Welcome to your local mag – Widnes Local, the place to look first to find a local tradesman/woman or business right on your doorstep. As ever we’ve got a good selection of editorial content too, which I know from your lovely emails and letters you really enjoy.

Although the longer days have been very welcome, I’m hoping for a little more sunshine so we can crack on with enjoying Pimm’s (or maybe a nice cold lager) with a sizzling BBQ! And lovely English strawberries to follow. As ever the eternal optimist!

We’ve got a great new local writer Laura Daley who’s a pupil at Riverside College and will be writing ‘Life with Laura’ every month, telling us what it’s like to be a teenager in Widnes. I’m really excited to welcome Laura, I hope you enjoy her column on Page 10.

Our new website is up and running now with a great new online directory so you can search for local businesses even if you’ve not got the latest mag to hand. You can always view the latest mag online too. Why not have a look at www.widneslocal.co.uk. You can find us on www.facebook.com/localmags and on twitter at @localmags.

Our latest competition winner is Ann Haslam – well done! Ann wins a £25 M&S voucher. This month we’re celebrating summer and our hidden symbol is a strawberry. (I’ve already mentioned strawberries I know!). At the time of writing this I don’t know who’s

won Wimbledon (fingers crossed still for Murray), but an interesting fact… every year around about 27,000 kilos of strawberries are eaten during the Championships, together with 7,000 litres of cream. That’s a lot of calories. It’s really easy to enter as all you have to do is email or phone the ad and page number of where we’ve hidden the symbol in the magazine and you could win a £25 voucher for M&S. You’ll also need to give us your name, postcode and phone number.

We’re now in our 3rd great year and during that time we’ve become a trusted source for both residents and advertisers alike. So if you’re a local business and want to get into 115 letterboxes for the same price as a first class stamp, just give us a buzz and we can tell you just how easy it is.

Just one last point, remember to keep hold of your Widnes Local until the next one comes through your letterbox – you never know when you might need it. Until next month take care

Abbeyfield is a National organisation with over 700 individual Societies dotted around the country with the aim of providing residential accommodation for older, single people who seek companionship and security with 24 hour assistance and all meals provided.

Abbeyfield Widnes Society’s House was founded in 1986 and opened Littlemore House in Coroners Lane in Widnes in 1994. It operates on a non-profit basis and has a core of local and on-site management and domestic and maintenance staff, supported by dedicated volunteers, who give their time to help residents feel at home.

Littlemore House is set in large landscaped gardens, it provides 10 individual residents rooms each with en-suite facilities. Each resident furnishes their own room. In addition there is a communal lounge, dining room and laundry, etc. There’s also a guest room available for resident’s guests at a moderate rate.

Residents are welcome to share in the running of the House and garden and are encouraged to take an interest in local activities. Visits, outings, and social events are often arranged by volunteer Committee members and friends. Residents may choose to participate in these activities if they wish.

The Abbeyfield organisation was established to provide security and welfare where residents can retain independence free from the worries of maintaining a house, paying bills and dealing with loneliness. Two main meals a day are provided by a resident House Manager. All charges are fixed annually and apply equally throughout Littlemore House. Abbeyfield Societies firmly believe that houses should be accessible to older people, no matter what their income may be.

A varying percentage of residents pay the charges out of their own income and pensions and others obtain help through the State Benefit system. There is no distinction between either form of payment and the contract between the House and the resident is strictly confidential. Payments are collected by the Administrator.

The Widnes Society’s charges for Littlemore House include rent, meals and service charges, TV licence and utility costs, together with heating, lighting and water, community charges and personal alarm costs.

The House operates on a non-profit basis and readers can obtain more information by phoning 0151 424 3338 and the Secretary can answer any queries or you can arrange a visit to see the House. More information can also be found by visiting their website at: www.abbeyfieldwidnes.webeden.co.uk

Life With Laura...Widnes Local’s new student columnistLaura Daley is currently studying English, History, Theatre Studies and Psychology at Cronton Sixth Form. Her ambition for the future is to become an English teacher at a sixth form and hopes to write a fantasy novel.

Students, and teenagers in general, have a very complicated life, despite some people saying that we have it easy nowadays. In addition to studying, we have to take care of ourselves and make sure we look half-decent before leaving the house, we have to keep tabs on our social life whilst obeying the curfews placed on us by paranoid parents, and we have to choose sides should an argument break out between friends.

Yes, it’s a hard life for us teenagers. One of the things you worry most about when taking that extra step from school to college is making friends. I have always been attracted to the outsiders, you know, the people that don’t ‘fi t in’ on the social scale. Personally, I think such a scale is silly; a person shouldn’t be based on what they look like. I found this out by making friends with the so-called ‘weirdos’. Image is a very important factor to most teenagers but I fi nd it easier to socialise with the people who haven’t yet reached the top end

of the popularity scale as it’s more fun learning how a person really thinks, in comparison with someone who focuses entirely on everyone else’s expectations of them.

Although, life isn’t as crazy as I’ve made it out to be… at least, not all the time. Teenagers like me can fi nd fun in everything, even in Widnes, which may seem boring and grey at the best of times. Going out in the rain is fun, honestly! But balancing life between visiting friends and college work can be diffi cult during the peak of the exam period.

Thankfully, I’ve just fi nished my exams, giving me lots of time to go out and enjoy myself. You will often fi nd yourself staring off into space as a teenager, thinking about the summer. Regardless of how much you may enjoy college, you will begin to hope desperately that the sun will rise on the summer holidays sooner rather than later… all pun intended.

I was planning what to do in the summer during the Easter break, and it revolves around what my old school friends are doing and when they have days off . The most educated of teenagers will look forward to leaving school, but you always fi nd yourself missing it dearly. This persuades you to invite all of your friends out to dinner, or to invite them out for a day in the park. And so, you will text them, you will send them a message on Facebook and tell them how much you miss them, and that you ‘need to go out very soooooooooon!’ followed by multiple kisses.

So, as you can tell, being a student can be challenging and rewarding. The point is to feel as though you have achieved something when the summer hits you – it makes summer that extra bit special knowing you have performed well in your exams or coursework. I’ll round it off here by saying sit back, relax, and enjoy your summer!

booksreview

This month’s selction of great books...

The Curiosity Bookshop in Runcorn have a fantastic July promotion on presently

and are off ering 20% discount on all adult paperback fi ction! What a great opportunity

to stock up on some Summer reads...

Penny Lane Is In My Ears & In My Eyesby Stan WilliamsWhen Stan Williams took his skiffl e group, The Satellites, for an audition at the Privvy in 1957 he found himself up against a smart looking group called the Blackjacks. To Stan’s mind they were more rock ‘n roll than skiffl e, taking into account the slick quaff ed hair style of their leader, John Lennon who he knew from school. Also at the same school, were George Harrison and Peter Sissons but this story is more than just school days. It is a memoir of post-war Liverpool, blending social history with family saga forged by an errant father and a heroic uncle. “Penny Lane” is priced at £13.99.

Lost Stations of North West Englandby Paul WrightLost Stations of North West England is the second book in the series by Paul Wright featuring a selection of stations from a variety of diff erent lines in chronological order of opening. This clearly shows how the network developed, expanded and eventually contracted. Dr Beeching’s programme of closures began in the early 1960’s and continued into the 1970’s by which time the damage had been done, leaving a legacy of disused lines and stations that continue to fascinate today. This latest book features 31 locations including Preston Brook Station which opened in July 1837 and Widnes Central, August 1879. The book is published by Silver Link, price £19.99.

Minding Frankieby Maeve BinchyMaeve Binchy’s latest paperback, Minding Frankie (£7.99) has at its heart unconventional families and relationships that are not quite what one might expect at fi rst glance. Is Noel the best choice of father for the unplanned baby? Under the circumstances Stella doesn’t have much choice at all in fi nding a solution for the care of her unborn child. Will Lisa give up everything for the man she loves? Moira knows what’s right, but will her own secrets prevent her from changing the course of baby Frankie’s life? One thing is certain. The arrival of that tiny girl, Frances Stella, changes everything.

Blind Furyby Lynda La PlanteThe body of a young woman is found near to a motorway service station but she seems to have no family or friends who can identify the body. Is this recent case linked to two other unsolved murders? As more evidence is discovered it does begin to look as though this is a triple murder with no suspect. Then a convicted murderer makes contact from his prison cell insisting he can track down the killer. But can DI Anna Travis believe him? Can a killer ever be trusted? About anything? Linda La Plante’s new book is priced at £7.99.

Miracle Cureby Harlan CobenSara and Michael had everything as darlings of the media. The perfect celebrity couple, until they were hit by a mysterious illness. But Dr Harvey Riker has found a miracle cure and one by one his patients begin to recover. Until, that is, they are killed, one by one. Can Lieutenant Bernstein track down the killer? Or will he also become the perfect victim? The killer will stop at nothing to prevent the success of the world’s most needed miraclecure! This is a revival of Harlan Coben’s secondnovel which has been long out of print. Price £7.99

Place in a shallow roasting tin.Cook the shallots for 1 minute in a pan of lightly salted boiling water. 4. Drain well then place in the roasting tin around the lamb. Pour the remaining oil over the shallots.Roast the lamb and shallots for 25 minutes. Remove from the 5. oven and drizzle the warmed honey over the shallots. Roast for a further 10-15 minutes until the lamb is cooked to your liking. Cover the lamb and leave to rest in a warm place for 20 minutes before carving.

Foody Facts...Linguine is often combined with seafood sauces because of the fl at shape, which allows the sauce to stay on the noodle more easily.

There is something lovely about this time of year: even on the less appealing days it rarely gets too chilly, the soil is warm and feels all the more full of potential. But there is no doubt that your vegetable growing may seem to be close to peaking and perhaps in some areas on the decline. Rather than forgetting the fun of growing your own until next year, why not add to what you already have and start some crops from fresh? If you’ve missed the boat totally and never actually planted anything this year, there’s still time to grow some tasty home grown vegetable and herbs....it’s not too late to start, but you’ll have to get your skates on.

Knowing what responds best to late sowing is the key, and knowing what might be worth the risk has the potential to be the icing on the cake. That lovely warm soil is a real advantage to those somewhat tenuous sowings made right at the start of the season, but you may also have to spend more time watering your vegetables, especially when the plants are small.

Sow yourself some ruby chard. These fantastically brightly coloured plants mean you can create

something seriously good-looking as well as tasty. ‘Bright Lights’ is the wackiest with bright yellow, orange, red, pink and purple stems. It can be sown successfully into August and can be used as ‘baby leaves’ for salads or as an alternative to spinach.

Several of the oriental vegetables respond especially well to later sowing. Mizuna is one of my favourites. With its pretty divided leaves and ability to grow very fast, it can be sown right through from now and into September. Good in stir fries or as a salad ingredient, Mizuna does best in a sunny site. A covering of fl eece helps to keep the fl ea-beetle away and so prevent the leaves becoming riddled with tiny holes.

Spring onions make really tasty additions to salads, ploughman’s lunches and stir-fries. They grow rapidly and although it is getting late, a prompt sowing now should still give you a crop of tiny spring onions in October. Sow enough to leave some in the soil where you can then harvest full-sized versions in March.

Carrots can be sown for many weeks of the year and some varieties of ‘maincrop’ carrot including ‘Ideal’ can still be sown until early August. Sow within the week and you’ll be cropping from autumn to Christmas time. Choose a light soil, free from stones, or grow in a deep container. If in doubt about sowing times, just check the packet.

I love eating them, but hate buying those ridiculously expensive baby spinach leaves, but grow your own and you can have as many as you like for little outlay. They are perfect in salads and sandwiches....and much, much tastier and more tender (and a lot cheaper) than those you buy in cellophane bags. Make successional sowings from now and in to September and in fi ve to six weeks you can harvest the baby leaves. If you like full-sized spinach leaves, then just leave the crop in the ground and allow it to grow a little more.

Chinese cabbage is another late-season stalwart. It is one of the fastest growers I know and perfect for anyone who wants a delicate steamed vegetable or a wonderfully tasty and crunchy addition to a Chinese style meal. Also known as Chinese leaves, if you sow promptly you should be harvesting in late October.

If you enjoy miniature beetroot or baby beet as they’re often known, then buy a packet of beetroot seed and sow some of them promptly for a delicious, crop of small-sized beetroot from the autumn until Christmas.

French beans are so much better when grown at home. It is hard to make them tough or tasteless. A speedy sowing now should produce plenty of beans that you can harvest in mid-autumn. Choose a variety such as ‘Tendergreen’.

Kohl rabi is, admittedly, a peculiar looking vegetable as it has really tasty and crisp swollen stems, but it is perfect for adding to salads and great in stir fries too. It performs well in most areas if sown up until

about the middle of this month, and just nine to ten weeks after sowing you should be able to harvest your fi rst crop.

There are numerous diff erent colours and shapes of salad leaf available and they can be sown now, either singly or in combination. Simply use scissors to snip off what you need and as long as you don’t cut too low, they’ll act as a cut-and-come-again crop. Look

out for mixed seed packs including all sorts of tasty varieties such as rocket, baby beet, lettuce and basil. As conditions become cooler, cover the row with fl eece.

Rocket with its spicy dark green leaves makes a great ingredient for salads and because the plants grow so fast, a sowing made now will soon be producing a brilliant crop. Make sowings every couple of weeks.

There...almost too much to eat!

FULL FRONTALFirst impressions count. And it can be quick and easy to update the front of your property, says Katherine Sorrell, whether you’re

thinking of selling or simply want a fresh new look.Where to start? Step outside your house for a moment and give it a long, hard appraisal. Be honest. What does it look like to someone who has never seen it before? Smeary windows and wonky gutters just won’t cut it. Neither will piles of windswept leaves, dead plants, overfl owing bins or grubby net curtains. These are the easy things to fi x. Move wheelie bins or recycling boxes out of sight, clean the windows, wash the nets and sweep, mow and trim the garden, replanting window boxes and pots where necessary. Ensure

particularly if you’re already tackling paintwork and can, therefore, easily cover up holes or gaps left when shapes or sizes change. And the diff erence can be truly amazing – from uninspiring, old-fashioned or cheap-looking

fi ttings to modern or traditional, high quality, tactile accessories. Finally, polish your knockers for a full frontal with pzazz.

New for oldThe next step up from renovating and decorating doors and windows is to replace them entirely. This is really most worth doing when they are either rusted, rotten or otherwise past their sell-by date, or their style is such that they seriously detract from the property as a whole. A 1960s window in a period house, for example, is crying out to be replaced with an elegant timber sash, and a solid, panelled front door would be a great substitute for a fl imsy, fl at one. In some circumstances, uPVC windows are inappropriate, and you could enhance your property enormously by fi tting windows that are more sympathetic. Replacing windows also gives you the opportunity to install double glazing, with resulting improvements in energy effi ciency. And you don’t just have to do like-for-like in terms of size and shape. Without any signifi cant structural alterations you could make a window higher or lower, and you may even be able to install a projecting bay – stealing a little extra space and masses more light.

Finishing touchesWhile tackling doors and windows, consider how much of a wow factor (or not) is given by their knobs, handles, latches and other ‘furniture’. Architectural ironmongery is relatively easy and inexpensive to replace,

that your gutters and downpipes are properly attached, clip back any fl apping aerial cables and align satellite dishes so it all looks neat and tidy.

A lick of paintIt’s always a good idea to ensure that any paintwork on the front of your house is as pristine as possible. This means paying attention to your gate, railings and/or fence, front and garage doors, windows and perhaps the façade itself. For wood- and metal-work, remove any rust or rotten wood, fi ll or replace as required, prime and then paint, using appropriate products and ensuring the colours complement your property and the street as a whole. A window may require just a quick sand or a coat of paint, while a front door could require a few coats over several days – either way, there’s no substitute for that gleaming, fresh look.

Walls may, depending on their height, need scaff olding to be re-painted safely, but if they’re letting the house down with blemishes, cracks or bulging render it’s worth tackling them. If you can see damp patches, make sure you know what caused them and fi x the problem; blown or missing areas of render should be repaired fi rst, too. If an unpainted brick wall is a problem, it’s best to clean off surface grime and, if necessary, repoint the mortar.

thinking of selling or simply want a fresh new look.Where to start?
