letter from the editorsTo the class of 2010,
This special edition of the “Messenger” looks back at the events and people that shaped the class of 2010. We hope to provide our readers with a glance back at the most memorable experiences from their last four years. These moments will show how our senior class has grown and ma-tured. This issue serves as an archive of the past four years.
During our high school years, some of the most moving moments of the 21st century occurred, changing the world and the class of 2010 along with it. Stories that shaped the class of 2010 included Barack Obama’s election as the first black president, the disaster in Haiti, and the shooting of George Tiller in his Wichita church.
Through our time working on this senior issue, we dis-covered the fascinating stories of some of the seniors that walk these halls.
During our time on the newspaper staff, we have done our best to keep the entire student body both informed and entertained through our writing and photography. We ap-preciate all the feedback (both positive and negative) that we received. Thank you for your readership over the years. We sincerely hope that you enjoy both this issue and your bright futures..
Jenice Duong, Ian Bailey, John Camenzind, and Jeremy Koehler, are the senior members of the “Messenger” staff. Not pictured: Suhayla Sibaai. ASHLEY MATTHEWS, HEAD PHOTOGRAPHER

JEREMY KOEHLER, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
the times they are a-changin’Past 4 years highlighted by 2008 presidential election
At first glance, one might say that the world has not
changed so much in the past four years. The Kansas City Royals still suck, politicians are still having sex with every pros-titute and intern in sight, and half of the country still hates the political party in power.
With that said, change might be the most accurate word to describe these past four years. From local changes, like the opening of the Intrust Bank Arena, to the election of the first minority president, this world has definitely changed.
2008 electionThe world event that many
students remember was the 2008 presidential election in which Democrat Barack Obama defeated Republican John Mc-Cain after a lengthy primary battle with fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton.
“The election of Obama really stood out to me,” Matt Phillips, sr., said. “He is the first Demo-cratic president in eight years and our first black president.”
Obama won the Nov. 4 elec-tion by capturing 365 of the 538 possible electoral votes. Anasta-sia Gomez, sr., understood the importance of the 2008 presi-dential election.
“To be the first African-Amer-ican president will go down in history for sure,” Gomez said.
Many seniors said that the historical relevance of the elec-tion stood out them.
“The election itself occurred in the midst of economic and political turmoil,” Bradley said. “Thus, Obama’s ability to rise to office despite being a minority provided hope when it was hard to come by.”
H1N1 outbreakThe past four years have also
included health scares. The H1N1 influenza virus (often referred to as the swine flu) caused over 3,600 deaths in the United States in 2009. Outbreaks of the virus caused
schools in 19 states to close. “The swine flu really stood
out to me,” Crystal Ceballos, sr., said. “It was all over the news and everyone was talking about it. When we heard we had a student infected at East we were all shocked.”
Haiti EarthquakeOn Jan. 12, 2010, tragedy
struck the small island country of Haiti in the form of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake.
“The earthquake in Haiti was devastating to see what happened to that country,” Bailey Avery, sr., said.
In the days and weeks after the earthquake, international response greatly helped the already impoverished coun-try. East students and faculty raised over $12,000 to send to Haiti.
“The earthquake stood out to me because of our school’s re-sponse to the disaster,” Melyssa Warren-King, sr., said.
Tiger WoodsA November 2009 car acci-
dent in the front yard of profes-sional golfer Tiger Woods led to allegations of adultery and a stint in a rehab facility.
“Tiger Woods being addicted to sex stood out to me,” Chaquil Reed, sr., said. “I just thought it was funny.”
2008 Beijing OlympicsThe 2008 summer games
were highlighted by the per-formance of Michael Phelps. Phelps broke the record of fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz by winning eight gold medals.
“The 2008 Bejing Olympics stand out to me,” Daniel Gao, sr., said. “China is my country.”
Jamaican Usain Bolt won the gold medal in the 100 and 200 meter dash while setting the world record in both.
“Bolt breaking the record in the 100 meter dash stood out to me,” Dylan Morlan, sr., said. “That dude is fast.”

I think it’s my personality, pretty much. I have a bubbly personality, and I like to make people laugh and have fun at all times.

I appreciate the honor. I tried to stay focused on my goals and still be involved socially. But as all my goons know, I’m all about my money, cheese, guap, mullah, cheddar, and mozzarella. If you’re not about your money, you’re not motivated enough.

...find a cure for cancer//NivanthikaWimalasena
I’ve always thought doing medical/drug research would be an exciting career, and it’s actually what I plan to do after college. Curing cancer might be a tiny bit on the ambitious side but I’ll do my best.

I honestly don’t know why people voted for me. Maybe because I’m the one person crazy enough to do it. It’s an honor and kind of negative. At least my class is thinking of me. I feel great that I could possibly streak and show my booty everywhere.
“

I think it’s because of the way I do my own thing, sometimes a little eccentrically. I’m into anime, and a lot of other weird, not-so-normal stuff like Japanese horror films. And obvi-ously I dress weird sometimes.

As the year comes to a close and we say goodbye to our school, and most importantly, our friends, we must look forward to our futures. May those futures involve college, military, the work force, others will want to know the places you’ll go. So, here it is, our plans for the future and beyond.

YOU?Who influenced

“I know this is cheesy, but Alex Buck, my boyfriend. He has taught me how to just look at things and evaluate how insignificant they will be in the long run.” - Rachel Butler
“Mr. (Stan) Reimer taught me a lot about life and calculus. He helped me with study skills and taught me how to work through chal-lenges.” - Allie Jenkins
“Mrs. (Jennifer) Fry is the teacher that inspired me and encouraged me throughout the years.” - Qiao Yi Chen
“Mr. (Casey) Christofferson has pushed me to better myself.” - Vanessa Ayala
“Sergeant (April) Floyd and Colo-nel (Michael) George have kept me on track. They are like second parents to me.” - Ashley Tracy
“Anastasia Gomez has taught me to believe that I should not care about what others think.” - Angela Shillinger
“Mrs. (Joan) Kornelson has been a great influence. She has helped me get into many of the organiza-tions I participate in now.” - Erick Heiman
“Mr. (Brandon) Reith has pushed me to do things beyond and above my regular abilities and stan-dards.” - Clyde Samilton Jr.
“Mr. (Ashok) Surender was hard on me at first but as the years went on and I became more ma-ture I realized it was for a good reason.” - Troy Morris Jr.
“Coach (Ron) Allen has been there for me since I came to East. He’s been a great friend and coach to have.” - Randall Rogers
“Mr. (Steve) Maack has incluenced me the most. He has been an amazing English teacher to me during my senior year and an effective coach on the Ultimate team.” - Christian Kaufman
Alesha Shears was most influenced by Lisa Kellerby, english instructor. “She has pressed me on and been sup-portive. She’s a teacher and a friend in one,” she said. “She’s always really open to questions.”
LeShae Squires has been affected most by Doug Riney, choir instructor. “I’ve been in choir for three years and he has always shown me that it’s okay to be serious and have fun at the same time,” she said.
Stacy Mar has been helped by Joe Hutchinson, physics instructor. “He has a great sense of humor but knows when it’s time to get serious and can push us to do our best,” she said.
