Letter from Reverend Hilary
With the wearing of face coverings mandatory now a legal requirement in shops, on public transport and in other locations during the present health crisis, I wonder how wearing one makes you feel. Certainly at first I felt awkward, not least because it had me questioning how could I properly ‘read’ someone else’s expression (but also because my glasses were steaming up!)
I am not alone in this but I am happy to wear a mask appropriately and distance myself from the attitude that we have seen in some circles with some saying ‘No-one’s going to tell me what to do’.
If wearing masks does make us feel disadvantaged, then perhaps we might consider another perspective; that of giving more attention to the whole of how someone else is behaving or communicating and not just to their face. There are all sorts of clues from the eyes or the hands, to the carriage of the shoulders that reveal whether someone is disinterested, excited, understanding or confused. Being reminded of these clues we discover an aspect to human communication that goes beyond the face, that is more subtle and perhaps can make us more vulnerable than if we were ‘barefaced’.
Rowan Williams in a recent letter to the people of St Clement’s Church in Cambridge wrote:- ‘In God’s presence, it’s our whole body, our whole self that speaks to God – in silence, in kneeling or prostration, in lifting hands and eyes. It’s as we attend to the wholeness of each other’s bodily presence, and as we hold our bodies restfully and alertly in God’s presence while we worship, that we begin slowly to grow towards the freedom to put aside our home-made, self-serving masks’.
May this season of face coverings be over soon but may it also be an opportunity to discover afresh what it is to be fully human and in relationship one with another.

Wickham Bishops Flower Club …
Regrettably, the club will not resume until February 2021, in time for our
A.G.M. and first demonstration of the year. This decision was not taken
lightly, but comes as a result of numerous telephone conversations with
N.A.F.A.S., the area group, various demonstrators, our own committee,
as well as other flower clubs. Disappointing though this is, the safety
and well-being of our members is paramount - without whom there would
not be a Flower Club.
On a brighter, and much more optimistic note, next year will be the 50th
anniversary of the club, and with your support, will be a year to
remember - in a good way.
Look forward to seeing everyone again in 2021. Stay Healthy.

Update on the Library …
The Library Working Group welcomed the
reopening of our Village Library, albeit on slightly
reduced hours. See the poster on page 11 for details.
The team has continued to hold (online) meetings to discuss the future
of both the Library Service and the building itself, with ongoing
discussions being held with Essex County Council.
It is unlikely that the clubs and interest groups that we were in the
process of establishing will be able to meet again until next year,
although it may be possible to run a couple of them online. In the
meantime, please be assured that we have not forgotten you and will let
you know as soon as there is some good news to report.

From the Parish Council …
A general meeting of the Parish Council was held online on the 14th July. Councillors were able to discuss items via a video link and residents were able to watch via a YouTube link. The minutes of the meeting can be found at www.wickhambishopsparishcouncil.org
Wickham Bishops needs a Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator. Groups of residents, usually within a limited geographical area, have created WhatsApp groups as a means of communicating with their neighbours and these can be used to inform others quickly if an incident occurs or
suspicious activity is seen. However, there is no overall coordination between the groups and no liaison with local police to pass on information provided by them. It is not an onerous task but would need to be someone with a computer and a couple of hours per month to be able to keep everyone connected. If you feel that this could be you, please contact our Parish Clerk using the details below.
The next general meeting of the Council is scheduled to be held, once again online, on Tuesday 1st September at 7.30 pm and will be available for residents to view on YouTube. Please check our website for the latest details and agenda.
Councillors may be contacted individually, or via the Parish Clerk on 07542 190176, or by email
Fireworks Fireworks can be great fun for some, but not everyone appreciates them. The council recently received several complaints following an evening when some fireworks were discharged at around 11.20 pm.
The law states that fireworks must not be used after 11 pm except on November 5th (midnight) and New Year’s Eve, Chinese New Year and Diwali (1 am).
Please consider your neighbours and their pets if you are intending to set off fireworks late in the evening. Thank you.

… continued on the next page
Eighty years ago, between the
26th May and the 4th June saw
the Dunkirk evacuation, code-
named Operation Dynamo. At the
same time Miss Edith Prance who
lived in the cottage known as
Baxters in Great Totham Road,
Wickham Bishops was working
with seven WW1 colleagues
having set up a Canteen and Rest
Area for French soldiers in North
East France.
At the beginning of WW11 Miss
Prance aged 65 had volunteered
for war service having been an
Ambulance Driver in Northern
France and in Macedonia using
her own Model T Ford. She was
told to go home and get on with
her knitting!
With a number of WW1 veterans,
the Scottish Women’s Hospital
Royaumont Association Canteen
Unit was set up and under the
auspices of the Red Cross they
raised funds, contributed much of
their own money and set off for
France in February 1940. They
eventually set up camp only a
mile from the Maginot Line, the
line of concrete forts set along the
French border with Switzerland,
Germany and Luxembourg.
The Canteen was set up in an
empty girls’ school and soon had
a thousand French troops seeking
hospitality and buying small
essentials from their little shop.
The women were happy to be of
service once again to their
beloved ‘poilus’ – the equivalent
of the British ‘Tommy’.
Because of French censorship
they were unaware of the German
advance and the Dunkirk
evacuation until on the 13th June
1940 they suddenly received the
order from French authorities to
evacuate the area to Metz. The
ladies were reluctant to leave until
by chance they met a British Road
Transport Officer who told them
if they were not gone soon it
would be too late because road
bridges were being blown up; and
they also heard on the radio the
plaintive plea from the French
Prime Minister for help from the
USA.
Miss Prance with two colleagues
crammed their possessions into
her Singer ‘9’ two seater car with
dickie seat and set off. What
followed was six days of an
horrendous, hair-raising journey
all the way to the South Western
Local resident flees from the Nazi advance on the Maginot line
10
port of Bayonne near the Spanish
border and back to the UK by
ship.
Miss Prance’s diary record of the
frightful journey, along with that
of a colleague, ‘Morgan’ in a
second car, was discovered by the
late Ian Valentine in the
Brotherton Library at Leeds
University.
The whole diary transcript of the
journey, along with the life-story
of Miss Prance can be read in
Ian’s biography of Edith,
“Driving to the Limit” available
from Cathy, Prances Cottage, Gt
Totham Rd. Tel’ 892876.
Miss Prance, with four siblings,
was the daughter of a Vicar. One
brother was also a Vicar who
helped at St B in retirement, and
another was in B-Ps South
African Constabulary.
A truly feisty, admirable and
public-spirited woman – a brilliant
read! (BJC June 2020)

The One Stop Shop in Wickham Bishops is the drop-off point for
your donations of food items.
These can be placed in the Foodbank box within the shop.
Thank you for your continuing support during the Coronavirus crisis. We are very thankful for any support you can give. Foodbanks within the Trussell Trust network have seen an 89% increase across our network. By continuing to support us with your donations you are continuing to support those most in need.
We currently need:
Please no baked beans, cereals and biscuits as we have very full stocks of these items!
Please note: We often ask for small packs - larger packs do not fit in our boxes and make it difficult for our clients to carry home. Also, we are unable (for hygiene reasons) to split larger sizes or catering packs.
We are grateful for your donations to the Braintree Area foodbank.
However, we can only accept donations of freshly-bought, unopened and undamaged goods which are still well within their “use by” date (no less than 6 months). We cannot use items which do not meet these requirements, and the donation is wasted.
Thank you.
Food Items: Sponge puddings Rice pudding
Other Essentials: • Toothbrushes • Shampoo • Non-Bio washing liquid - we are unable to accept washing powders at present

wæs hæil
For reasons that I won’t go into now, I was recently looking at the
origin of the word “Hello” which is our usual greeting when meeting
someone. Surprisingly, the use of the word in this way only goes
back as far as the mid 19th century and the invention of the
telephone - prior to that it had been used as a means of attracting
someone’s attention in the way that we might say “Hey” or “Ahoy”
today. The word itself probably derives from the Old German halâ
or holâ or the French holá.
Before we used hello, a common greeting might be “How do you do?”
or “Good day”; the latter is still used in many other European
languages such as “Bonjour”, “Guten Morgen”, “Buongiorno” or
“Buenos días” (interestingly, the Spanish say days in the plural).
However, around a thousand years ago, a common greeting would be
“wæs hæil” (from the Norse “ves heill” ) which meant “Be in good
health”. It is the origin of our words “Hail” as in “Hail Caesar”, not
the weather phenomenon, and “Wassail” which was a cup of wine,
often spiced, offered as a greeting.
Perhaps in these current times, with so many understandably
concerned with their health, we should revert to greeting each other
with “wæs hæil”. If you pronounce it as “wassail” you won’t be far
wrong.
Best Wishes and Keep Safe

Business Directory
If I included the usual display advertisements, the size of the file to download would be prohibitively large, so I have prepared the text only business directory listed below.
Business owners can rest assured that their advertisements will still be included for a full twelve months from whenever we are able to produce printed copies again. In the meantime, I hope that this is an acceptable alternative.
I have included the business name under the type of business listed in the usual index and given one telephone number and either a website address or an email address.
