Wifi World Summit 2013 25th-26th September Thistle Marble Arch Dear Delegate, On behalf of Informa Telecoms & Media, I am pleased to welcome you to Wi-Fi World Summit 2013. At a time when small cells and Wi-Fi are developing as key tools for operators when managing network conges-tion, events such as this one are critical in order to provide forums for valuable discussion, learning and networking. Building on the increasing rate of small cell and Wi-Fi deployments, and the growing need for Telco’s to identify and develop viable techniques for developing their networks, in order to guarantee successful futures, the Wi-Fi World Summit 2013 brings together the key stakeholders of the in-dustry to define and debate what Wi-Fi and small cells can really achieve for operators. Discussion is brought together by senior executives from leading operators including, Deutsche Telekom, O2 Wifi, Orange, Telekom Indonesia, SFR, Bouygues Telecom, Mobitel, Belgacom, Telekom Slovenije, and Telecom Italia, as well as the leading vendors who see Wi-Fi as pivotal in securing the future of telecommunications networks. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to join the debate by asking questions, giving feed-back and taking advantage of the networking opportunities throughout the event breaks and lunch. Please also ensure that you take full advantage of our online networking tool which will allow you to download the conference presentations, as well as contact all of the conference delegates. I would like to thank all of those who have made this conference possible, especially our speakers, panellists, moderator and chairmen for their excellent contributions. I would also like to thank our sponsors and industry supporters; Ruckus Wireless, Wi-Fi Alliance, Fon, iPass, Amdocs, Anyfi Networks, Devicescape, Airties, Ixia and Aricent. I hope that you enjoy your time at the Wi-Fi World Summit. My colleagues and I will be on hand throughout the event to assist you however we can. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or comments. Best wishes,

Greg Dearden Conference Researcher, Wireless Networks Informa Telecoms & Media

Wi-Fi roaming: Operators need to evolve strategies to meet

customer demand and maximize opportunities

There remains considerable concern about the business models attached to Wi-Fi roaming, in particular, the cannibalization potential on high-margin international data roaming. This is one of the main reasons for the pure cellular operators’ aversion to Wi-Fi roaming. This argument has weakened somewhat within Europe as a result of retail data price capping but remains a concern in other unregulated markets and for some operators. The Wi-Fi roaming ecosystem (see fig. 1) is evolving as part of the process of Wi-Fi network rollout and global interoperability standardization.

Fig. 1: Wi-Fi roaming value chain players

It is important to note that proximity to the customer dictates the impact of factors such as the customer experience of the roaming service provided. So, for example, a Wi-Fi aggregator partnering with an operator is less affected by the experience of the end customer than an operator will be. This becomes an issue when users are not experiencing the same level of performance when Wi-Fi roaming as they receive from cellular technologies and the customer-facing company cannot directly influence those above it in the value chain. This issue of customer experience is one of the major obstacles to Wi-Fi roaming take-up. Fig. 2 shows the main business approaches, and the strategic intent attached to these approaches, of the players involved and develops on the interrelationships shown in fig. 1. This representation of the Wi-Fi industry illustrates more of the complexity of the inter-relational dynamic while demonstrating some interdependencies. Overlapping zones indicate a complementary working process or collaboration; for example, a close working collaboration can be seen between Wi-Fi access manufacturers and handset manufacturers.

Fig. 2: Detail of Wi-Fi roaming value chain players’ strategic intent and business model approach

In the value chain, there is a clear opportunity for service-solution providers to facilitate Wi-Fi roaming. The opportunities for service facilitation or process enablement are in areas that include operation and business support delivered through software, services and applications, including billing, rating and tracking of Wi-Fi roaming traffic. One of the most important drivers for Wi-Fi roaming is the impetus behind standardizing the Wi-Fi roaming process. This is an ongoing Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA) project that passed an important milestone when the Wi-Fi Certified Passpoint initiative (see fig. 3), a device-certification scheme defined by interoperability and roaming capabilities, was announced recently. This initiative has been tied to the HotSpot 2.0 (HS2) to provide roaming Wi-Fi customers with streamlined discoverability, automated connectivity and secured access. portion of your bandwidth, you will still be able to enjoy the same connection speeds as before. Additional-

ly, you will not be held liable for the use of your public network.

As a sharing Fon member, you will be able to enjoy all of the network’s hotspots anywhere in the world for

free.

Anyfi Networks is the Swedish company behind the open Wi-Fi mobility platform Anyfi.net. Founded in

2009, it is leading the way in carrier-grade Wi-Fi services with a seamless user experience. Anyfi Networks'

flagship solution lets Internet service providers deliver the home Wi-Fi user experience on the go. There is no

subscriber registration process, no client-side software to install and no additional usernames or passwords to

remember — it just works. The standard WPA2 security mechanism ensures end-to-end security, over both air

and wire.

Today, one in six people around the world use Wi-Fi® at home, at work and on the move.

Wi-Fi Alliance® is a global non-profit industry association of more than 500 companies devoted to enabling

seamless connectivity. With technology development, market building, and regulatory programs, Wi-Fi

Alliance has enabled widespread adoption of Wi-Fi worldwide. The Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ program was

launched in March 2000.

It provides a widely-recognized designation of interoperability and quality and it helps to

ensure that Wi-Fi-enabled products deliver the best user experience. Wi-Fi

Alliance has certified more than 14,000 products, encouraging the expanded use of

Wi-Fi products and services in new and established markets. The innovation and thought

leadership of Wi-Fi Alliance drives new Wi-Fi applications and products, which continue to

enrich our lives.
