My experience in the IoT market Head of pre-sales mobile / Business Development Mananger for mobile ICT solutions
• Promotion 1998 of Telecom
Bretagne a French high
school for telecom.
• Pre-sales Consultant, Pre-
sales Manager, Senior
Product Manager for WAN
fixed networks, DRC,
mobile offers including
MDM and security.
• Responsible for moving
Orange Polska m2m data
transmission offer towards
end2end solution.
• Vertical approach: water
smart metering, lightning,
connected cars,
environment parameter
mesuring, power supply
distribution, eHealth,
wellness.
• Spent 5 years in
Algeria
• another 5 in France
• 2 children
• dirt biker
My path What is important
currently Privately
Polish M2M market
• Very competitive and price sensitive
• Innovation is always driven by customers needs.
• As theft of cars and petrol was a national sport, we developed the connected
cars 10 years ago.
• Most of our M2M solution are being on GSM modules but the boxes are build
locally. We are a large exporter of end2end solutions - for example AIUT a
Polish m2m company exported over 100k devices which are mostly in UK,
Ireland etc.

Why 2G is such a success in IoT?
My guess are: • low frequencies used - 900 Mhz - good penetration within buildings and rural
areas
• low cost of modules - down to a couple of $,
• low energy consumption
• but lets speak the m2m device producers:
• enquiry within Polish m2m equipement manufacturers (12 comapnies,
yearly production of about 500k eqt).

Why 3G is almost not existent in M2M applications?
How about LTE?
3G was advertised with: • bandwidth, latency,
• Video.
• QoS,
For M2M/IoT • High demand for power
• price of modules never dropped
to around 10$.
3G 4G
4G the same • Bandwidth,
• Number of devices connected,
• hopefully we have currently the Cat-0
and Cat-M to be specificated,
• in many aspects the Cat-M will only be
as good as 2G modules and this after
some year of technical verification – by
2020?
What are the key features that 5G has to inherit form 2G?
• faster up to 1Gbps,
• low latency,
• more traffic,
• heterogeneous network access 5G will
be using a lot of frequencies,
• moreover high frequencies to be used
13.4~14 GHz, 18.1~18.6 GHz, 27~29.5
GHz, 38~39.5GHz.
what we know about 5G:
• a focus on current IoT needs, those real
not imagined by equipement suppliers,
• low frequencies to be specified but
more importan used by telco operator
and modules suppliers,
• focus on power consumption,
• low cost
What we needs from 5G :
Next steps
• look closely on what’s really important in IoT connectivity,
• develop at least some common frequencies for IoT in 5G,
• lets start to work on 5G cat-M right now!
• look for advanced solution from regional markets as Poland
ex. Utilities measurements, connected cars…
