Whiter Teeth May Boost Likelihood of Higher Income
Surveys and researches have confirmed the assumption that good looks and tall stature are all
factors in employment and promotion. Of all physical assets, a person’s teeth can also influence the
direction of their career and how much they make.
Straighter, whiter teeth are an asset. A disparity exists between people with less than stellar
dental health and those who possess straight and pearly white teeth – a gap in favour of the former.
The following are some of the
studies that prove this assumption:
Teeth as an Asset in Careers
In a working paper entitled “The
Economic Value of Teeth”, authors
Sherry Glied and Matthew Neidell sought
to find the relationship between labour-
market income and a person’s teeth.
They found that people, especially
women, who lived in cities with
fluoridated water earned 4 percent
higher than their peers in areas where
the water was not fluoridated. The
effect, however, is noticeable only in
women who were from families of low
socioeconomic status.

Better Start with Brighter Smile
In another study called “The Impact of Whiter Teeth on Key First impressions”, the researchers
conducted interviews, simulated job interviews and quantitative online surveys. The study showed
that 53 percent of the participants who whitened their teeth were more likely to receive higher
salary offers than those who did not.
In the simulated interviews, participants with whiter teeth were perceived as more confident
and professional. The quantitative online survey revealed other positive attributes such as
trustworthiness, professional success, and financial success.
White teeth spell success in the corporate world. Arguably, this may mean that a person
possesses the time and resources to invest in dental aesthetics.

Whether a person is seen as more attractive and presentable when facing clients, it seems that
the job market caters more favourably to those who look after their teeth. This explains why
whitening services continue to be worth so much across the globe.
