relationships with the industries and employers specific

to those majors. Coordinators work by appointments

only, students can call 812-464-1865 to schedule a time

to meet with their designated career coordinator.

Career Services & Internships is located in the

Career Services and Internships has implemented a new enhanced database for tracking student internships. The database will allow the

department and the University to identify internships by major and college, as well as providing a look at the array of employers in business,

industry, government, healthcare, and the non-profit sector who support USI students by providing these opportunities.

The creation of the database is also another way the University is putting students to work developing real-world solutions. Career Services

and Internships partnered with senior students in the Romain College of Business Computer Information Systems (CIS) program to create

the enhanced database using data about internships that has been collected for years.

The office also is coordinating with Planning, Research and Assessment to provide access to the database using Tableau (the same system

used currently for the USI Viewbook) for faculty, staff, students and parents.

Phil Parker, Director of Career Services, said the office is seeking assistance to enhance

the University-wide system by encouraging students to notify the office when they ac-

cept an internship and provide information about the experience. Students can fill out a

simple form online. Departments that collect internship information are also asked to

consider passing that along to be included in the University internship database.

The First Destination Survey, created annually by Career Services and Internships with help from

Planning, Research and Assessment, is a valuable tool that helps to track graduate information

about first jobs following graduation, salary ranges, field of study vs. field of employment, and

enrollment in graduate or professional school, as well as other information.

The annual reports are available on the Career Services and Internships website.

By encouraging seniors and graduates to complete the First Destination Survey, individuals and

departments can help create a valuable report. Students receive emails prior to and following

graduation, with a link to the online survey.

Help Launch an Eagle Program A major part of our work is to form strong relationships with employers and to help connect them to students. One program we offer em-

ployers is Help Launch an Eagle, providing employers several ways to participate and connect with USI students. Some of activities include:

Information tables– Employers have a table in a high traffic area on campus in order to share information with students.

Information sessions - We reserve a classroom and students are invited to meet with the employers to learn about their organization or

current job openings.

Guest speaker list – Employers can sign up to be guest speaker for student organizations or share a topic they are qualified to speak about.

Faculty can request names of employers to speak in their classes.

Mock Interviewer – Employers work with our office to conduct mock interviews for students to help them gain confidence and experience.

Mock interview days can be scheduled for various departments and student groups.

Career Fairs – CareerLINK is the annual career fair for all majors, it is held in both the fall and spring semesters. The Health Professions

Career Expo is held every fall and Teacher Recruitment Fair in the spring. Employers can attend the fairs to recruit students for their current

jobs and internships.

Employer Advisor for the day – We invite employers to work in Career Services for a day. They can meet with students to discuss careers in

certain fields or industries.

Host a student to job shadow – Many students request this opportunity to explore new career options.

Networking Nights – Employers can host a networking night or dinner on campus to meet with students.

Site visits – Companies can host a tour for students to visit their business.

Employer Spotlight – An employer is featured in an article in Career Services & Internship’s student newsletter and various on campus

events of their choosing. (i.e. information tables, guest speakers, information sessions, etc.) employers appreciate this opportunity to in-

crease their recruiting efforts.

Resources for Students

Suits For Student Success

Below are some of the resources we offer for students. We continually seek new ways to assist students in their career development.

Eagle Career Launch

InterviewStream

Career Shift

Since January 2017, Career Services and Internships has been collecting interview appropriate attire to

distribute to students at no charge. Students who are in need of a business suit for an interview or ca-

reer fair can visit the closet once per school year. We stock business suits, conservative dress shirts,

blouses, slacks and dress shoes. All donations must be business interview attire, clean, in good condition

and fairly current. We accept donations during regular office hours; we can also make arrangements to

pick up items if necessary. Many faculty, staff and community business professionals have donated over

the past months, but there is an ongoing need of suits for students. Please share this information with

family, friends and colleagues who may have suits to donate. (Formerly Career Clothes Closet) We

opened to students prior to CareerLINK in spring 2016 and have provided suits to over fifty students.

Eagle Career Launch is our online job bank system specifically for USI students and graduates. National,

regional and local employers post part-time jobs, internships and co-ops, and full time positions. Stu-

dents can search and apply for these opportunities. On campus offices can also post their positions for

students workers in Eagle Career Launch. Any student who visits Career Services seeking a part-time

job on or off campus is directed to Eagle Career Launch. There is no charge for employers or students

to use Eagle Career Launch.

InterviewStream is an online program that allows students to practice interviewing in the privacy of

their home. Students can use premade interviews or create their own set of questions. Faculty can re-

quest access to InterviewStream to create assignments for their students. The system records video and

sound of their interview so users can see any verbal or visual improvements they may need to address.

Students have the option send the interview to Career Services for feedback. Any assignments created

for a class will automatically be sent to the instructor. Contact our office if you would like use this re-

source.

Career Shift allows graduates to find a job, research companies, explore the job market, and find con-

tacts. Job hunting has never been so easy. This resource is complimentary for one year. Graduates

simply use their USI student email address to register.

Career Readiness and Professional Development We are pleased to offer this Career Readiness and Professional Development class, GENS 401, that will help

students prepare for their career after graduation. The course content includes resume development, in-

terview preparation, internship and job searching strategy, effective communication in the workplace, the

importance of networking, using social media in your career, professionalism, first year on the job success

and applying to graduate school. This one credit hour class is offered in the spring and fall semesters.

How we communicate with students We all know getting information to students is challenging at times. We wanted to share with you our typical methods we use to pro-

mote programs and events. These methods include Constant Contact, USI’s email, flyers, table tents, posters, display cases and bulletin

boards, chalking sidewalks, yard signs, announcements in MyUSI, and Eagle Career Launch, announcements on flat panels around cam-

pus, ads in The Shield, promotions on USI Radio Station, articles in our newsletter and other department newsletters. We need your

help in promoting events and welcome any ideas you have to reach the students. We do track students who attend our events, so any-

time you want to offer extra credit or require participation, we can forward you a list of your students who attend most of our events.
