• The Holy Spirit can heal the past so that the past will stop influencing our present.

• Paul tells us to throw off the "old man," (the person you used to be)

• “Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from Him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.” (Ephesians 4:20–24, NLT)

"Red button" issues

• Words or actions which trigger a strong emotional response.

• In the same way we suffer physical injuries to the body so we can suffer emotional and spiritual wounds.

• The wounds of the heart are just as real and even more painful than physical wounds.

• These wounds of the heart are touched by certain words, or actions, even smells or noises.

• One of the most common heart wounds is that of rejection.

• In this fallen world we have all experienced rejection. Severe wounds of rejection can undermine the whole course of our life.

• People can feel rejection in hundreds of different ways.

• One of the most common ways rejection happens in childhood is through what is called Conditional love.

• Conditional love creates a wound of rejection that can control adult behaviour.

There are two ways people respond to conditional love and acceptance.

• The first is “Beat the system” by achieving and complying so as to gain acceptance.

• The person feels that they are unlovable if they don’t achieve or succeed.

• Failure to achieve is associated in the mind with rejection.

10

10Tuesday, 4 August 2015

• A second way people react to conditional love is by rebellion.

• This way of manages the pain of rejection by fighting the system and closing themselves off from other people so they won't get hurt.

• This often results in further rejection and stronger acts of rebellion.

• “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols. And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.” (Ezekiel 36:25–26, NLT)

• To receive a new heart we must first receive forgiveness and cleansing from sins.

• We forgive those who we feel have rejected us and confess the bitterness we have stored up about those people.

• Jesus said,“If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Matthew 6:14–15, NLT)

How are the Wounds of the Heart Healed?

12

12Tuesday, 4 August 2015

• Forgiveness is a process.

• For wounds of the heart that are deep, the process of forgiving is like peeling away the layers of an onion.

• You begin with the outer layers, the immediate hurts and pain and gradually over time each layer of hurt and offence has to be dealt with until you get the centre and the wound is completely healed.

13

13Tuesday, 4 August 2015

• Forgiveness is not forgetting that something happened; because we can't forget.

• Forgiveness is a decision not a feeling.

• You may not feel like forgiving those who have hurt you but you can make a conscious decision to forgive.

• Forgiving is laying aside your right for justice or desire for revenge or repayment.

• The people who have caused you harm maybe unrepentant, and don't deserve to be forgiven.

• Jesus' parable of the unmerciful servant

• The King hands the unmerciful servant over to the torturers until he can pay the debt. In the time of Jesus a debtor could be thrown into prison and tortured until the family raised the money to pay the debt.

• In the context of Jesus teaching on forgiveness, it is a warning to us that if we do not forgive then we will will never be free of the pain and the hurt.

15Tuesday, 4 August 2015

1.Make a list of all those who have offended you, hurt you or rejected you.

2.Face the hurts. Acknowledge the pain these people have caused you.

3.Take hurt to Jesus. Confess to Jesus the pain, the anger, grief, and all the negative feelings you have in your heart.

4.One by one aloud to Jesus in prayer forgive each person for what they did or failed to do.

5.Ask the Lord to heal you and make you whole.
