Why do we use Damaru, Bell, and Vajra? These implements represent the outer, inner and secret offerings to the Guru-Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Damaru is only used in the practice of Highest Yoga tantra practice. The Damaru is used to draw in the Dakinis. There are three different levels of Dakinis. First or Outer is the one who has ability to give realizations of generation stage. Second or Inner Dakini is the one who has ability to grant realization of clear light, the illusory body Dakini. There is also third Dakini or the Secret Dakini. She is the one who has achieved unification of the the clear light and illusory body. She has ability to grant generation and completion stage union. The Dakini are also called the sky-goers. So when we use the Damaru we call and draw the Dakinis in. Dakinis in turn bless our chakras, winds and drops. When we receive their blessing we are are able to stop the gross mind and manifest subtle, extremely subtle and extremely subtle mind. These minds are actually always within us, but they are simply clouded by our delusions during every day life. So when we practice and use Damaru they become manifest. When Damaru is played it is placed at the navel level to increase the tummo or inner heat fire. The two sides of Damaru represent unification of method and wisdom. Next we will review Vajra and Bell. Their general meaning is also the union of method and wisdom. Bell represents wisdom and emptiness, while Vajra represents the method. By using them together we practice method and wisdom as one. Method become the cause to chive our future Rupakaya, the wisdom becomes the cause to achieve our future Dharmakaya. Achieving these two kayas is our goal, because this is what will lead us to enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. The bell and vajra are also part of our samaya substances. When you ring bell always hold the vajra in the hand, they are almost never used separately. Normally we ring the bell, during all offerings ( ARGHAM, PADYAM, PUSHPE, DHUPE, etc). Sometimes we also ring the bell during recitation of Vajrasattva mantra, but at that time it is done to remind us the essence of emptiness. All the phenomena are empty and the sound of the bell reminds us of that. The bell is used at the level of your heart. The reason because the extremely subtle mind, or the mind of clear light is located there, inside the central channel. Geshe-la will be teaching us how to properly use all implements during Guru Puja and Tsok practices. This is very rare opportunity as these are special practices that are normally ONLY taught to Monastics in Monastic Tantric College setting. To have this class and being able to learn from the fully qualified teacher is indeed a very precious opportunity. Please join us for this great teachings. We also have Bell and Vajra available for sale at our Center. Please inquire before or after class from one of our team members. Thank you!
