CATHOLIC EDUCATION SA
103 schools…..46,000…..Students….6,500 Staff
Where Every Child Matters
Next week we celebrate Catholic Education SA Week.
Educating 46,000 students means that our Catholic schools make a
significant contribution in providing quality education and nurturing the
growth of young people who are and will continue to contribute to our
South Australian community and beyond for years to come.
To celebrate Catholic Education Week at Whitefriars we will:
- Showcase our children’s sporting talents in our annual Sports Day
- Invite families to reach out to those in need in our community: Give to
Vinnies Winter Appeal by donating blankets, shoes, clothes, bed linen
and items of food (see page 2)
- Care for our Environment: be Sustainable by ‘switching off’ for a
day (Monday 9–11am, Thursday 11:30am–1:00pm, Friday 1:30—3pm)
- Open our Doors to enable visitors such as our neighbours,
parishioners, prospective families, and other interested people to come
and view what happens inside our classrooms.
Our children are all looking forward to Sports Day next Tuesday. We
hope that many of you may be able to come and watch for some or all of
the day, at Santos Stadium. The programme for the day has been sent
home.
Happy Mothers’ Day to all of our mums, grandmothers and others
who ‘mother’ us in different ways. We especially remember those
mothers and other significant women in our lives who have died.
All Mums and Grandmothers (and
others in our community) are invited
to afternoon tea on Friday to
celebrate Mothers’ Day at 2:30pm outside the library.
(Side gate will be opened.)
The following is a delightful prayer that Year 5/6N shared at Community
Prayer on Tuesday:
“See the hand of God...in all that happens.”
(St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, 1871)

Prayer for Mums
God our loving Creator, we pray:
for new mothers, coming to terms with new responsibilities,
for expectant mothers, wondering and waiting,
for those who are tired, stressed or depressed,
for those who struggle to balance the tasks of work and family,
for those who are unable to feed their children due to poverty,
for those whose children have physical, mental or emotional disabilities, for those who raise children on their own, for those who have lost a child,
for those who care for the children of others, for those whose children have left home,
and for those whose desire to be a mother has not been fulfilled.
Bless all mothers, loving God, that their love may be deep and tender,
and that they may lead their children to know and do what is good,
living not for themselves, but for God and for others.
We thank you for the love of the mothers you have given us,
whose love is so precious that it can never be measured,
whose patience seems to have no end. Amen.
Whitefriars Arts Fest

Visual Arts and children are creating some fine pieces of work which will be on display on Friday 30th June from 7pm.
Mark the date on your calendar and watch this space for further details!
Yours sincerely
Mary Hemmings

Ecological Conversion Called to hope; spurred by action
This term our whole school focus is on Sustainability. Our Earth is a precious gift from God and we are called to be caretakers;
to nurture, look after and protect this resources so that our future generations can wonder at the beauty and awe of God’s creation. Each unit is looking at
a different aspect of sustainability and throughout the term they will be called to action; called to make changes in order to preserve our environment.
Pope Francis states in his encyclical ‘Laudato Si’: “Everything is related, and we human beings are united as brothers and sisters on a wonderful pilgrimage,
woven together by the love God has for each of his creatures and which also unites us in fond affection with brother sun, sister moon, brother river and mother earth.”
Inspired by the example of Pope Francis, grant us the humility to remember that we are but one part of a vast ecosystem,
an integral ecology, all of which is precious in your eyes. Enriched as we are by faith, nourished as we are through the Eucharist, grant us the strength we need to be steadfast advocates for the voiceless,
mindful of the intrinsic importance of every living thing on Earth.
A HUGE thank you to Annie Mc Cleave (3/4F) and Kate Sanders (3/4BF) for their Christian leadership and their dedication to supporting
Caritas. During the holidays the girls led a mission activity and raised $33.60 for Project
Compassion. Well done girls!
A very special thank you is also extended to our whole school community who generously contributed to
Project Compassion. Approximately $2500 has been donated.

the people the Society visits.

Our class has also been learning about the
Australian Government.
We had a lot of questions and organised these into
categories. We learnt that there are three levels of
Government: the Federal Government, the State
Government and the Local Government. We
researched what roles and duties each level of government is responsible for.
In Art, we used primary colours to create secondary
colours. We did a range of Art activities including
our colour wheels (we created a picture from these
wheels) and our oil pastel echo effect Art. We all got
creative with our Art and our final products were
quite impressive!
