How do we do it?The Aurora Symphony Orchestra is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization run with very little overhead. Almost all of the musicians and staff are unpaid volunteers who do this both because they love music and they love bringing music to the community.

Facilities costs have been cut by 75% over previous years by changing rehearsal and performance venues. Constant management of expenses in this economically trying time is crucial. Purchases of new music have been dramatically reduced, and the soloists featured by the orchestra are all local.

Is this enough?

The now-annual Wine Social (April 24 this year) has become a much-anticipated event and draws support from a wide array of the community, from City Council members to former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway. This years event will be at Dumitri’s on the Green at Heather Ridge Country Club.

A brand new fundraising event to look for this season is a murder-mystery dinner at Adams Mystery Playhouse on February 27 (12pm) called Murder in the Mezzanine. There is only limited seating available for this event so don’t wait to get your tickets.

Smaller, more frequent fundraising events prove to be a more economically viable approach to fundraising.

In past years the Symphony Ball was the ASO’s biggest fundraiser. Because of the loss of a major sponsor and the continually high expenses the symphony has taken a different approach.

ASO in the Community

The Aurora Symphony Orchestra is also proud to announce its newest collaboration: the Kol Bo School of Music. Partnered with Simchat Torah Beit Midrash, the music school will open in the Fall of 2010 for beginner students in both band and orchestra.

The ASO has many small ensembles (“chamber” groups) that frequently perform in the Aurora and surrounding communities. These groups include the brass quintet, string quartet, woodwind quintet, and flute/harp duo.

One of the Aurora Symphony’s commitments is to keep a visible presence in the community, and to support local events to whatever degree possible. Because ASO musicians are also a part of the community we find that many opportunities come from within the organization (like HOA summer picnics and holiday parties).
