such as photographs and maps.
Users should be aware that additional undigitized material about this property may be found in on-site
architectural reports, copies of HABS/HAER or other documentation, drawings, and the “vertical files” at
the MHT Library in Crownsville. The vertical files may include newspaper clippings, field notes, draft
versions of forms and architectural reports, photographs, maps, and drawings. Researchers who need a
thorough understanding of this property should plan to visit the MHT Library as part of their research
project; look at the MHT web site (mht.maryland.gov) for details about how to make an appointment.

Elijah Stanton Adkins (1849-1912), founder of the E. S. Adkins & Company, moved to
Salisbury from Powellville in 1892. After acquiring several parcels of land in and around
the intersection of the N.Y.P. & N. and Baltimore & Eastern Shore railroads, he located
his new business at the junction of the two rail lines, and his house was sited within a
few hundred feet of Mill No. 1 on the corner of North Division and Philadelphia streets.
On the corner lot, he financed the construction of a large Victorian frame house. The
relocation of the Adkins family and its business to Salisbury was commented on in the
Salisbury Advertiser on June 3, 1893:
Mr. E. S. Adkins has removed his family form Powellville to Salisbury. He is at present occupying the J. McLain Brown house pending the completion of his own, now in the process of erection, on Division street. Mr. Adkins' industries here are getting underway. The saw mills are running, and Contractor Thos. H. Mitchell is pushing to completion the work of putting in the machinery of the factory.
The outline of the Victorian house that E. S. Adkins financed appears on the
1904 Sanborn Insurance map. Similar to several dwellings on North Division Street, the
house was designed to face the corner with a center entrance oriented to the intersection
of the two streets and lateral wings extending to each side. By the time the updated map
was published in 1916, the Adkins house had been significantly redesigned and rebuilt,
clearly after E. S. Adkins's death in 1912.

Distinctive for its long North Division Street fa<;ade, the five-bay, asymmetrically
planned house blends Victorian bay windows, bracketed eaves, and fishscaled shingled
walls with Colonial Revival Tuscan columns and hip roofed dormers.
The Adkins house remained in family hands through the transfer of interests to
Harry C. Adkins in 1920. The house and comer lot were maintained with the estate
holdings of Harry C. Adkins until 1980.

Prepare both a one paragraph summary and a comprehensive description of the resource and its various elements as it exists today.
The Elijah Stanton Adkins house stands at 801 North Division Street north of the Newtown Historic District in the City of Salisbury, Wicomico County, Maryland. The house is located on the northeast comer of the intersection of North Division and Philadelphia streets. Facing west, the principal roof of the two-and-a-half story, asymmetrically planned frame dwelling is oriented on a north/south a.xis.
Begun in 1893 and significantly altered around 1915, the two-and-a-half story, five-bay, asymmetrically designed frame dwelling is supported on a stretcher bond foundation with the exterior clad in a combination of plain weatherboards and fishscale shingles. The main block is covered by a steeply pitched hip roof with multiple gable roofed extensions. The roofs are sheathed with asphalt shingles. Attached to the back of the main block are a pair of two-story rear wings. Joining the house on the lot is a single-story, gable-front frame garage.
The west (main) elevation is an asymmetrical five-bay, ell-shaped front with a projecting two-story, two-bay pavilion on the north side. The pavilion is defined by a single-story, three-sided bay window with nine-over-one sash windows. The second floor is lighted by nine-over-one sash windows as well. The gable end has an enclosed pediment with a paired set of six-over-one sash windows. The tympanum is framed by a boldly bracketed eave. The entrance is located in the recessed wall, which is sheltered on the first floor by a Tuscan columned, wraparound porch. The entrance bay of the porch is defined by a cross gable with a bracketed eave. Stretching between the Tuscan columns is a rectangular baluster handrail. The six-panel front door is framed by a boldly detailed surround with neoclassical pilasters framing four-over-four sash sidelight windows. To the south of the entrance bay is a tripartite series of windows with a twelve-over-one center window and six-overone flanking sash. The second floor is marked by a tripartite window above the entrance bay with a twelve-overone center sash flanked by six-over-one side windows. Nine-over-one sash windows marked by adjacent two bays, and each opening is flanked with louvered shutters. The roof is marked by a pair of hip roofed dormers sheathed with wood shingles and fitted with six-over-one sash windows.
The south gable end is a two-bay elevation with an interior/exterior stretcher bond brick stack rising through the center of the wall. Nine-over-one sash windows light the first and second floors. The first floor is sheltered by a continuation of the Tuscan columned porch, which is entered through fully glazed French doors to the side of the chimney stack. The gable end is trimmed with a bracketed eave, and quarter round windows light the attic.
The north side of the house is defined by rows of nine-over-one sash windows which light the first and second floors. An interior brick stack pierces the roofline.
The east (rear) wall is dominated by two, two-story, rear wings which extend from either end of the main block. In between the two wings is a two-story, shed roofed infill distinguished by banks of nine-over-one and six-over-one sash windows. The north service wing is extended farther east by a single-story gable roofed section.
The interior of the house was not seen.
Standing behind the house is a single-story, gable-front frame garage sheathed with weatherboard siding. Board doors pierce the south (main) wall.
