WI-170 Crawford-Jones House Quantico Private
The Crawford-Jones house is a late nineteenth century tee-shaped frame
dwelling which contributes to the historic character of Quantico. The
asymmetrical main elevation with its projecting two-story bay pavilion
repeats a common architectural form for houses dating to the last decades
of the nineteenth century.
Construction of this house was probably accomplished during the
ownership of Henry Crawford and before his death in 1883, although
another house stood on this lot during the third quarter of the nineteenth
century. Designated on the 1877 Lake, Griffing, and Stevenson atlas map,
a tailor's shop is located next to the structure identified as Henry
Crawford's house. The architectura 1 features of the extant house,
however, suggest this may be a slightly later structure dating from 1880-
1900.
In his will, written in July 1868, Henry Crawford intended to leave
his "house and lot in the village of Quantico ..• where I now reside" to his
wife Margaret D. Crawford, and following her death to his daughters, Mary
E. and Hetty Crawford. Fifteen years later, in March 1883, his will was
probated following his death, and the house and lot passed his married
daughter, Mary E. Jones. Mary E. Jones and her husband, Albert L.
Jones, occupied the house until the mid 1930s when a default on the
mortgage forced an auction of the property. The current owners
purchased the property in March 1976.

The Crawford-Jones house, also known as the Tobat house, stands on the east side of Main Street in the center of Quantico, Wicomico County, Maryland. The two-story tee-shaped frame house faces west with the principal gable roof oriented on an east/west axis.
Dating to around 1880-90, this two-story, tee-shaped frame dwelling is supported on an infilled brick pier foundation, and the house is clad with asbestos shingles. The steeply pitched roof is covered with asphalt shingles. Joining the house on the lot is a single-story frame garage sheathed with weatherboard siding and covered with a tin roof.
The west (main) elevation of the house is an asymmetrical three-bay facade with a recessed front door sheltered by a hip roof front porch supported on square posts. The front door is flanked by three-light sidelights. Single-pane sash windows light the first and second floors. The adjacent front pavilion is a three-sided bay with single-pane sash windows on each face. A louvered vent marks the upper gable end. The gable end is finished with a flush nailed bargeboard trimmed with a crown molding.
The south side of the house is three bays across with single-pane sash windows lighting the first and second floors. Interior brick stove chimneys rise through the center of the main block. Attached to the back of the house is a single-story screened-in porch.
The interior was not seen.

This house contributes to the historic character of the Quantico district, and therefore deserves a listing under Category C, which identifies a property where alterations should be considered carefully in that the structure adjoining a property classified in the A or B category.
