Everyone went WILD when Miss Riley introduced us to the new class pet because we’d NEVER had a class pet before and also because it was a

HAMSTER.

4

EVERYONE wanted to choose the hamster’s name and Anne-Marie Moor wouldn’t stop shouting

“PRINCESS HAIRY FACE! PRINCESS

HAIRY FACE!”

over and over.

5

Miss Riley told us that everyone was allowed to put ONE name in the “Hamster Name Suggestion Box”.

6

Everyone crossed their fingers and legs for luck when Miss Riley reached into the box and pulled out a name.

7

But when she read the name she looked a bit cross. And then she said, “Anne-Marie, how many suggestions did you put into the suggestion box?” But Anne-Marie wouldn’t answer, and we knew it was because she’d probably put loads in.

8

So Miss Riley pulled out another name and it was “RAVIOLI”.

Miss Riley sighed and everyone cheered because we LOVED the name!

9

We learned all about hamsters and how to take care of them RESPONSIBLY. Miss Riley took Ravioli out of his cage and showed us how to pick him up and hold him without squeezing his little hamster bones.

10

Miss Riley said that every day a different person would be in charge of looking after Ravioli and that’s when EVERYONE started screaming, “Me! Miss!

PLEASE! PICK ME!

ME!”

But Miss Riley picked Megan McNally, and when Sunita Ram asked why, Miss Riley said that it was because Megan hadn’t shouted like everyone else had and that part of taking care of Ravioli meant not frightening him.

12

All day, every time Ravioli squeaked, Megan jumped up RIGHT AWAY and gave him a sunflower seed. She even did it when she was in the middle of an argument with Sunita Ram about who broke the “Non-Shatter” ruler!

Then after lunch Megan started being WEIRDLY NICE to everyone. She let David Barry AND Bobby Henderson use her colouring pens even though she usually doesn’t let ANYONE touch them, not even Miss Riley.

The next day, Theo Burke was in charge of Ravioli and he kept jumping up and giving Ravioli a sunflower seed every time he squeaked, just like Megan had. And then HE started being WEIRDLY NICE to everyone too! He even washed Sunita’s paint pots even though she didn’t ask him to.

That’s when I noticed that Ravioli was giving people THE EYE. He would run up to the side of his cage when someone came near and then

FREEZE ON THE SPOT

and STARE at them with wide eyes

for AGES.

Susie Keys must have noticed it too because she threw a scrunched-up piece of paper on to our desk which said:

DON’T LOOK INTO RAVIOLI’S

EYES!
