The Mental Health Act is a musical comedy about involuntary psychiatric treatment that explores the changes heralded by Victoria’s new Mental Health Act, 2014. The new Act puts self-‐determination and Recovery to the fore, ushering in huge cultural change for mental health services in Victoria. The Mental Health Act play addresses these issues through humour and song, looking at the politics around the formation of the new act, before and after scenes and poignant insight into the experience of those who experience compulsory treatment for mental illness. The Mental Health Act was developed by Wild at Heart Community Arts through a collaboration of artists who have experienced compulsory mental health treatment alongside members of the Mental Health Tribunal. The show is scripted and directed by well known music comedian John Chaplin-‐Fleming (Scared Weird Little Guys). The play is approximately 25 minutes in duration and can be followed by a facilitated discussion on the issues raised. Please contact Wild at Heart to enquire about booking details and fee. We would love to present the play at your organisation or event. A preview of one of the songs from the play can be viewed at http://bit.ly/1LsEugl Wild At Heart provides opportunities for people who experience disability to tell their stories through arts and music making, to belong to a creative community and to fully participate in society through their artistic work.
