some well needed respite to Penguin.

Glen Palmer, not only offering financial support to the club but every Thursday evening for his efforts in the kitchen to supply and prepare meals for the squad after training on team selection night. A massive undertaking every Thursday evening Glen and a thank you also to your regular helpers.

Others worthy of a mention include Nat Broomfield and his wife Natasha. Tash took it upon herself to get the canteen up running this year with support later coming from Tania Kleppe & Annette Kennedy, thank all very much ladies, perhaps the early makings of our Ladies Auxiliary for the future Then there is a list of other general committee members and volunteers, Tom Verjans representing the integrated team, Tom Hanney (the Colts), Leighton Douglas, Keilan Marshall, Jeremy Perhavec & Mark Windsor

CITY OF CANNING

This year has seen the club building a more consultative and co-operative relationship with our local council and the councillor for the Ward where the club is located. A learning experience for all parties but it has shown that communication between the two needs to be ongoing, face to face and reflect how the club can and does benefit the community.

League Report Lance Lennen

10th – 2 Wins, 16 Losses, 66 Players Used

As last year runners up in the C1 Grand Final being promoted to B Grade promised much for the young team but delivered little by way of more new players and better results. The preparation of the team by way of an early commitment from the playing group to an early pre- season and a fit squad did not materialise. The year 2019 could be remembered for what might have been rather what was. The first game of the season was perhaps an accurate indicator of the season ahead, up against the ultimate premiers Wesley Curtin delivering a disappointing 100-point loss.

Despite this performance the team did show glimpses throughout the season of what they are capable of with honourable losses to good teams including the return match against the unbeaten Wesley Curtin after leading all day yielding a marginal loss of 9 points within the last 2 minutes of the game.

All too often the losses this year were not because of being outclassed as a team, or of significant beltings, but came because of one poor quarter of football having showed for three quarters that the team could compete against the best teams, but unfortunately not show the self-belief or composure to hold on in the critical last few minutes to close out the often well-deserved win when it counted.

This is a typical signature pattern of a side full of youth with genuine good prospects for a great future. The team had many individuals stand out players who showed that they are indeed quite capable of matching it a B grade level. Those who week in and week out always held their heads up high and were never outclassed. The young leaders showed courage and commitment enough to indicate that they will be better for the tough year that it was.

Unfortunately, the many injuries in 2019 took its toll, with 66 individuals being selected through the season, leaving a sense of an inconsistent overall team. With two wins from eighteen games the year did not deliver what Willetton was hoping for. However, the 2020 season beckons as an opportunity to regroup with a more experienced and hardened young squad to take on the best from C1 again.

Reserves Report David Myors

After 18 Rounds - 3rd - 12 Wins, 6 Losses, 81 Players Used

2019 B-Grade Runner Up

It is hard to judge whether your team has had a successful season or not, especially after losing a Grand Final by 48 points. However, after a couple of days to reflect and clear my mind there were many positives to come out of the Reserves 2019 season. It was a mixed start to the season with a 10 goal loss to eventual premiers Curtin Wesley to kick it off, however the boys rallied after that loss and some hard fought wins along with some close losses saw us get to round 11 with 6 wins, losses and sitting in 5th spot on the ladder.

With a cluster of teams around us with similar points we were in striking distance of finishing top 3 but also a chance of finishing in the bottom 3. From this point on we seemed to click up a gear and we finished the season with a flurry winning 6 games straight before eventually losing the last game of the year to West Coast which was a dead rubber as we had already secured 3rd spot and would play them in the first week of finals regardless.

We went into finals and knew we would have to beat the only 2 teams we hadn’t beaten all year if we wanted to progress. In week 1 we started our finals campaign off in style at Claremont Showgrounds, knocking off one of those teams West Coast Cowan by 15 points. We continued that good form the following week going straight through to the Grand Final by beating Curtin Wesley by 17 points, giving them their first defeat of the year.

Unfortunately, is wasn’t to be our day a fortnight later when we would run into Curtin Wesley again and go down by 8 goals in a game many people would consider one of our worst performances of the year.

As mentioned before though there were still many positives to come out of the season. It was a year where through the course of the season 81 players took the field for the Reserves team, including some boys who had played majority of their football in the Thirds and over a dozen colts, all of whom contributed and applied themselves well to the higher level of football. A special mention to Ian Ashenhurst who was one of my biggest supporters throughout the year and was always willing to push and encourage the colts to step up and play another game.

I think the experience that some of these young men have had will be invaluable to them moving forward into more senior football. We were also able to re-engage some older players to the club, some on a more part-time or one-off basis, others like Nathan Cocks, David Philp and Damon Bull who came out of retirement to play key roles throughout the season and finals for us. It was great to have the experience of these guys to help with some of the development of younger players.

A big thanks also goes out to my Senior Assistant Coach Dwayne Green who, when I took the role of coach at the 11th hour was happy to come on board and help. He was a massive help with training, game day, selections and was a terrific sounding board for me through the year. Brad Nicholas was also

a terrific help this year after giving in to his injuries he was a great help with coaching along with Josh Harder who managed for the whole season and Callum Tuckwell who ran for me. To all the players who played Reserves this year you should be proud of your achievements and despite not getting the desired result on September 14 I think you can all hold your heads high for your efforts.

Colts Report Ian Ashenhurst

9th – 2 Wins, 16 Losses, 29.59%, 34 Players Used

2019 has been a challenging season for the Colts on many fronts but despite our final ladder position I am very proud of what this team has accomplished this season. There has been a great camaraderie amongst the group and the boys have stuck together and improved as a team throughout the year. Watching the team grow and individuals develop for their transition to Senior football is a true measure of a successful Colts program.

Promotion to the Drew Banfield competition this season proved to be a tough transition for the team. We were up against some quality teams including the top 4 teams that dominated the competition and while we were competitive against most of the other teams, we were unable to consistently put it together for four quarters.

Our playing group changed considerably this season with only 10 players returning from last year’s Colts team and 24 new players joining the squad. To their credit the boys bonded really well but it did take time for the team to gel as a playing group with the introduction of so many new players. Although our numbers looked good with a squad of 34 registered players a combination of injuries, selection with WAFL Colts and juggling other commitments made it difficult for us to field a consistent playing group each week.

Our leadership group in the team has been a tremendous support to me this season. To our Captain Tom Hanney and Vice Captains Lachlan Katic & Bailey Hitchcock, thanks for the environment that you have helped to create within the group and the way that you have led from the front this season.

A positive sign for the future is the number of Colts players who made their debut with the League team this season; congratulations to Bailey Tucek, Ben T Wardle, Conor McPartland and Lachlan Katic on this achievement.

An enormous effort goes on behind the scenes to organise the team each week. Thanks to our Team Manager Mike Hanney for the work that he has put in to make sure that everything runs smoothly on game day and for his sense of humour throughout the year. Thanks also to Ray Pratley and Matt Steacy for stepping up while Mike was away on holidays.

There are so many roles and activities required to run a game of football each week and I am grateful to those who regularly volunteered to help out; Brendan Waswo for assisting me on the bench with the interchanges and Brayden & Connor Heywood for Goal Umpiring.

Thanks also to the Committee for your hard work behind the scenes. Special mentions to Raymond Reveley for putting up with my last-minute calls for transfers or permits and Michael Gotti for organizing the paperwork each week and helping us to set up the ground on home games.

The game day support for the team has been fantastic throughout this season. To the Senior players, parents and friends that regularly turned up to our games thank you for the positive game day environment that you created. It was great to hear you encouraging the team from the sidelines.

Finally, it has been an absolute pleasure to coach this team. I have really enjoyed watching the team develop and hope the boys have enjoyed the season as much as I have enjoyed coaching them. I look forward to seeing you back playing Colts or Senior football with the Blues next year.

Integrated Report Keilan Marshall

After 18 Rounds - 3rd – 10 Wins, 3 Losses

2019 Integrated Runner-Up

2019 saw the Willetton Football Club’s Integrated Team achieve its best season to date. I have been lucky enough to be involved with the Integrated Team since its inaugural season two years ago, and this year has by far seen the greatest development in the playing group. The team grew in numbers during the off season (thanks mainly to skipper Geoff Stewart acting as the teams number one recruiter during the off-season) to twenty one players.

The team played outstanding team first football all year, adopting the team motto of ‘run and carry’ and ‘support your team mates’. This approach saw the team making it all the way to the Grand Final come seasons end. Although the ‘good guys’ went down in a competitive effort on the day, being able to make a Grand Final in a team’s second year of competition is something that all the players should be immensely proud of being a part of.

This year saw four representatives make the Western Australia State Team, Geoff ’Tractor' Stewart, Tyler ’Silk' Gould, Trent ‘The Enforcer’ Fleming and Tyson ’Silent Assassin’ Worthington. The lads travelled to Blacktown in Sydney to tackle the other state teams. WA finished 5th overall in a tough competition.

Special acknowledgment to Tyson Worthington who was also selected as an All Australian player for his efforts throughout the State competition. Great effort lads!

A personal highlight this year was handing mighty Coolbinia their one and only loss of the season. The team took on the four-time reigning champs at a Curtain Raiser match at Steel Blue Oval in front of a massive crowd. Their attacking style of run and gun football saw the mighty Blues come from behind to record a historic 3-point win! The team was given the nickname ‘The Giant Killers’ from this point on in the season, a well-deserved name after their massive victory. It’s fair to say coach Killa was very nervous during the dying minutes of the game.

Integrated Football is a massive juggling act. I am fortunate enough to have a lot of support and backing from several parties. I would like to thank all those involved for their enormous support and assistance this year. Thank you to the Perth Football League, Hayden Marchetto, Willetton Football Club, the Committee and the Swan Districts Football Club for helping drive this great initiative. Thank you to the team’s major sponsors Community TAB and Life Without Barriers for the generous contributions. Thank you to all the parents, guardians and carers who continually provide players transport and assist with training and game day duties.

Finally, thank you to all the players who pulled on a Willetton Blues football jumper for the Integrated team this season. It’s very rewarding to coach a group of players who are enthusiastic and keen be a

part of this great football club. I hope everyone involved enjoyed themselves as much as I did this season.

Be sure to pull on the boots next year! Keep that Big Blue Bus rolling!

Thirds Report Michael “The Penguin” Gotti

9th – 4 Wins, 14 Losses

Well looks like it’s a “PengPression”

After the efforts of last year, the boys were raring to give E2 a red-hot dip. Losing 3 of our regular midfielders from our squad was going to be tough. However, with John 2.0 leading the squad with Nat and Kenny by his side we thought we were destined for big things.

Unfortunately for us things didn’t play out how we would have liked finishing the season with a 4 - 14 record. At least 5 of those games we lost when we were leading at the main break but could not hold onto our lead. However, with one team clubs like ECU and Forrestfield (eventual premiers) it was always a tough ask to compete with them.

Nevertheless, there were lots of positives to come from this year’s efforts. Cam Peck brought down the better Peck who showed he was just as good with a footy as well as a red can. The Pope has claimed the cage from his stalwart compatriots 300 game vet Jeremy Bruse and chip fryer extraordinaire David Tognolini. There were also solid contributions made by a handful of new faces such as Trystan, Beau, Forbes, Luke, Brandon and club physio/ waterboy/ goal umpire/ player Liam “Penno” Pennington.

A big Congratulations to Lachlan Perhavec for taking out this year best and fairest award. You have worked hard this year and deserve this year’s honours. I would also like to congratulate and farewell our runner up Will Collins. You were a big part of our side’s success over the last two years and we will miss you. All the best and safe travels back to land of potatoes.

I would like to thank Walkernui, Revs, Johnny, Natto and Kenny for all their help and support this year. A big thanks to Waswo, Gary and Isaac for always being their ready to help run water, wave a goal flag or run boundary. Finally, thanks to the committee for giving me this opportunity to coach a great bunch of blokes. It is great to be able to play this great game, however it is even better to play it with the best bunch of blokes in the comp.

Let’s hope the Penguin recovers from this year’s amateur football crisis and leads the Thirds team to victory in 2020.

Cheers Michael “The Penguin” Gotti
