To Start the Lesson:
Tell the students that you are going to set up a mystery of your own! Tell thethat you have secretly placed a heart in 2 backpacks (one boy and one girl) andthey have to figure out who “took” them by matching a fingerprint that waslifted from the scene of the crime to one of their classmate’s.
Begin by introducing the vocabulary words. Teach them about the differentkinds of fingerprints using “The Fingerprint Files” sheet. Complete the practicesheet together (answers are: loop, plain arch, whorl, tented arch). If you’vepurchased mini notebooks, have them practice drawing the various fingerprints iit; if not, simply have them practice on a blank piece of paper.
Here’s a link to a site with a fingerprint matching game:
http://www.nist.gov/public_affairs/licweb/suspect.htm Next, have each student use their pencil to rub a solid square on a piece of scrappaper. Have them take their own thumbprint by rolling it onto the pencil markand then rolling it onto the piece of clear tape. Next, stick the tape to the boxon the “Fingerprint Lab” sheet and have them write their name on the line.Collect each child’s thumbprint.
When the students are not around, take out the prints belonging to the 2children whose backpack contains a heart. Make one copy of these “suspect”prints, cut out only the print, and then copy the boy’s print for each boy inclass and the girl’s print for each girl in class. If your copier has a photosetting, use it! Otherwise, lighten it a bit.
Give every child their fingerprint back and have them place it on their desk. Pa
out the “Who Stole My Heart?” sheet along with the suspect’s fingerprint. Havethem glue the mystery print inside of the box on this sheet.
Then, using their magnifying glass, they can move from desk to desk like forensidetectives as they try to figure out whose print it is.

Students can enter up to 5 suspects on their recording sheet. They will use theclues they listed to make their final prediction. End by taking out the manilaenvelope and reveal the guilty students! Finally, complete the reflection sheet ansend all items home in their detective file folder.
Facts about fingerprints:
*It is true…no two fingerprints are alike. Even identical twins have differentfingerprints.
*Fingerprints are impressions left behind from the ridges on our fingers. Theseridges act as traction and help us grab things.
*We don’t outgrow our fingerprints. They start to form about 12 weeks into oudevelopment and remain the same throughout our lives!
*A koala’s fingerprints are almost identical to humans!! However, koalas do nothave prints on their palms and they have 2 thumbs on each hand.
*Only severe injury will change your fingerprints. Cutting, burning, and scrapinthem will not destroy your prints. They will form again when the new skill growsback.
