Program and Process Overview

Student Employment Initiative

WiGrow was initiated by the Student Employment Initiative as part of the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration (VCFA) Strategic Plan for 2009-2014. The mission of the Office of the VCFA and its affiliated units is to provide the highest quality administrative and student-life services to enhance the University of Wisconsin-Madison experience. The Office of the VCFA and affiliated units strive for excellence in services relating to budget/finance, human resources, the physical plant, public safety, student housing, social and cultural opportunities, health, recreation, and community building. These services promote the success and well-being of student, faculty, staff, alumni, and the general public. The purpose of the Student Employment Initiative is to evaluate and intensify the impact that student employment has on the achievement of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Experience and the Essential Learning Outcomes (www.learning.wisc.edu/welo2010.pdf). The three areas of concentration are: collaboration and teamwork, independence and responsibility, and leadership and practical skills.

Audience The audience for the WiGrow Program is the UW-Madison VCFA and the Division of Student Life (DSL) units. Units in VCFA that participated in the WiGrow Program in 2014-2015 include: Administrative and Information Management Services (AIMS), Business Services, Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M), Office of Human Resources & Office of Human Resource Development (Talent Management), Recreational Sports, Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP), State Lab of Hygiene, University Health Services (UHS), University Housing, and the Wisconsin Union. The Division of Student Life, which is outside of VCFA, also participated. Participating DSL departments include: Multicultural Student Center, International Student Services, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Campus Center, McBurney Disability Resource Center, Associated Students of Madison, Dean of Students Office, Center for Leadership and Involvement, and the Center for First Year Experience. Eligible units for participation in the program were units with student employees enrolled as undergraduate or graduate at UW-Madison. Student supervisors and their student employees were the main participants of the program with administrative representatives in each unit overseeing the execution of the program.

Learning Outcomes

Make student employment on campus a high-impact practice through intentional interaction and reflection.

Encourage collaboration across VCFA and DoSL units.

Recommendations

Consider expansion of the WiGrow program into other campus schools, colleges, and divisions that are interested in the program.

Hold two student employee retreats and one supervisor event in the 2015-2016 academic year. Use results from impending supervisor survey to evaluate program timeline and implementation

concerns. Use qualitative data collected from the end of year student survey to alter unit-specific

implementation of WiGrow.
