Wicker Park-Location and Brief HistoryIn 1870, 80 acres of land along Milwaukee Avenue were purchased by Charles and Joel Wicker, and after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, when families searched for land to rebuild their homes, they ended up in “Wicker Park.” Initial immigrants included Germans and Scandinavians. When many Jewish and Polish individuals migrated there, it became known as the “Polish Gold Coast”

Wicker Park is northwest of The Loop, north of the East Village, and just south of Bucktown. It is about 4 acres.

Group experience / highlights

● Through exploring Wicker Park, our group observed that the community is a common hotspot for all individuals to enjoy a unique meal or cup of coffee. The neighborhood itself contained multiple clothing stores, along with a street full of restaurants where you could enjoy a multitude of foods. The blue line station, which is located in the center of Wicker Park, makes moving from one end of the neighborhood to the other a lot easier. Overall, our group learned that Wicker Park contains plenty of community-oriented attractions and shops as some of the businesses originated from Wicker Park. A trip to Stan’s Donuts during your time to Wicker Park is a MUST!

Group reflection Overall, we found that Wicker Park is a really nice place to spend time because it is very visitor friendly. Not only are there many restaurants and entertainment spots, it is a clean, safe, and beautiful neighborhood to just explore. We really enjoyed spending time at Wicker Park, and we all plan on going back some time in the future. Our favorite part was seeing the interesting art community, and how many different opportunities to shop and eat there were.
