  • 1. Product overview

1.1 Product Summary In the Victorian era, cast iron became

prevalent in the urban environment and

in recent years it is experiencing a

    resurgence. Pavement Lights are a

feature of the streets in many towns and

cities and many from the Victorian

heyday of cast iron are now nearing the

    end of their useable lives.

    Hargreaves Foundry has been developing

pavement lights suitable for use in

pedestrian areas. Pavement Lights are a

key architectural feature of a building,

new or old, allowing natural light into what could otherwise be a dark, uninviting cellar.

All Hargreaves Foundry Cast Iron Pavement Lights are tested and certified to the specified working load.

Unless otherwise requested, Hargreaves Foundry pavement lights are designed to support ordinary

pedestrian traffic and occasional, accidental vehicular traffic. As standard, Hargreaves Foundry pavement

lights will be supplied with a durable, bespoke paint system. (See section 3 Technical Painting).

1.2 Production Hargreaves Foundry Pavement Lights are produced at our traditional foundry in West Yorkshire and are hand-

finished by our team of experts. Hargreaves Foundry uses a traditional cupola furnace and skill sets that

have been developed and improved upon for many years.

All of our staff have been expertly trained, and this wealth of experience shows in the quality of the final

products. All patterns for castings are hand made by skilled craftsmen whose attention to detail produces

the high level of accuracy required for quality castings.

    1.3 Benefits The benefits of cast iron over other materials used for pavement lights include;

    • Cast iron is strong and durable, ideal for use in busy pedestrian locations

    • Cast iron is a non-combustible material, and although the coating may produce limited smoke, the

cast iron will not contribute to a fire.

    • Cast iron has proven longevity, some of the pavement lights we replace have been in service for over

    150 years.

    • Cast Iron is highly resistant to wear and will not produce dust when damaged.

    • Cast iron looks good!

1.3 Sustainability Cast Iron is a re-useable material which can be recycled numerous times without loss of its original

properties. The majority of the raw materials used to cast Hargreaves Foundry Pavement Lights are 100%

recycled from known sources to ensure the final product is made from the correct material grade.

Hargreaves Foundry are committed to taking a sustainable approach to production and aim to reduce the

environmental impact of our industry. A copy of our Group environmental policy is available on our website.

  • 2. Quality & Conformity Our processes are designed to ensure that our customers can be confident in both the quality and

consistency of our products. Pavement lights are inspected throughout all stages of production from pattern

making through moulding, finishing and painting.

We manufacture in grey iron to BS EN-GJL-250, and confirm this by testing & verifying routine material

samples at an independent laboratory. Each pavement Light casting is marked with a unique reference

number which can be used to trace the product back to its date of production

2.1 Loading It is important that Hargreaves Foundry are able to give our customers the confidence that the products we

supply are fit for purpose. To that end, every pavement light made is supplied with a certificate to confirm

the load to which it has been tested and rated.

2.1.1 Testing Hargreaves Foundry have invested in load testing

apparatus which allows all pavement light castings

to be tested up to their design load before

despatch to ensure they are fit for purpose. The

loads are usually applied on a 300 x 300mm test

platen placed in the centre of the pavement light

casting to ensure the test takes place where the

loading would have the greatest impact.

This process forms a major part of our

commitment to our customers to provide assurance

of the correct product to meet their requirements

2.1.2 Requirements Since there are no British, European or

International Standard which applies directly to

pavement Lights, Hargreaves Foundry has developed its own internal specification. This specification is

based on the maximum permissible single axle loadings for UK roads as laid down in BS EN 1991-2:2003

(Actions on Structures – Part 2: Traffic Load on Bridges) and a Statutory Safety Notice published by the

London Fire Brigade in June 2004.

Unless by special arrangement with a customer, all Hargreaves pavement lights are tested to withstand a

load of 100 KN tested on a 300 x 300mm test platen*. This gives an equivalent tyre loading of 1111 kN/m2.

The two benchmark values which are relevant to this testing are:

    1. London Fire Brigade and Westminster Council specify that pavement lights should withstand a 75kN

Load which is equivalent to a tyre load of 833.3 kN/m2. Based on this requirement, our testing shows

a 33% safety margin over the specified requirement.

    2. BS EN 1991-2:2003 however specifies the equivalent tyre loads for different vehicle classes. The

highest rated special vehicle class is SV196 which has an equivalent tyre load of 681.6 kN/m2. Based

on this requirement, our testing provides a 63% safety margin over the anticipated single tyre load.

Should your particular project have a loading requirement in excess of that stated above then please contact

us on 01422 399111 to discuss your requirements.

*For clear openings below 300mm a smaller platen size will be used

  • 3. Technical painting Specification Hargreaves Foundry Pavement Lights are supplied with a 2-pack primer over the shot blasted substrate,

followed by a 2-pack epoxy top coat finish. Pavement Lights are supplied as standard in a BLACK MATT

    finish.

Note: A wide range of colours are available, including most British Standards, RAL and special colours to

    customer requirements.

    3.1 Technical Data

2 Pack Epoxy Zinc Phosphate HB Primer A two-pack polyamide cured epoxy resin system containing anticorrosive and other carefully selected

    pigments and extenders.

This minimises corrosion of the casting and is the minimum that we would recommend to protect the casting during transportation. The primer coating will be a minimum of 50 microns thick on all areas of the casting.

2 Pack Epoxy Solvent Based Finish A two-pack polyamide cured epoxy resin system

    containing carefully selected pigments. It

    provides outstanding adhesion, toughness and

durability and has a long life when exposed to

aggressive environments, with good resistance to

    chemicals and polluted atmospheres (providing

the coating is fully cured before exposure). A

minimum dry film thickness of 50 microns is

    applied to our castings

Single pack “touch up paint” Hargreaves Foundry Recommend that when ordering your pavement light(s), a tin of touch-up paint is also

ordered. This is used for rectifying small areas of the coating that may have been damaged during

    installation.

It is also anticipated that the paint coating will become worn due to regular footfall during service and it is

likely that rusting of the casting surface will not become apparent. If however areas of rust begin to form

during service, these should be removed with a wire brush and re-coated accordingly.

  • 4. Lenses and Blocks The pavement light frames are made primarily of recesses designed to take either glass lenses or ventilation

blocks. These can be selected by the customer at the time of ordering. All blocks are secured into the frame

with mastic and grout to prevent movement and leakage (see section 7 Installation Guidance).

4.1 Standard Glass Lens The block that is used most often is a standard glass lens. This

allows light to permeate straight down into a basement level

room. These simple glass blocks are very similar to those

traditionally used for this purpose and as the pavement light

frames have been designed to fit them, they guarantee a

    good fit.

These are available in 2 standard sizes. Approximate overall

    Dimensions (L x W x D) for these are:

    Size 1: 100mm x 75mm x 20mm

    Size 2: 100mm x 100mm x 20mm

If you require a different size please contact us as bespoke options are available.

4.2 Cast Iron Air Vent In some situations it may become necessary to provide

ventilation to below ground areas in addition to allowing natural

light to enter. In these cases a vent block can be used as an

option for some recesses within the pavement light casting in

    place of the glass blocks.

If these vents are required, it should be noted that some form of

catchment must be provided below them to collect any

rainwater, debris or other detritus which may fall through the

vent holes. This should be designed by the consultant/contractor

to suit the particular requirements of each project. Each vent block consists of six openings, each

surrounded by a raised lip to reduce the ingress of water and to form part of the raised anti-slip features.

    Approximate overall dimensions for the air vent block are 100mm x 75mm x 20mm (L x W x D). Other sizes

can be manufactured, please contact us for more details.

    5. Thermal properties With the advent of super insulated housing and stricter building regulations relating to the thermal

properties of buildings, it is important to understand the behaviour of each and every component involved in

a build. Thermal efficiency of a product or project is indicated by its U-value. This gives an insulation of the

thermally resistive properties of the material. When Insulation is a factor, a low value is regarded more

    positively than a higher value.

Cast Iron as a material does not form a thermally efficient product and has a typical U-Value in the range

6.4-6.9 w/m2K. If thermal efficiency is of particular importance for a project, it is suggested that a

secondary glazing unit be obtained and installed beneath the pavement light unit. This will preserve the

external, traditional appearance while increasing the thermal resistance of the area of the building. It is

however important to ensure that access to the underside of the pavement light unit is still possible to

permit ongoing cleaning and maintenance to take place.

  • 6. Basement Illumination It is generally accepted that the presence of natural light within a room, enhances the appearance of the

space while also improving the mood and wellbeing of those using it. Due to its inherent structural

properties, Cast Iron permits a much greater level of natural illuminance than Pavement Lights made from

some other materials. As shown in the table below, Hargreaves Foundry cast iron pavement lights have a

much higher percentage of visible glass than on comparable concrete versions.

Visible glass on upper surface Visible glass on lower surface

    Typical concrete pavement lights

    40-45% 22-26%

Table showing percentages of visible glass to total area of pavement light unit.

*percentage variance depends upon glass block used

The load bearing abilities of cast iron provides the opportunity to reduce pavement light section depth. This

means that a greater proportion of light approaching the pavement light at an oblique angle can pass

unhindered by the frame and be distributed throughout the space below the pavement light unit.

Testing undertaken by our Technical team have shown that natural illumination below our pavement light

units is variable depending on external light conditions. The table below outlines a comparison between

Hargreaves Foundry Illuminance readings taken 750mm below our pavement lights with values taken from

the UK Health & Safety Executive document HSG38 (Lighting at work).

  • 7. Installation Guidance If you do not intend to install the

pavement light yourself we can offer an

    installation service through approved

installers, please contact us for details.

    When installing Hargreaves Cast Iron

Pavement Lights, it is important to ensure

that the opportunity for water to pool on

the surface is minimised. Pavement Light

units should therefore be installed where

possible with a slight fall to ensure water

runoff. In addition to this, the pavement

lights should not protrude from the surface

of the surrounding pavement to prevent it

    forming a trip hazard.

It is possible to install pavement lights on

any substrate provided it is stable,

structurally sound and able to support the

weight. To secure the Pavement Light unit

in place, a waterproof mortar bed needs to

be placed below the supporting areas of the casting. It is important to use some temporary supports in order

to prevent the mortar from sagging under the weight of the casting before it has had time to set.

All edges of the casting should then be sealed in place with either a hot or cold applied sealant such as

Bitumen, Mastic or suitable synthetic sealant. It is important that the unit should be tested for water

tightness at the end of installation to ensure the sealing process has been a success.

Due to the density of cast iron, Hargreaves Pavement Lights tend to be large, heavy and unwieldy and

present unique challenges during installation. Hargreaves Foundry would therefore recommend that

installation is undertaken by a specialist contractor who possess mechanical lifting equipment and have

experience in working with products such as these.

  • 8. Bespoke products At Hargreaves Foundry we utilise our expert knowledge

and skills to create bespoke products that will meet

    precisely a customer's requirements.

Pavement light units can be cast in any shape and

quantity which gives us the flexibility to create a

bespoke design (subject to specific loading

requirements) to fit the required space. We can

produce replicas of original designs if the project

needs this. Hargreaves Foundry are proud to offer a

design service to replicate any sample cast iron

pavement light unit and are proud to have taken part

in many restoration projects to date.

The advantage of this flexibility is that exceptions

would not have to be sought for new pavement light

designs as part of a listed building renovation nor

would any major compromise of an architect’s vision

    have to be made.

Please contact our sales department on 01422 399111 for more information on how we can help with

    your project’s design requirements

  • 9. Stallboard Lights Stallboard lights are traditionally used in

conjunction with pavement lights where the level of

the basement comes above the level of the ground

outside the building. They provide a simple way to

allow more light into the basement area without

affecting the traditional appearance of a structure.

In a typical installation, a stallboard light would be

placed immediately adjacent to a pavement light to

give the appearance of a single, continuous unit.

Hargreaves Foundry Stallboard lights are cast in the same grade of Iron

as used for the Hargreaves Foundry Pavement Lights although the design

has been modified to reduce weight in the units. Hargreaves Stallboard

Lights can be manufactured using any of the standard glass blocks and

are also finished with the same Matt Black Epoxy coating as the

    Hargreaves Pavement Lights.

It is traditional with many Stallboard lights that they come with an

opening section to allow ventilation. The mechanism used by Hargreaves

Foundry for this purpose allows the window to be easily opened and

closed as needed without the need for cumbersome ladders or poles.
