JDRF Forms Largest-EverInternational Effort to Research Genetics of DiabeticKidney Disease

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure.Approximately one-third of people with type 1 diabetesdevelop diabetic kidney disease, known as diabeticnephropathy—characterized by the slow deterioration of thekidneys and their function. In what is the largest analysis of thecomplication to date, JDRF today announced a more than$7 million, three-year initiative to explore the geneticcomponents of diabetic nephropathy, forming an internationaland collaborative undertaking that will build on previous

research and expand our understanding of the condition. The JDRF Genetics of Diabetic Nephropathy Collaborative

Research Initiative will provide funding for three years to fourmain institutions leading the project. “JDRF is proud to bespearheading this project, which is helping to fill a huge gap inresearch into diabetic nephropathy,” said Helen Nickerson,Ph.D., JDRF’s senior scientific program manager ofcomplications.

Severe cases of diabetic nephropathy can eventually result inkidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD).Although tight glycemic control can reduce the onset of renalcomplications, T1D can still lead to ESRD. Interestingly, somepatients who have lived with diabetes for a long time do notdevelop diabetic nephropathy, while others who have haddiabetes for a shorter length of time quickly progress to ESRD.

The three initial key activities of The JDRF Genetics ofDiabetic Nephropathy Collaborative Research Initiative projectinclude: looking for genes that differ between people with T1Dwho do or do not have diabetic nephropathy; identification ofgenes which predict how quickly a person with T1D maydevelop ESRD; and identification of genes which predict rapidprogression of decline in renal function.

“By supporting more extensive studies and creating aplatform for widespread collaboration, JDRF is striving tobetter identify ways to predict, prevent, and treat this devastatingcomplication of diabetes. We hope that this research will lead to new drug targets and biomarkers for diabetic nephropathy,”Dr. Nickerson said.

On February23, 2011, the livesof the LoncarFamily changedforever. Whatstarted as a quicktrip to the doctor’soffice for Hunter, with a suspectedinfection, turnedinto a 5-day stay atChildren’s Hospitaland a lifelong

struggle to maintain a normal life. The diagnosis of type 1diabetes was so unexpected. For a shy boy who doesn’t really liketo be in the spotlight, Hunter was now thrust into the focus ofmany doctors, nurses, social workers and educators. During thosefirst few days, Hunter had to quickly adjust to taking seven shotsa day — when initially getting one shot caused anxiety attacks.Thankfully, in time, the shots were replaced with a pump thatmade things a little more manageable.

While it has only been about 18 months since Hunter’s lifewas abruptly changed by his diagnosis, it hasn’t prevented himfrom doing the things that he loves or stopped him from beinga fundraising champion. Hunter’s mom, Michelle, created the

Hunter’s Heroes walk team just three short weeks before thisyear’s Walk to Cure Diabetes. They didn’t know what to expectand set a modest $500 goal for their team. Thanks to theamazing support of Hunter’s friends and classmates at WesternBeaver High School, in just two days Hunter’s team was able tosell 200 JDRF paper sneakers and 300 Hunter’s Heroes JDRFwristbands. Hunter’s Heroes quickly surpassed their goal andneeded to raise the bar. Michelle talked about how it felt tohave such an outpouring of support, “At open house, I arrivedat the school to see the cafeteria windows filled with JDRFpaper sneakers, Hunter’s Heroes posters on every wall and allthe kids wearing Hunter’s wristbands! The students, teachers, nurses and parents have rallied around us and have shown moresupport than we ever could have imagined.” In addition to theschool support, Hunter’s friends, family and sports programshave united to support JDRF. With only three weeks to raisemoney before walk day, Hunter’s Heroes raised over $3,200!

Today, Hunter Loncar is an 11-year-old sixth grader. Heloves to play football, baseball and basketball. He is a kind andcompassionate big brother to Beau and a loyal cousin. If youask Hunter what his greatest wish is, he replies “I’d ask for twowishes! First, I wish to find a cure for diabetes and then I wishto find a cure for Catie’s (his 2-year-old cousin who has AicardiSyndrome) seizures!”

SDP ProjectThe Special Diabetes Program (SDP) has led to

groundbreaking discoveries and new treatments that areimproving the lives of people with diabetes and demonstratinga strong return on the federal investment.

Last renewed as part of the Medicare and MedicaidExtenders Act of 2010, the SDP is funded currently at $150million per year through FY 2013 for each of its two parts: type1 diabetes research and diabetes treatment and prevention forNative Americans and Alaska Natives.

The renewal of the SDP must happen this year or else therewill be a drastic halt in critical diabetes research and derail thesignificant federal investment already made to NIH over thepast 16 years. We cannot afford to lose $150 million a yeardedicated to T1D research through the SDP.

Advocates began laying the groundwork for the SDPrenewal earlier this year with Promise to Remember Memeetings, Government Day, online calls-to-action, and mostrecently, JDRF’s Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.

Securing renewal of the SDP in this tough political andfiscal climate will be more challenging than ever before. Thismeans that we’ll need to have strong advocacy participationacross the country to generate the utmost support.

We Need Your Help!

November and December will be critical months for ouradvocates. When a ‘Call to Action’ is made, via email or phonecall, 100% participation is vital to the success of our program. Please do your part by responding to the call. JDRF and theresearch has come too far to turn back now!
