    Manypeopleareterrifiedofspeakinginpublic,eventhoughitprobablyisnttruethatitedgesoutdeathatthetopofthelistofmostcommonfears.MyfirstpresentationwasovertenyearsagoatalocalconferenceforEnglishteachers.Iwasverynervousandnotatallconfidentspeakinginfrontofmypeers.Idontreallyremembermuchaboutthepresentation,butsincethenIvegoneontogivemorethan100talksatconferences,events,andseminars.Imnowprettyhappyinfrontofaroomfullofstrangers,andpresentinghasbecomeoneofthemostenjoyablepartsofmyjob.

    ThereareseveralgoodreasonstointroducepresentationandpublicspeakingpracticeintoourEFLandESLclasses.Thefirstandmostimportantisthateffectivepresentationandpublicspeakingskillsareavaluablelifeskill.Manyofourlearnerswillneedtheminthefuture,andappreciatethechancetopracticethemnow.Presentationpracticealsoallowsteacherstointroducepersonalisationanddifferenttopicsintoclasses.Learnerscanchoosethecontenttheypresent,andthisbringsavarietyofinformationandideasintotheclassroom.Learnerscanlearnmoreabouteachother,andpresentationscanalsobeaneasywaytobreakupacourseandprovideachangeofpace.

    Beforegivingapresentation,learnerswillhavetospendtimedrafting,editing,memorizing,andpracticingtheircontent.Thisallowsthemtoreallyinternalizethelanguagewithoutthetediumorstalenesssometimesassociatedwithdrillingandmemorization.Inaddition,learnersareabletolistentotheirclassmatestalkingaboutvariationsonatopic,givingthemusefulextensivelisteningpractice.Becominganeffectivepresenterrequiresawarenessofeffectivepresentingtechniques,havingmeaningfulcontenttodeliver,andmostofall,lotsofpractice.Wecanprovideourlearnerswiththefirstandthirdofthese,andguidethemastheyattempttoprovidethesecond.

    Oneofthemostpracticalwaystoteachpresentingskillsistobreakthecomplexandsometimesoverwhelmingexperiencedownintodiscreteskills.Thismakesiteasytointroduceandpracticethemgradually.
