Dear Friends

During October we celebrate Harvest Festival. This is a church festival celebrated by most traditions in our country, though in its modern form it only really dates from the nineteenth century. Up and down the land people turn their minds to the subject of thanksgiving for the fruits of the earth. Every harvest we celebrate the goodness of God in providing for our needs in the form of the food we have to eat. It also gives us the opportunity to think of those through whom God works to actually grow and harvest our food. Whenever the Bible or Jesus talks about the harvest or about anything to do with food they nearly always refer to the people who do the donkey work, the sower in the field, the farmer who stores in barns, the men who sort out the wheat from the tares, the labourers in the vineyard. In our world, however, such people are often overlooked or forgotten, especially if they are far away. We are very happy to find the fruits of their labours on our plates, the bananas or rice or chocolate or coffee or tea, but we seldom give the people who are primarily responsible for getting them there a second thought. At harvest time, therefore, we are called to be thankful. Thankful to God, yes, certainly, but thankful also to those children of God who work so hard that we might be fed with all the delicious food we have the choice to buy in this country and in the other rich parts of the world. But thankfulness is empty unless we give it substance. I know many of us support fair trade and if you don’t perhaps you too might just consider doing so as well. But it isn’t just farmers abroad we need to think about we also need to think about our farmers who are desperately trying to make things work for them, particular with the uncertainty of Brexit. We need to give all farmers the chance to sell what they produce at a fair price in a fair way. Perhaps you might want to buy local produce which sees a fairer price for our farmers and it is better for the environment. Honest balances and scales are the Lord’s; all the weights in the bag are

his work. Proverbs 16:11

St Roberts Church, Pannal from 8.45am until 10.30am.

Harrogate District Foodbank Harrogate District Foodbank is looking for people to volunteer in

their warehouse. We see the largest quantities of food coming

in between October and January and while we have space to

store large volumes, it needs carefully sorting and stacking to

make the most of the space while not wasting any food. The

warehouse is open on Mondays (time can be flexible) and will

involve the following tasks:

Helping unload the van

Weighing in the donations

Date checking donations

Putting stock on the shelves

Helping sort and weigh food ready to go back to our

distribution centres.

You would be working as part of a small team and the role

does require a good level of fitness due to the weight of the

food.

Please email [email protected] with your

name and postal address and we will send you an application

form.

THE MOTHERS’ UNION

MU October Meeting

At the September meeting, we welcomed Mrs Jane Abramson who gave a very interesting, informative and amusing talk about women in the First World War. Large numbers of women, many leaving domestic service, were recruited to all the jobs traditionally done by the men who had gone to war, with the exception of driving trains. Their work was vital to the war effort and following the war it resulted in a social revolution. This month’s meeting is on Wednesday, 2nd October at 7.30 pm in the Chapter House. Mrs Joan Pearson, one of our Committees members, will give a talk entitled ‘St Paul’s Saxon Church, Jarrow’.
