Wilder on the Taylor - Project Healing Waters

Project Healing Waters was brought to the attention of Pikes Peak Flyfishers Club by R P Van Gytenbeek , then CEO of FFF at one of the Fly Fishing Shows in 2006, a couple of years after the birth of the Program was initiated by Ed Nicholson ,a retired Navy Captain, at Walter Reed Army Hospital. The interest in the program was reinforced in 2007 when SGT Dennis Cline, a left arm amputee, got transferred from Walter Reed to Fort Carson and called Gary Sphuler, then PPF club President and asked “Why is there not a PHW Program here at Fort Carson?” It took a while to break into the chain of command at the Warrior Transition Unit “ WTU “ and get recognized on Fort Carson. PPF, your club, is the original “sponsor club” and signatory to the PHWFF,Inc Memorandum of Understanding. Cheyenne Mountain Trout Unlimited joined the effort as a co-sponsor and a collaborative source of volunteer base. It was a good project for a joint effort and compatible with both clubs’ missions. In late 2007, the Project Healing Water –Fort Carson began Fly Tying Classes on Fort Carson and Fly Fishing Trips early in 2008. The Program has been very successful and has expanded until this year the totals are staggering; three 7 week sessions of Fly Tying Classes were held, 3 wounded soldiers built Fly Rods for a National PHWFF,Inc competition and 26 Fly Fishing Trips were conducted. 13 of which were “Day Trips” and 12 were “Multi-Day” Trips. The trips accommodated 222 wounded soldiers for a total of 57 days on the water; River and Stillwater. This resulted in 493 soldier/days involving great progress toward the fulfillment of our mission of “being dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and veterans through fly fishing, fly tying and outings”. This effort was supported by, in excess of, 500 mentor/days at no expense to the soldiers and vets and totally volunteer supported. Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. P. O. We know that fish live in beautiful and natural “healing places” and we have gotten feedback from our soldiers and vets that the effort is well worthwhile and serving our mission. We are blessed to operate here in Colorado, where there are so many beautiful and productive venues, so many generous hosts and benefactors as well as so many enthusiastic volunteers. Thank you all! We are not happy about the endless supply of candidates for our program and hopefully the source is on the decline, in any event we will continue to aid recovery as best we can for those to whom we owe so much for our safety and their “service to our country”.
