Dear Friends,Whenever I say "doing good is good business," I'm careful to clarify. Financial success isn't the reason to do good. Simply doing the right thing is all the motivation any of us should need. But business success is a likely benefit of a sustainable and ethical approach. (A recent survey by Harvard Business Review Analytics indicates that companies guided by a purpose beyond making money are significantly more financially successful than explicitly profit-driven rivals, for example.)

Frontier's success has gone hand-in-hand with a strong commitment to the purpose of doing good. We give 4% of our pre-tax profit — over $1.2 million in the last two years — to social causes. Half of this amount helps our Well Earth sourcing partners and their communities. We also fund many charitable groups in this country and support numerous organizations that research and promote organic and sustainable agriculture.

Direct buying helps our sourcing partners (often co-ops of small-growers) by providing stable markets and good crop prices that they don't have to share with middlemen — income that makes life better for everyone in the poor agricultural communities. We also help growers with the training, technical support and equipment they need to improve their operations. Sometimes we help them achieve organic and Fair Trade certification so they can earn additional income and social premiums.

We also help the communities where our growers live — by digging wells to provide clean water, building schools and dental clinics, funding access to education for kids in remote villages, and supporting other community improvements.

So how does this giving benefit our co-op as a business? One example is our relationship with our Well Earth partner FEDECOVERA (a co-op whose members are 41 grower co-ops representing over 50,000 small farmers). We've helped their farmers with training, organic conversion and certification, and the introduction of new, profitable crops — and we also recently helped them open a brand new dental clinic by funding the staff and equipment.

In return, they've become a stable, reliable source of high quality, organic allspice — an exceptional and valuable supplier for us. Also, it's because of our partnership with FEDECOVERA that we are able to maintain our high quality standard for cardamom pods. We sell only G1 (grade 1) pods, which are the boldest, largest and greenest pods that are harvested every year — the top 1-2% of the crop. Due to our close relationship with FEDECOVERA, they sell us all of their G1 output, allowing us to meet rising demand and weather crop shortages in the cardamom market while maintaining our high quality standard.

Over the last 12 years, while doing business ethically and sustainably — rapidly expanding our social giving, actually — we've had revenue growth of over 400%. We reached over $147 million dollars in net sales last year and returned a net income of about 15% to our members. Our commitment to being a socially responsible business has contributed significantly to that success, through both cooperative partnerships with growers and enthusiasm for our products by our members and consumers.

Well Earth® Funding Supports Co-op Dental Clinic in Guatemala

When you and your customers shake flavorful bursts of Frontier and Simply Organic ground cardamom and allspice into rice dishes, sauces, pastries, cookies and chai, you’re helping farmers in Guatemala live better lives. Their well-being, and now their dental health, is supported by the way we bring their cardamom (organic and non-organic) and allspice (organic) to market. These farmers also grow the cardamom that produces Aura Cacia cardamom essential oil.

Our Well Earth® program provides funding for a dental clinic operated by FEDECOVERA, a co-op that's the world's largest cardamom supplier. FEDECOVERA has run a dental clinic for a while now, but they’ve recently expanded it. They’ve opened a new building and, helped by a nearly $50k donation from Frontier, added equipment and a full-time dentist. The clinic serves 25,000 people (growers and their families) who are part of 41 independent grower co-ops organized under the larger FEDECOVERA co-op.

If you’re keeping score, we’re talking about a co-op to co-op to co-op situation here, all tailored toward nurturing people and planet while delivering high quality products. For Frontier customers that are also co-ops, then it’s a co-op to co-op to co-op to co-op sequence of shared values!

The farmers who grow our cardamom and allspice in Guatemala are mostly indigenous Mayan (Q’eqchi’) people who don’t have easy access to medical and dental facilities. They are resourceful farmers who can do a lot with the tricky but fertile land they live on. Using sustainable farming methods handed down for generations, they grow many different kinds of crops including coffee, tea, cloves and bananas, often in harmony on the same land at the same time.


FEDECOVERA cares greatly about their member communities the co-op organizes health clinics, business support services and several other programs to help their farmers. We relish the opportunity to work with our suppliers to sustain healthy communities, so we asked FEDECOVERA how we could help. Our support of the dental clinic, along with fair pricing and all the other aspects of our Well Earth program, not only benefits the hardworking farmers, but also helps maintain the high quality of our products. Like us, the farmers value fairness and integrity – and this is reflected in the botanicals they grow for us.

We Give Back to Our Grower Communities.We help the often poor agricultural communities where many of our herbs and spices are grown. A major portion of our social giving goes to improve life in our sourcing communities. We built a preschool in Madagascar, where our organic ylang ylang essential oil is produced. Between 40 and 50 children ages 2 to 5 attend this school. We also support our organic cinnamon farmers in Vietnam by providing beds, books, supplies, food and clothing so that 200 children can attend school.

We WORK DIRECTLY WITH our FARMERS.We started our Well Earth® sourcing program to develop sustainable sources for the products we offer and to raise the standard of living of our suppliers. We travel around the world to work directly with farmers to achieve organic and sustainable production, share our knowledge and expertise to maximize quality and productivity, and support their communities by paying fair market prices and funding community projects.

a look back at our first 40 years

19761981 We elect our first Board of Directors (above).

Throughout our 40-year history, we've been committed to doing business the right way. We were the first U.S. supplier to offer organic herbs and spices and the first to be certified as an organic processor. And our social giving through the years has helped communities all over the world live better lives. We're proud of our financial success and growth, but we're most proud that our 40 years of being a successful co-op is the result of doing business in keeping with our mission statement:

1982Purchase 10 acres near Norway, Iowa, and built 22,152 square-foot facility.

1986We become the first herb and spice manufacturer with certified organic processing.

1990Create Frontier Research Farm for testing and developing methods of organic agriculture.

1992Host first HerbFest.We hosted 11 subsequent HerbFest conferences. Drawing as many as 1,425 attendees from across the country, HerbFest was the country’s largest annual conference on herbs and sustainable living.

1992Re-establish native tall grass prairie on 21 acres of our Norway, Iowa, site.

1993Having a nose for quality, we acquire the market-leading aromatherapy brand: Aura Cacia®.

Rick Stewart and his wife Colleen begin selling one-pound bags of herbs and spices to natural food co-ops in the Midwest. From this small cabin Frontier Co-op was born. Inc. magazine ranked us 78th among

“America’s 500 Fastest Growing Companies.”

1989We become the first to use CO2 fumigation for safe, natural infestation control.

1983

1993-95 For three consecutive years Working Mother magazine named Frontier as one of the

“100 Best Companies in America for Working Mothers.”

1980Return first patronage refund.As a co-op, Frontier has returned almost $7 million dollars to its member/owners.

1978 We begin selling certified organic products.

1978 Spurred by rapid growth, we move from the two-room cabin to a 5,200 square-foot grocery store in Fairfax, Iowa.

1978Establish childcare subsidy and employee lunch program. These two early employee benefits set the tone for a family-friendly and innovative workplace. As we grew, these evolved into subsidized on-site childcare, gymnasium and cafeteria. Other benefits include a computer purchase plan, at-work haircuts and car care.

1995We become the first to offer certified organic essential oils, setting new standards of quality in aromatherapy.


2016

1996Establish Goldenseal Project to counteract overharvesting. We converted all of our Goldenseal to domestically grown, funded research and training to increase the number of commercial growers, and informed consumers about the plant’s endangerment.

Today we are just as committed to quality products and our socially responsible values as we were 40 years ago. We now have over 500 employees dedicated to those values—and to providing you with quality products and exceptional service.

2015We fund an expansion of the dental services provided by FEDECOVERA, our Well Earth partner for cardamom and allspice, providing equipment and staff for a new Guatemalan clinic building that services 25,000 mostly indigenous Mayan growers and their families.

2014We launch our first labeled Non-GMO Verified Frontier products — Vanilla Extracts and Flavorings — the first Non-GMO Verified vanillas available.

2013We implement the Vietnam School Project, providing 300 dormitory-style bunk beds and subsidized meals, books, and school supplies so children in the remote communities that supply our Vietnam cinnamon can attend school.

2012Our Well Earth program provides a $40,000 grant to build wells in the Madagascar communities supplying our vanilla — 49 new wells bring clean, convenient water to thousands of people in 38 villages.

2012Using funds from the new Aura Cacia Organic 1% Fund, we build a preschool near the village of Ambohimena, Madagascar, for the children of families who pick organic ylang ylang flowers for our Well Earth partner.

1996We begin in-house gas chromatography testing.Adding GC testing to our rigorous in-house quality testing program allowed us to achieve the highest level of quality control and make a truly meaningful guarantee of quality and purity.

2007We establish the Well Earth® sustainable sourcing program to find and develop partnerships with socially responsible suppliers of high quality botanical products from around the world. Grants to Well Earth partners support grower training in organic production, operational improvements and social giving programs in grower communities.

2009We establish a perpetual full-tuition scholarship for an apprenticeship at the University of California Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, the premier sustainable and organic training program in the U.S.

2010We implement natural steam sterilization, becoming the first U.S. manufacturer to use the innovative, organic-certified new process that ensures food safety.

2009We introduce the first Fair Trade Certified™ spices in U.S., supporting marginalized spice producers for whom Fair Trade social premiums provide the opportunity of a better way of life.

2011We earn LEED Silver certification for the conversion of our Norway facility's existing warehouse space to offices, an organic café and a product development lab.

1998Frontier founds the National Center for the Preservation of Medicinal Herbs.We founded the NCPMH to preserve native populations of at-risk herbs and research methods of cultivating them to counter the effects of overharvesting. All results of the Center’s research were made available to the public for free. The Center was donated to the community group Rural Action in 2002.

2012We receive a Safe Quality Food (SQF) rating of "Excellent" in an audit of our North Liberty facility, the highest rating level awarded by SQF, a global food safety certifier.

Directions1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.2. Toss cauliflower and chickpeas with Vindaloo curry powder and melted ghee in a large bowl.3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange cauliflower and chick peas in a single

WHAT IS ARROWROOT?

Where Does True Arrowroot Come From?

Because the availability of true arrowroot is often limited, many suppliers adulterate arrowroot with starch fillers such as potato, sago, rice, tapioca and corn. Frontier’s on-site quality lab evaluates every shipment of arrowroot we receive to ensure that we offer only pure, genuine St. Vincent arrowroot. Because we don’t add fillers, our arrowroot may be more expensive than arrowroot available from other companies.

Arrowroot is a fine, white, powdered, unmodified food grade starch. It is often used as a thickener in sauces, gravies, puddings and fillings.

True arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea) only grows in the rich volcanic soils of the island of St. Vincent in the West Indies. The government of St. Vincent controls the declining production and supply of all true arrowroot.

Brewing The Perfect CupA great cup of tea starts with fresh, cool, oxygenated water. Measure the leaf—approximately one teaspoon per cup. Heat the water and pour it directly over the leaves. For green teas, heat it to the point where bubbles just begin to form. For oolong teas, heat the water until the bubbles start to release and it is beginning to boil. For black tea, allow the water to come to a gentle boil.

Then steep the tea, about one to two minutes for green, four to five minutes for oolong and black tea. Make sure the leaves have enough room to unfurl completely by not overpacking the infuser. Or simply steep the loose leaves and then pour the brewed tea through a strainer into a serving cup. Perfect tea is brewed one cup at a time.
