Privet & Poka
In October our students were treated to a wonderful cultural assembly. The Russian music, dance and song en-semble Barynya is a world-renowned
group known as the premier Russian folk ensemble. Barynya presented Russian, Cossack, Ukrainian, Jewish and Gypsy Roma traditional dancing, songs and virtuoso performances on instruments including the balalaika, gar-moshka and balalaika contrabass. Barynya has been invited to perform at some of the most prestigious cul-tural venues in the United States, including Carnegie, Hall, the National Constitution Center, Smithsonian Insti-tute, the United Nations and the Russian Embassy. Our kids were thrilled and honored to have such a group perform for them. They were even taught a few Rus-sian words: Privet means Hello and Poka means Good-bye.

Wildcat Tracks Featured Student Artists
Kamryn W. ( Kindergarten Artist) with her Scare
Crow Puppet
Kamryn liked making this project because she got to cut pieces and glue on buttons. She learned about shapes and how to make a hat. Her favorite part was making the patches. She likes coming to art because she gets to make stuff. Kamryn’s favorite art activity is painting.
Dylan D. (4 th Grade Artist) with his Elongated
Self Portrait
Dylan started off his portrait wanting to make it look like him. He gave it cool clothes and a hot background. Dylan thought it was challenging to tie-dye the background and keep the paint from running onto the skin. His favorite part about making the project was drawing the face. He calls the artwork My Portrait.
Dylan’s favorite thing about com-ing to art is doing projects, look-ing at different projects, and learning new things about art. His favorite creative activity is drawing. “I have been good at drawing since, I don’t know… like seven!” Dylan said.

The Music Corner
Alicia Reisinger, General Music Teacher
Music class is off to a great start here at Greenwood! Here are a few things we have been working on.
Kindergarten: We have been learning how to use our singing voices, and we have been introduced to percussion instruments. We love singing silly songs like “The Horse Stood Around” and “Mother Goonie Bird!”
1st Grade: We have been working on keeping a steady beat and learning about percussion instruments. We love to play the drums!
2nd Grade: We learned about instruments in the string family and have been practicing playing beats in groups of two. We have also learned about the music of Japan. We watched a really neat video with Kermit the Frog and Steve Martin playing “Deuling Banjos.”
3rd Grade: We learned about all four families of instruments and have just started to learn how to read the staff. We will be playing our recorders for the first time very soon!
4th Grade: We have been talking about steady beat, meter, and rhythm. We learned a dance to the song “Syncopated Clock” using scarves.
5th Grade: We learned to conduct in meters of 2, 3, and 4. We also been learned about the music of Mexico and about American folk music. We talked about the music of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan.
6th Grade: We have been learning about beat, meter, and rhythm. We played Boomwhackers to the song “Jamaican Farewell.”
The Elementary Singers have only had two rehearsals but things are already sounding great as we prepare for our winter concert. Ask your chorus kids about the song “Make A Buck!”
If you can, please join us on December 4 at 7:00PM in the HS Auditorium for our Elementary Choral Concert
First Graders shake hands as they sing the song "Howjidoo."
Elementary Winter Chorus Concert—
The Elementary Winter Chorus Concert will be held on Wednesday December 4 at 7PM in the high school auditorium. Student should report to the high school music room at 6:30 that evening. Students should wear “Sunday best.” No jeans or sneakers. Boys must wear a shirt with a collar. Short-sleeved shirts are fine. Please remember that it is hot under the lights so wear something light and comfortable.

Greenwood Elementary School
School-Wide Positive Behavior Support
During the 2013-14 school year, Greenwood Elementary School is excited about implement-
ing a School-Wide Positive Behavior Support initiative.
What is School-Wide Positive Behavior Support?
A team-based approach to teaching behavioral expectations and preventing problem behaviors.
Relies on research-validated practices.
Teaches and encourages respectful and responsible behavior to all students.
Uses facts and data to support decision-making.
Creates a safe and effective learning environment by reducing discipline referrals and increasing in-
struction time.
Is for ALL students and ALL staff members
Greenwood Elementary School Students Are:
Greenwood Students ROAR!!!
This motto will be used throughout the year. Students will be taught specific behavior expectations for each area of
the building as they relate to this motto. Positive behaviors will be reinforced throughout the building. As parents
we ask that you support your child, be encouraging, and model behaviors that are consistent with Greenwood Ele-
mentary School Motto.
Three Tiers of SWPBS Intervention and Support
The School-Wide Positive Behavior Support initiative follows a three-tiered model of supports. It typi-
cally takes a school 3-5 years to fully implement the program. During the 2013-14 school year, Green-
wood Elementary will focus on establishing primary supports for all students, the first tier of this initia-
tive. This will consist of:
Establishing school-wide rules and expectations
Teaching expected behaviors to all students in all settings
Developing a school-wide system for encouraging and rewarding positive behavior
Establishing smooth transitions and routines

2013-14 Peer Mediators
Conflict is a natural part of our lives.
We argue about who is going to be
first, or who is smarter in school or bet-
ter at sports. Sometimes we don’t know
how to work things out peacefully.
Sometimes we don’t work them out at
all. We end up holding a grudge or hav-
ing hard feelings. The Peer Mediation
program believes that student can help
each other resolve their own conflicts.
They can resolve them in a way that
both people are satisfied. The Peer Me-
diators will not solve their problem for
the students, but will help them talk out
their problem and find a solution.
Teachers or students may refer student
for Peer Mediation. Peer Mediators do
not handle problems dealing with physi-
cal violence, drugs, alcohol or personal
property. Talking to Peer Mediators is
the students’ choice. Everything dis-
cussed at a mediation is kept confiden-
tial. The Peer Mediator’s job is not to
solve problems for other students, but
to help other students think of ways to
solve problems for themselves.
The Peer Mediators for 213-14 are:
4th Grade: Faith Polcha and Nicolas
Rummel
5th Grade: Alyssa Barner and Landon Hall
PALS At Greenwood
The high school has started a new year for the PALS program. The high school students are volunteers and may participate in the S.O.S. and F.F.A. programs. These students will come over to the elementary to spend time with their younger Pal, playing games, talking, doing crafts, reading books, study helper, sports, etc. It is emphasized to the high school PALS, that if they volunteer for this project, they must be committed to spending time with their elementary friend. This year on December 18 there will be the annual after school Christmas party for the PALS program stu-dents. Here, high school PALS will share games, crafts and treats with their younger Pal.
The party is from 2:30-4:00 in the LGI.

Second Grade News

On October twenty-first the whole second grade went to
Brummer’s Farm. We got off the bus we played for twenty
minutes then ate lunch. After we played and ate lunch we
watched two sheep get sheared. Then we started stations.
One of them was pumpkins, another is tour another is
games. Another one was the maze the last one was picking
potatoes. The potatoes we picked we got to keep. We also
got to keep and ear of corn. Then we got all of our stuff

VETERAN’S DAY AT GREENWOOD ELEMENTARY
The students at Greenwood Elementary again honored our Veteran’s with a Veteran’s Day Assembly held
November 11. Every grade participated by singing, reading reports on Veteran’s they interviewed, creating
drawings and essays and by simply saying “Thank You” to our Veteran’s by coloring pictures to hand out
to the attending Vets. Boy scouts from our school presented the flags and Luke Gorman (9th grade)
played taps to end our celebration.
Some of the creations by third grade students for Veteran’s
Day. The pictures show what they like about our country
and the essays explain why America is what it is because
of our Veterans.
Hello to all!
We would like to raise money for the Perry
County Food Bank this holiday season to
support our community and encourage the
spirit of giving. We invite you to join us as a
school.
As we did last year, we would place a Penny
Cube in your classroom. Students may donate
any amount that they wish. We will collect
the Penny Cubes daily after the morning an-
nouncements.
Please let us know if you are participating so
that we may copy family letters and prepare
Penny Cubes for your classroom. As before, we
will place a Penny Cube in the office, too.
Thank you for your help!

1st Graders Participate in Holiday Centers!
On Tuesday, November 26th, the first grade stu-
dents enjoyed a morning of holiday centers. Mrs.
Slingerland’s Child Development and Parenting
class led many of the centers. Parent volunteers
also helped out at some of the centers.
The students had a great time creating
many arts and crafts. The centers that
the students participated in included
making ornaments for a Christmas
tree bulletin board and mak-
ing butter. The students then
sampled their butter on crack-
ers. In addition to these,
other stations included hand-
print ornaments, addition and
subtraction turkey bingo,
creamer snowmen,
snow globe plates,
popsicle stick snow-
men, and paper bag
puppets. It was an ex-
citing morning in first
grade!!!
