5INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the 2012 Whitstable Satellite. As ever the Satellite Programme is packed full of a range of practices showcasing the depth of artistic talent brewing in East Kent and beyond. Over 50 artist projects are taking place throughout Whitstable over two weeks. Some projects are quiet and subtle, taking place at dawn on The Street at Tankerton Beach, or are to be chanced upon in shop windows or on lampposts. Other projects welcome wider engagement and invite you to participate in aural flash mobs, sing along to shanties or be led on a journey of local folklore.

The defining aspect of the Satellite is that its diversity and range of practices make it impossible to categorise. The programme features artists of all ages and practices including filmmakers, photographers, writers, musicians and painters. The one thing that does link all of these projects is that they are all built into the fabric of Whitstable. Finding space to exhibit work can be a challenge, meaning that many of the projects are incorporated into the architecture and landscape of the town. Artists occupying the empty waiting room at the train station, films projected onto the side of the Neptune pub, prints and postcards found in Harbour Street shop windows, videos displayed in St Peter’s Church and a concert performed in someone’s living room are just some of the many projects that will be dotted throughout the town.

This is the Whitstable Biennale’s sixth edition, and the Satellite has grown more exciting and diverse with each year. The Satellite has been an occasion for artists from Whitstable as well as throughout Kent and beyond to come together to show their work, meet other artists and take advantage of the open platform to take risks and experiment within their own practice. In a bid to carry on the momentum of the Satellite throughout the year, we have established the Satellite Artists’ Membership Scheme. The scheme provides artists with various opportunities to develop their practices through trips, talks, networking events, professional development workshops and exhibiting opportunities throughout the year. We have already this year visited Spike Island and the Arnolfini in Bristol, and look forward to hosting curators from the ICA and Turner Contemporary during the Satellite for curatorial visits.

This year’s programme looks to be as vibrant and diverse as ever, and we hope that you enjoy exploring Whitstable through the spectrum of the Satellite.

‘She Writes presents…’ short plays by women on the theme of art.

Currently only 17% of plays produced in the UK are written by women. If all the plays we see are told from one point of view, we only see one side of the story. 17Percent is an organisation which aims to show the other side of the story by supporting and promoting UK-based female playwrights.

She Writes is 17Percent’s showcase night of short plays by women, a place where women writer’s voices can be heard. Since the night was founded in 2011, we have showcased the work of over 30 writers.

BANNER REPEATER is a reading room dedicated to artists’ publications, and a project space, sited in a working station environment on platform 1 at Hackney Downs train station, London. Whitstable is notable in having the world’s first steam-hauled passenger and freight railway service.

Whitstable Sew-on-Patch

To coincide with the 2012 Biennale, Barnes has produced an embroidered sew-on-patch.

Featuring the Biennale Pavilion, a temporary structure by artist Kieren Reed, framed by the picturesque Whitstable seafront, the sew-on-patch is ideal for affixing to bags, jackets, shirts or rucksacks.

Available to buy in the Pavilion shop for the sixteen days of the Biennale, it’s also for sale in shops throughout the town for two years.

Part of an ongoing series by the artist, each sew-on-patch is produced to coincide with a major temporary art event.

The Great Beauty of Truth

Donald Crowhurst participated in a round the world yacht race in 1968. He was critically unprepared and had no realistic hope of completing it. He decided instead to try to falsely compete by intentionally losing radio contact and recording where he should have been, rather than where he actually was. This took its toll, and under great stress and within the vastness of the sea he began to lose his mind.

Statements from Crowhurst’s logbooks, his final messages to the world before disappearing into the sea, will be integrated into pieces of work that will be left throughout Whitstable.

‘Chinese whispers’

Based on the game of Chinese Whispers, this project explores the gradual transformation, disintegration, and reconstruction, of language through iterative repetition. During this journey of transformation words are passed through different understandings. New parts are added, others lost, and new possible interpretations are created.

For Whitstable Satellite 2012, participants are invited to enter the Chinese Whispers Booth where they will listen to a phrase before then being asked to repeat what they have heard into the microphone. Each participant creates the next iteration, and the chain repeats.

Circle Compositions for two artists and two musicians

A constructed situation of live composition and performance, wherethe authorial dominance of composition is rendered, in equal parts,to the artists and performers. Circle Compositions for two artistsand two musicians is the first version of an ongoing investigativecollaboration between artist Jammie Nicholas and composer LouisD’Heudieres, in which, through a research based on the conceptof multiple authoritative voices in the creation of an artwork, thereis an attempt to re-address base authorial dominance. For thismanifestation, a series of hand drawn circles, augmented throughdigital projection are performed by two musicians in the moment of composition, to blur the origin of authorial output.

Dolores de Sade’s work is about the representation of place. Focused mainly on the landscape, and exploring the materiality and memory of such, her work is as much about what is not included in such depictions – the absent figure, the ever-shifting horizon, the impossible search for a wilderness.

Dolores de Sade is a British artist who trained at Royal College of Art. She has exhibited across the UK and internationally. She was recently awarded the Royal Academy British Institution Award and the Birgit Skiold book award. Her work is held in many collections including V&A Museum and Government Art Collection.

Moby Clit and the She Shanties

A musical ensemble of curmudgeonly old teats and tousled troubadours and tousled troubadours, Moby Clit and the She Shanties will entertain with traditional songs of wonder and woe from the high seas and low ebbs. The Groynes, silent sea poets

Our early memories are often sand and sea, sounds of wave and water while the groynes marching from shore to sea, are silent witness to all our stories. Here, their tongueless mouths gagged by metal bands, they share their mute thoughts with us in the poetry of the groynes inviting you to respond.

Annette Fry works with time and space (using sculpture, installation, video and sound) to create a different perspective in a changing world. Together she and Robin Berry (actor and film maker)will create a video of the groynes’ performance.

51zeroº Voyager is a dynamic moving image and digital media arts festival, with interventions and exhibitions at various locations around Kent. Outdoor spaces for open-air experiences as well as alternative non-traditional arts venues support a programme of activities and events.

The festival presents non-mainstream independent cinema, digital art, experimental artists’ films, video and sound content from all over the world including live-art events and installations. It responds to Kent geographical landscape, heritage, social and cultural undercurrents and the wealth of diversity in the area, and offers platforms for artistic talent.

The 2012 edition travels to Chatham, Whitstable, Maidstone and Rochester.

Exhibition of Drawings celebrating unusual edible plants.

To coincide with the exhibition JoJo’s delicious seasonal dishes will also include some unusual edibles.

Recently I have returned to drawing as the main focus for my art practice. I enjoy its immediacy, its tactile and sensual qualities and the links with other artists past and present.

I am familiar with these plants (weeds) through my horticultural work, coordinating the Market Garden and Herb Workshops at The Blackthorn Trust. I continue to be inspired by these amazing plants through my ethno botanical research, with a special interest in their nutritional and medicinal qualities. The work has also been informed by the historical and contemporary traditions of botanical illustration.

Babble Station

Preschoolers with parents or guardians are invited to take part in this radio art project which will be collecting pre speech communicative sounds and utterances which will be recorded and played back at a series of participatory workshops held at the Horsebridge Centre via solar radios. Babble station is part of a series of eight radio art works from Magz Hall that consider future uses of FM when it has been abandoned by sanctioned broadcasters. You Find It In People

“You find it in people” brings together new works from artists Lizzy Rose and Katie Hare. The works explore identity and class via a shared ‘suburban english’ experience and culture. Lizzy Rose will be showing a selection of work from her online archive project Prefab Archive documenting Exaclibur Estate in Catford, one of the last post-war prefabricated housing estates left in Britain, due for demolition at the end of 2012. The project aims to document the estate, its residents and their campaign to save their homes. Katie Hare will present the video piece Shall we sing a song for you? Comprised from field recordings of football chants and footage of one of Britain’s few all-female metal bands, Hare seeks to capture the electricity of being part of the crowd alongside the thrill and element of danger that comes with sacrificing oneself before that same mob.

PSYCHO-PEBBLE 2

At high-tide, I shall be working with the sea, a psychiatrist, the public, a million or more pebbles and as many Sharpie pens as I can afford. The object is to seek enlightenment from the gods or nymphs of the abyss by casting musings, wishes, dilemmas and conundrums, written on pebbles, into the sea. The process is similar to the objects thrown into the Sacred Spring in the Roman Baths in Bath where curses, with messages inscribed on sheets of lead or pewter, were then rolled up and thrown into the waters where the spirit of the goddess Sulis Minerva dwelt.

Risk Twirl Room

The notion of unfamiliar visualities is a key aspect for both of our works. Irena Kalodera’s videos explore proprioception and the haptic, while early perspectival systems and their relation to an idea of ‘natural vision’ are central to Henrietta Simson’s practice.

‘Risk Twirl Room’ combines a sense of the landscape with the haptic quality of the idea of a body. The installation sets up two videos, one shot underwater, the other in a bell tower in Florence. The films’ juxtaposition creates an evolving relationship between materiality and light; rhythms and sounds bounce off and interweave from the contrasting land and sound scapes.

Drawing the Line

Drawing the Line is a celebration of Whitstable’s most iconic landmark - the cement Sea Wall.

Over the course of one day Natalie will walk the full line of the Sea Wall and make observational drawings of the people and activity that she spies along the way. Drawings will be photographed and immediately uploaded to a dedicated twitter feed @ofthewall2012, where users can view a complete gallery and click images to pinpoint the locations of their making.

Dark Matter: Cities - London

In the ‘Dark Matter’ sculptures the properties of bitumen are exploited to explore work that, like nature, changes over time and moves from form to formlessness. The black structures and their descent into disorder evoke ideas of time, entropy, chaos and loss. The proportion of different grades of bitumen used determines the rate at which each sculpture moves. Depending on temperature, sculptures will move to ground over hours, days or weeks.

Eventually, all ‘Dark Matter’ sculptures will exist only as pools of pitch containing themselves and other things entrapped with them.

Seaside Scribbles

Angela will spend the day weaving amongst both locals and vistors alike, sketching constantly to try and capture the essence of seaside life. Kent Cultural Baton

The Kent Cultural Baton by Nicole Mollett, is a travelling artwork which asks people to share local stories and giving them the chance to learn about their area’s past. The aim is to present the curious tales as a collection of maps, displaying a snapshot of Kent’s fascinating history as part of the cultural celebrations for the London 2012Games. The “Atlas of Kent” will serve as an archive, as a publication and web based interactive resource that will create a cultural legacy available for future generations to explore and discover.

The Baton will be presenting the works of; Bridgette Ashton, Duncan Ward, Trisha Scott and Clare Smith in a series of one-day interventions in the space.

Sea Shanties: a Residency and Exhibition

Printmaker Alice Pattullo will be artist in residence at the Print Block by the East Quay, and will be displaying the work there and in the window space of Frank in Harbour Street. For this project, Alice will be producing prints that are inspired by the traditions of the sea shanty. Lobster Pot garden is a playful response to the maintained nature of the beaches and beachfront gardens along the whitstable seafront. During the course of the biennale plant “seeds” from the Lobster pot, made from knitted wires and twine, will propagate along the sea wall and the groynes these will be photographed and uploaded onto my website, www.elspethpenfold.com. Greetings from DEAL: IN WHITSTABLE

Inspired by a 1925 map-postcard charting the proximity of Whitstable and Deal along the Kent coast, Greetings from DEAL: IN WHITSTABLE is a postcard event psycho-geographically linking these two seaside towns. The production of twelve limited edition postcards will summon a site-specific form of surprise, re-collection and wisdom. Each postcard of Deal will be situated to mirror Whitstable’s comparable urban morphology, creating an ephemeral and fun sense of being in two places at the same time. As a limited edition of 50 (until stocks last), the postcards will be for sale at Oxford Street Books with a walking navigation card around the town centre and sea front.

Knit One, Purl One‘What we see is not what is….what we see is not exactly what we get….’ (2009)

This film questions how identity and stereotypes are portrayed revealing that some issues are timeless. The film tells the story of three female models photographed in knitting patterns dating from the 1950’s. Along with their tales, we hear debates in visual culture that link back to the time when the images were taken. The narrative weaves film techniques used in the 1950’s with the related internal monologue created by ‘extreme close up’ and ‘close up’. These are employed to emphasis ‘moving image’ when using still images. This perhaps makes it harder to be confident of what we are seeing and considers ‘reality’ in another time and space.

Breakfast Fetishism

Breakfast Fetishism is an interactive performance born from discussions between Estelle Rosenfeld and Ghazoan Ali on the concept of commodity fetishism. With this project, they want to take up the challenge to make the sharing of philosophical ideas thought provoking and entertaining, humorously taking participants at the discovery of what is in their English breakfast, using low-fi devices such as human Ipads.

Suitable for all, audience members can choose to take part and/or watch, come and go during the performance and choose to watch for a few minutes or the whole hour.

The Little Blue Beach Hut

Susan Shaw will be making a connection between the residency in The Little Blue Beach Hut and visitors coming to Whitstable. Inside the hut there will be a collaborative site specific art installation making links between Pilgrimage, Gathering Souvenirs, Tourism and Whitstable.

The Little Blue Beach Hut, Tankerton Slopes, Whitstable, Canterbury City Council Arts Residency will be open to the public for the weekends of Whitstable Biennale. Make a pilgrimage and place a blue object during the first three weekends of September 2012.

The Voyagers

The Voyagers reflects the artist’s interest in the symbolism of boats as vehicles of transition and their connection to mortuary rituals. The title alludes to Now, Voyager, the ship on which Bette Davis completes her transformation from an awkward spinster, abused by her mother to a confident woman in love. The project is a response to the 20th anniversary of the discovery of Dover’s 3,500-year-old Bronze Age Boat.

Clare is creating a fleet of flat-bottomed folded-paper boats to form part of an installation in Dover Museum.

Please bring a photo of a loved one you have lost, for scanning and printing and make a flat-bottomed, open paper boat, together with the artist. The boat will then be photographed.

North Philadelphia

Jeffrey Stockbridge, has created a series of eerily evocative photographs of abandoned dilapidated houses, taken between 2005 - 2008. This series documents the effects of the economic crash on this once vibrant and thriving North Philadelphia community where he occasionally squatted.

As a student he occupied a number of squats only too aware of the sad ironic act of repossessing these homes. His work as a photographer was informed by the haunting memories of the forsaken remnants found in these vacant living spaces. Vagrancy, drug abuse and prostitution, have blighted these former homes and businesses.

A Drop in the Ocean

My work involves mutating plants and sea creatures into fictitious life forms. This installation is inspired by the deep, dark waters of the sea and what may lie beneath.

Three large vessels contain a myriad of mythical, marine life forms that appear authentic yet are fabricated from natural rubber using moulds made from discarded materials, such as razors and old shoes. Each vessel contains a variety of ‘mutations’ in vibrant and subtle colours and a host of shapes and sizes- as if a scoop had been taken from the ocean bed -real or not?
