What is Philosophy? Philosophy means “love of wisdom”--from the
Greek philos (love) and sophia (wisdom).
Philosophy is distinguished from other disciplines by its critical systematic approach
and its reliance on reasoned argument
Philosophy is the ultimate transferable work skill.
Teaches not what to think, but how to think
Develops analytic skills and problem solving abilities
Philosophy majors are widely employable.
Law, teaching, diplomacy, public service, publishing, journalism, sciences, mathematics, business, and the arts, among others.
Philosophy majors outperform students from other disciplines in standardized tests.
On the GRE (Graduate Record Examination): philosophers achieve
the highest mean verbal score of students in all majors.
