Miss L Kirkbright Mr R Evans Acting Head of Sixth Form Academy Principal

The Ridings’ Federation of AcademiesThe Ridings’ Federation of Academies supports the learning and development of over 2,700 young people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire through our two International Academies, Woodlands Primary, Woodlands Nursery and The Federation Sixth Form.

The Federation was established in 2009 with the core purpose of raising and sustaining educational standards. Since then over £35 million has been invested in new facilities at Winterbourne International Academy and Yate International Academy. This will ensure that our students benefit from the best state-of-the-art educational resources available. We have an ethos of internationalism throughout The Ridings’ Federation, which prepares students for their future as global citizens.

Overseas educational trips and experiences Many students are given the opportunity to travel the world to enrich their academic experience and prepare them for their future as global citizens. Business Studies students got to see how the business world of New York works; language students sampled culture in Spain and rebuilt a playground in Mexico; and International Baccalaureate students built a sensory wall for a blind school in India.

Improving education through technologyThe Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is available to all students and can be accessed from any device with Internet access. Students can find activities, revision materials, subject guidance and a whole range of other useful information to help them with their studies.

Life @ The Ridings’ Federation Sixth FormStudents at the Sixth Form not only benefit from a vast range of courses, but from excellent facilities and extra-curricular activities, both in the UK and internationally.

Sport and leisureThe Federation Sixth Form benefits from some fantastic Sport & Leisure facilities, including astro turf for football and hockey, large sports hall, gym, sports pitches and swimming pool.

Music roomsOur music department is fully-equipped with instruments and music production software. We have dedicated practice rooms and encourage regular public performance in the Arts Centre for experience and development. Many Sixth Formers also help run groups for younger students. In 2012, we saw the introduction of Ridings’ Recordings, a record label exclusively for students of The Ridings’ Federation.

Live PerformancesOur students regularly have the opportunity to show off their acting skills and every year we put on a number of productions such as Upload Live, We Will Rock You, Grease, West Side Story, Oliver, and Little Shop of Horrors.

“It’s great that I can access the Media Studies resources and examples from home using the VLE as it helps me to learn more independently.” Demi Brain (Year 13).

AboutEvery two years a group of Winterbourne students participate in a charity-driven trip to Mexico, fundraised through events such as bag packing, car washes and cake sales. They teach English to young pupils in Mexican village schools, and help fund projects such as building a school play park.

The trip also allows the students to practise their Spanish, grasp the experience of a new culture, and gain valuable skills including teamwork and commitment. The students also stayed with Mexican families, allowing them to become independent, and truly gain first-hand knowledge about this area of the world.

Hannah says“The trip allowed us to experience new and different cultures. A lot of preparation was required, and staying with the families gave us plenty of opportunities to practise our Spanish”

AboutGeorgie Bryant is a year 12 student, studying four A-Levels, and has been part of the Student Voice for five years. Her role has included visits to the Houses of Parliament to discuss the millennium development goals, contributing to the new Federation build, and bridging the gap between students and teachers.

She has also been involved in the International Committee whereby year group problems could be shared. This allowed Georgie to influence changes to the Academy and help facilitate improved learning practices.

Georgie’s quote“With Student Voice, we are given the opportunity to voice our opinions or problems, gain confidence, and build relationships within all year groups”

AboutAlex Craig is a Winterbourne sixth form student studying for his A-levels. As part of his EPQ, Alex set up a successful clothing line, called ‘Region’. Initially the business developed via word of mouth, but thanks to clever reinvestment and some additional guidance from his teachers he developed an online presence. The clothing line itself is diverse; ranging from simple plain t-shirts, to intricate patterns and designs. It is now stocked in a local Bristol store.

Alex says“This EPQ has become more than just a project. It has become a big part of my everyday life. I have developed a passion for the brand, the streetwear industry and the independent clothing retailers’ market. It has massively helped me develop my all round personal skills and my subject knowledge.”
