Every Student in Schoolville liked technology a LOT.

But the Grinch, Who lived just north of Schoolville, did NOT. So he slipped into town under cover of dark

And took ALL their technology,Every single last spark.

What made him do this? WHY might you ask?  We will try to explain, since that is our task...

Page 4: "Why the Grinch Stole Technology!" Group 2 Point/Counterpoint: Pro- Technology in Education.

Digital FamiliarityThe Grinch plotted his plan with an evil sneer. He hated technology all times of the year...    "Every school morning they come with their smiles, with laptops and iPods, You hear them for MILES!  Without all their playthings they'll sit and keep mum.  Without all their gizmos their brains will stay numb!I know they're so used to their digital tools, that by taking them all, I'll leave them as fools!"

Page 5: "Why the Grinch Stole Technology!" Group 2 Point/Counterpoint: Pro- Technology in Education.

Digital Familiarity "Today's students have mastered a large variety of tools that we will never master with the same level of skill. From computers to calculators to MP3 players to camera phones, these tools are like extensions of their brains. Educating or evaluating students without these tools makes no more sense to them than educating or evaluating a plumberwithout his or her wrench."  (Prensky)

Learning StylesNow all of the students are different in learning,Their teacher tries teaching, but their brains just sit churning.

They have different styles of learning the info:Some students hate reading, and some find it simple. Some students like talking, and some write it down,It's through these different styles that learning is found.

Without that technology, they'll all just be stuck in a school where the learning is found all by luck.

Learning Styles

Technology in the classroom helps teachers reach many of the learning styles that are often left out.  For example, "Blogs are dynamic learning sites that allow readers to exchange ideas, links, and questions.  ...  The learner, who needs interaction with other people and active products, would find blogging a great technique to enhance their learning."  (Collins)

Teaching with RelevanceStudents love learning most when it fits in their world;teachers must find connections for each boy and girl.

The subject must be super close to real-lifeor students will revolt, causing everyone strife.

Through use of the Internet gadgets and toysthe teacher can find stuff for all girls and boys. If I take all their tools, their connection, their talk,They'll have to revert back to teaching with chalk.

Teaching with Relevance

"...using technology in this classroom environment created a learning environment where students were able to solve a problem, via the interactive multimedia project, that was authentic and relevant to them, and allowed them to collaborate and work together as a team to complete the project, and to claim responsibility and ownership of their development process. ... Therefore, this research study has shown that incorporating multimedia technology into a constructivist learning environment can lead to innovative teaching and learning methods for the improvement of classroom learning." (Neo, Mai, and Tse-Kian Neo)

Media Literacy“Literacy" has changed oh-so-VERY muchThey can't get by with just books and such. By taking their digital media today, They won’t be literate the MODERN way! They'll read and they'll write just like back in my yearsAnd digital media will leave them in tears! Success outside of this school will be rareInept in technology, just see how they’ll fare!

Page 11: "Why the Grinch Stole Technology!" Group 2 Point/Counterpoint: Pro- Technology in Education.

Media Literacy "...because of the availability of digital technologies, today's teenagers bring to school a rich and different set of literacy practices and background that is often unacknowledged or underused by educators. As always, it is the responsibility of today's educators to build a bridge between the knowledge students already have and the content that they need to learn to be successful inside and outside of school. "

(Considine, Horton, and Moorman)

Beyond the ClassroomThe Grinch knows these things help extend teacher's reachFrom Spain to Australia, to students studying on a beach.

If I let them keep all of their techy delights,They'll help people learn at the highest of heights!

Through digital connections in this one small school,Learning loses its boundaries and becomes a WORLDLY tool.

Even students at home sick in bed can engage.Just the thought of THAT leaves me burning with rage!

Page 13: "Why the Grinch Stole Technology!" Group 2 Point/Counterpoint: Pro- Technology in Education.

Beyond the Classroom"Teaching beyond the classroom wall is technologically feasible, economical, and sensible. Through satellite transmissions, videotaping, multimedia CD-ROMs, laserdiscs, audio links, and the Internet, the activities that were formerly bound to the campus classroom can now be enjoyed by students at any time in almost any place. In addition to allowing the teacher to reach distance audiences, technological innovations facilitate interaction between students at different places and encourage collaborative efforts by instructional teams with members situated at different locations." (Brayley)

Student Attention and Involvement

Attention, Attention!  Teachers want it so madly.Without all these tools, students tune out, focus badly.

And you want the students INVOLVED, did you say?Just watch how THAT drops when I take tech junk away! With my bag of multimedia and tech tools they enjoy,The students' engagement is what I'll surely destroy!

Student Attention and Involvement

"When used well, technology can add many valuable dimensions to classroom learning activity. In addition to contributing a measure of entertainment and providing multi-sensory stimulation, advanced technology can facilitate student involvement at levels that are difficult to achieve through unaided instruction. While the classroom teacher should not feel obligated to compete with Disney for the students' interest, the wise educator recognizes and capitalizes on the potential attention-getting and attention-keeping function of technology in the recreation education classroom. Instruction is usually much more palatable when spiced with visual images, dramatic performance, music and sound, and interactive animation." (Brayley)

Enhances Reading Comprehension

Like when I was a young Grinch, learning to read, their eyes and the book are all they should need.

These teachers are helping them WAY too much,by giving them pictures and sounds and such.

The words and the pictures and the audio - oh my!I'll take them all in my sleigh in the sky.If a student can't read, the problem should be all his.He just won't grow up as a reading - wiz.

Page 17: "Why the Grinch Stole Technology!" Group 2 Point/Counterpoint: Pro- Technology in Education.

Enhances Reading Comprehension

"By combining words with pictures and audio, multimedia programs enable people with varying levels of literacy and math skills to learn by using sight, hearing and touch. Evidence suggests that using multimedia segments significantly aids in reading comprehension."

Interpersonal SkillsAs they go out to their jobs when they're a bit older,I want the whole world to give them the shoulder.

Those techy tools that they use all day longwill help build communication that is oh-so-strong.If I take them away, they'll have to sit still and readand wouldn't be getting all that they need. No longer can they ask the help of their friends, the problem will be all theirs in the end.

Page 19: "Why the Grinch Stole Technology!" Group 2 Point/Counterpoint: Pro- Technology in Education.

Interpersonal Skills

"Instructional technologies help people to learn to problem-solve and work in teams, which supports the development of interpersonal skills."

(Rogers)

The Grinch stopped short and looked up from his theft:

"If I keep this up, what kind of learning will be left?

Sure, students can learn without techy toysBut it's clear that this stuff helps all girls and boys.

Students in Schoolville will still make the bestOf paper and rulers and books they'll digest,

But poor little Johnny and poor little Suewill learn less than they could, THEN what will they do?"

Page 21: "Why the Grinch Stole Technology!" Group 2 Point/Counterpoint: Pro- Technology in Education.

"When the buzz from their gadgets has died way far down

They might sit in silence, not making a sound.

But then when they leave their school for the day,They'll be STARVED for their gizmos and play play PLAY!

Getting jobs in this age will just not be as easy,

Without practicing these doo-dads that make me feel queasy.

If I give back computers, SMART boards, and such, and they are used properly, kids will learn MUCH."

Page 22: "Why the Grinch Stole Technology!" Group 2 Point/Counterpoint: Pro- Technology in Education.

With all of these thoughts, his Grinch-heart grew warm.He smiled at the students and told them to swarm.

So the students of Schoolville rounded up their tech waresAnd received Grinch-green iPods...

...to show the Grinch cared!~

When faced with the decision: To tech or not?We hope you'll consider the Grinch and his lot!
