Designed to protect workers and public from chemicals in the workplace

Known as the Right-to-Know law because it is all about access to information by workers

Three main elements of WHMIS:

Employee Training

Labels and Symbols

Material Safety Data Sheets

Products that are considered to be WHMIS controlled will already have WHMIS Supplier labels on them

WHMIS Supplier labels are placed on the products by the suppliers before they come to the workplace

If a label is missing you should report it to your supervisor

WHMIS Workplace Labels: Sometimes we have to place labels on WHMIS products ourselves in the workplace – such as:

When decanting a product from a container with a WHMIS Supplier label into another container

When opening a multi-container where only the outer container has a WHMIS supplier label

When bulk shipments are received and off-loaded directly into containers
