Case Study WiFi Offload The Challenge Targeted WiFi offload has become a key part of a Tier 1 Mobile Operator’s data offload strategy. In order to prioritize deployments in locations where they would deliver both the best improvement in customer experience and the best business returns, they turned to the Viavi Solutions™ ariesoGEO to provide detailed intelligence on the precise location of data hotspots within their network. Using Location Intelligence For a candidate location to deliver both the required customer experience and business return goals for the operator, it needs to have three key characteristics: 1. High data traffic: The locations with the highest total downlink volume rank highly. 2. High number of HSDPA sessions: HSDPA sessions are typical of the type of device and user activity that lends itself most readily to WiFi offload. 3. High number of unique users: With a clear goal to maximize the impact on customer experience, target locations need to have a large number of unique users, maximizing the number of customers who would benefit. By analyzing data from every connection 24/7 and geolocating down to building level accuracy, ariesoGEO provides unprecedented insight into any one of these selection criteria. Other operators, faced with similar challenges, have also used additional parameters such as device type or time windows to further refine the selection of candidate locations. Its powerful filtering capabilities allow the user to select as many filter criteria as required, with complete flexibility to define the target characteristics to suit the operator’s business goals.

Case Study

WiFi Offload

The Challenge Targeted WiFi offload has become a key part of a Tier 1 Mobile Operator’s data offload strategy. In order to prioritize deployments in locations where they would deliver both the best improvement in customer experience and the best business returns, they turned to the Viavi Solutions™ ariesoGEO to provide detailed intelligence on the precise location of data hotspots within their network.

Using Location IntelligenceFor a candidate location to deliver both the required customer experience and business return goals for the operator, it needs to have three key characteristics:

Unprecedented InsightEach of the characteristics were individually mapped, and each revealed several for focus; however, as shown in Figure 1, each of these identified quite a broad area. ariesoGEO gives the user complete control to combine the individual layers of filtered data using mathematical equations, giving specific weight to individual criteria and combinations of criteria. The operator developed a method of combining the characteristics that met their goals, and created the ideal map in ariesoGEO.

Figure 1. HS Session Count

Building Level Traffic ProfilingAs can be seen from from Figure 2, with the combination of character-istics mapped, there are clear priority areas of focus, with traffic that is ideally suited to WiFi offload identified. Class leading geolocation allows hotspots down to individual building level to be shown.

Figure 2. Combined Hotspot Identification

Using the ariesoGEO advanced geographical filtering capabilities, shown in Figure 3, the operator can now study each location in turn, understanding in-depth details such as common device types and distribution of traffic through the day to aid the final selection of candidates.

Process SimplificationWith the operator’s experts having proven the methodology to indentify hotspot candidates that deliver the best business returns, the operator called on the support of the Arieso mentoring team to develop GEO document templates to simplify the process. Arieso further assisted by training the operator’s regional teams in the use of these templates, enabling them to rapidly roll out this advanced technique across the entire country and ensuring that engineers of all skill levels followed a simple, proven and consistent process.

Business BenefitsariesoGEO allows operators to take full advantage of the potential of WiFi offload, significantly reducing the cost to serve while improving the customer experience. By enabling the most precise method of targeting WiFi for use consistently across the operator’s business can accelerate its rollout while maximizing quality and return on investment.
