A Note from the Principal:
We have ended the second academic quarter with much excitement! Our building has been
buzzing with student celebrations, music concerts, student sports events, the MAPS reading
assessment, the Spelling Bee and the School Makes a Difference adult guest speaker program
for our 8th grade students. Our quarterly student incentive, the Thunder and Lightening Dance
was a huge success with an impressive 93% of our student body qualifying to attend.
As second quarter grades are completed I hope that you will take the time to celebrate your
child’s successes and give them the time and encouragement that they may need to soar to the
next level.
February will hopefully roll in like a lamb as we get ready for the Science and Book Fair, our
second quarter student celebration assemblies, 8th grade High School course enrollment and
many exciting fieldtrips. Please mark your calendars for no school for students on Friday
February 21st (staff professional development day).
Peace and stay warm!
Deborah Ptak

Join us on April 29th for Whitehorse PTO Night at Culver’s! It’s the perfect excuse to skip a night of cooking and support Whitehorse
Middle School at the Cottage Grove Road Culver’s from 5:00-8:00pm on
April 29th. Mention Whitehorse and 10 percent of the proceeds from your
meal will go to the school. Whether you save room for rich frozen custard
or not, it’s still a sweet deal. Spread the word and we hope you can all
help us support Whitehorse!

Calling for old electronics
Hello Whitehorse Families,
Eighth grade has a unit on electricity and electronics—one of our projects is to dissect old
electronics to study the different parts inside. If you have an old radio, VCR, DVD player or
alarm clock; please consider donating it to our class. You can send your child to school with
the item and deliver it to Ms. Cullen in classroom #212.
For safety reasons, we CANNOT take televisions or computer monitors.
THANKS!!!

No Name Calling Week begins March 3rd
March 3rd
is the kick off for our No Name Calling Week campaign sponsored by the Whitehorse Gay-Straight
Alliance (GSA). The members of the GSA work diligently to create a safe, respectful and honoring community
for all students. During the week of March 3rd
students will have the opportunity to participate in events during
lunch and recess. A No Name Calling Pledge Rally and Poetry Slam are just two of the events that will be
taking place that week. Our campaign to address bullying and harassment will continue with the Day of Silence
on April 11, 2014.
The Day of Silence is a student-led national event that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and
harassment in schools. Students from middle school to college take a vow of silence in an effort to encourage
schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior by illustrating the silencing effect of
bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT. If you would like more
information about the Day of Silence please visit the GLSEN website at GLSEN @ dayofsilence.org.
All Whitehorse students and staff will have the opportunity to participate by wearing a ribbon of silence, or a
ribbon support. Alternative modes of communication will be used by those students who vow a day silence so
that they can fully participate in the academic schedule.
If you would like more information about any of these events please contact Tracy Warnecke, PBS coach at
204-4492 or [email protected]

WHITEHORSE SPRING RUNNING CLUB
WE WANT TO STAY #1
Whitehorse Running Club was the top participating school in last season’s Tri4Schools
events. The events included a month of May Kid’s Triathlon and Mud Run as well as a Summer
and Fall Kid’s Triathlon and Mud Run. Tri4Schools awarded us with a trophy, which travels to each season’s
top participating school. WE WANT TO KEEP THE TROPHY AT WHITEHORSE!!! We also received a
huge donation from the non-profit Tri4Schools organization which returns a portion of all the individual’s
registration fees back to their school.
Our Spring Running Club will begin this year on Monday, March 31st and continue through to the May Kid’s
Triathlon and Mud Run. (We will publish a schedule to all participants once we get it finalized). We will have
4 swimming practices at Lafollette H.S. (Triathlon participants only). Our other practices will focus on fitness
training and running. This should help us get all the students ready for whichever event they want to do, OR
BOTH EVENTS. Our swimming practices will be after school. We will take a bus from Whitehorse to
Lafollette H.S. and return. We will be back in time for the students to take a scheduled bus home. Our other
practices will be after school as well and will be done in time to take a scheduled bus home.
Registration is already available. The Kid’s Triathlon (Saturday, May 3) is currently $25 and will go up to $30
after March 31. The Mud Run (Saturday, May 17th
) is currently $20 and will go up to $25. Whitehorse will
receive back a portion of each student’s registration. When you register, just input Whitehorse as your child’s
school.
WE WANT TO BE BACK-TO-BACK PARTICIPANT CHAMPONS!

5% BACK TO SCHOOLS You are probably done buying school supplies, but remember Whitehorse all year round when shopping at
Office Depot. Office Depot will donate 5% of qualifying purchases to Whitehorse for free supplies. When you
shop at Office Depot, simply tell the cashier that you would like your purchase to support Whitehorse Middle
School. Out-of-town supporters will need to give our School ID Number 70109384.
